it's a good way to start to study theory. instead of (as a beginner) picking up the italian or vienna or scotch where you're kinda stepping into a deep pool of theory, there are a handful of immediate trap lines that you can learn, there are one or two longer lines to learn, and it opens into a pretty fundamentally solid position. if you master these traps and a couple variations, you'll be ready to learn something with a little more depth. then you can pick up the scotch gambit or vienna gambit or fried liver, and start to learn more traps and more robust theory.

I typically play a Bishop's opening with an immediate follow up of Qh5, prepping the Scholar's Mate. What I do next obviously depends on what my opponent does, but I pretty much always press the attack on f7 with my bishop and queen and other pieces as long as possible. That often puts me in the position shown at 4:50, but I don't think I've ever really thought about Ne2 here. I'm usually trying to activate some of my pieces on the other side of the board.

Hey Levy, I started playing chess expecting to be bored of it in a week during the early days of the queens gambit release. Now I've been playing this game regularly for the past 2 years. What really get me into the game was watching a lot of chess content (you, hikaru, botez sisters, the champions chess tour) and developing a surprising passion for playing the game. Your early tutorials and opening videos was pivotal for this change. Though I sucked at winning using what I learnt from your videos, I loved trying things. I would never have continued with chess if o hadn't seen those videos and learn new openings. I think the new boom is amazing and I would love to see more of such videos that would help these new players grow. Trust me the only reason that kept me going 2 years ago was the fact that I started to gain elo and play competitively (fyi I went from 300 to 1600 on rating in rapid). Please bring out more these (GTE and champions chess tour recaps as well) and cement this growing community. Thank you Levy!

I remember 1 game in a chess class. It was back when I was a kid, the other player essentially opened 1 side of their board(queen side I believe), meanwhile I raced either my queen or my Rook behind their line, as they left their king trapped without defense. It was check with only 1 piece and like 15 moves. Nether of us were particularly good, but I am damn proud of managing to see that position.

I've had good results with that, but perhaps you need to know what you're doing in order to get decent compensation, as opponents who play 2.Qh5 have often said to me that usually when they face 2...Nf6 they end up with an extra pawn for not a lot.

I've played hundreds of blitz games online at this point and it still urks me as a new player when someone pulls the queen out early, because it's sort of like running a 5k race against someone you consider your equal, and they start the race at a sprint. It's confusing, and you're suddenly not sure whether they're faster than you, or they're going to crash and burn. It can demolish your psychology around the situation.

more like teaching wayward queen attack as an opening bc he includes variations where you can't just play scholar's mate

@@OWEN_SHEPHERD Don't worry this opening is also dumb and only works on absolute beginners (I'm talking people around 100-200 elo)

I think it would be interesting to have two intermediates play against each other. One of which you have taught those principles prior. You could use that to analyze the mistakes made and where the potential lied. Would be interesting to see I think.

When Hikaru Nakamura used it all those years ago, Hans Ree called 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5 a "provocative but quite sensible move". I've seen Magnus Carlsen on both sides of this variation in blitz. The main reason why it's not so bad is Black has to make concessions to stop the Scholar's mate (...g6 and ...Bg7 boxed in by the e5-pawn isn't ideal).

with 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5 I thought you were about the teach the "mate of the felt" on a physical board: you tell your opponent: "my king has not felt, does your king have none too?" and after your opponent verifies touching the king, you kindly remind him that he should move the piece he touched. Then the game ends with 2. ... Ke7 3.Qxe5#

Levy spoiling an entire generation of beginners. ;) Maybe you can follow up with a video on how to defend against the wayward queen one day? At some point I found the surprise weapon 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5 Nc6 3.Bc4 g6 4.Qf3 f5 - which looks really suspicious for black, but after the natural-looking 5.exf5 moves like Nd4 and d5 become remarkably effective. Also, against this type of play it's just good to have a surprise weapon of your own.

Only bring your Queen out early like that if you are below 1000 rated, above that you'll be at a disadvantage because they can develop their pieces while attacking your Queen essentially getting a free move.
