I have found destroyers to be very enjoyable over the last few days, and especially in ranked. The massively decreased amount of rng compared to battleships means your decisions matter far more, so I thought I would talk about the decision-making process throughout a game.

Another BB main switching to DDs in Ranked :D the DD is so strong when it survives into lategame, and sole BB at 100% has 0 chance against DD at any low HP. you will hit that torps eventually

grozo has been powercrept a lot, daring essentially fills the same role but better. then again, grozo has a few advantages over daring, mainly speed and shell velocity, vs daring winning massively in DPM and flexibility (agility and the short smokes) essentially you want to play it just as you would any other hybrid. fight dds you can outgun (torpedoboats like shima or somers, anything german, US and RN dds at range), avoid things like kleber, harugumo, close up fights against daring/halland/smaland (at medium range you can win these fights with good gunnery). you can open water gunboat in a grozo but i would not recommend building for it, other dds are better at this role (kleber, khaba) use your torps against pushing battleships and smokescreens, if you land torps and force a damage con, you can go for fires (grozo has a good fire chance for a dd) the AP is certainly also a strength, it has really good pen for a dd (not quite kleber levels but very solid), use it at broadside targets up to around 10km (on bbs and heavily armored cruisers you have to aim for weaker parts like nose/stern and upper belt, main belt will shatter your AP)

​@@Freeeez3 The Grozovoi isn't at all a hybrid since its torpedoes just aren't good and its DPM isn't good enough to effectively outgun other DDs at close range. It is an open-water gunboat that uses its god-tier ballistics to compete with superior close-range gunboats. I don't even build CE on mine so I can maintain a .7~km buffer between me and other DDs so I know when to start turning away when I get spotted. You don't have the DPM to fight blow for blow with any of the other gun-focused hybrids like the Daring and Gearing but you will beat them at longer ranges (7-9km) simply by landing more shells than them. You also are very good at farming capital ships with a full gunboat build since you can reliably land accurate shots out to your max range (14.8 with AFT) whereas other gunboat DDs would only be able to reliably hit mobile targets out to about 11-12km. Add in your crazy speed (not quite Khaba/Kleber level but still great) and strong survivability via a high HP pool and heals on top of having a smoke-screen and you get a very solid gunboat.

@@iiiiii_2212 the torps arent great but usable, and since the ship has both usable torps and guns that makes it by definition a hybrid. a gearing you can just dumpster in a knife fight because gearing dpm isnt that much superior and you have a heal and better HP pool. dont knife fight daring tho. its a bad idea. i've tried the whole no CE gunboat thing and found it highly ineffective at dealing with anything really. it makes you pretty much useless against any kind of decent dd player, regardless of ship, and most cruisers will still be able to reliably hit you even at max range. in theory it could be great to just fight the enemy dd on your terms at 7-9km. in practice any good dd player is not even going to shoot you, they'll just press f3 and start shadowing you, forcing you to just bail without getting anything done and give up map control in the process.

@@Freeeez3 Okay, if the DD doesn't come fight me then I'm going to HE spam his teammates so hard that they don't push up, effectively forcing the DD to come and fight me unless they want me to just free-farm 100k+ damage on his support which in turn will cost THEM map control. Sure this might not work in a competitive mode, but the average DD player in randoms isn't exactly the greatest, so this general playstyle has gotten me an almost 80% winrate in the Grozovoi. Also, the Grozovoi has a base DPM of 154k compared to the 216k of the Gearing. For comparison, the Shimakaze has about 134k. So yeah, raw DPM definitely isn't something you can count on. And if you want to play the Grozovoi as a hybrid, you might as well just go play the Daring since that ship is infinitely superior in that role due to its even nuttier firechance and marginally better torpedoes.

@@iiiiii_2212 right, dont get me wrong, im not saying the build can't work and i've tried it myself as well. my main issue is that it is ineffective against good players, and when facing good players is when your build actually does matter the most because you need every advantage you can get when skill is somewhat equal. good cruiser players will focus you and something like a zao, venezia or stalingrad can absolutely nuke you from 15km if the player can aim well or even ambush you from stealth. grozo just isnt agile and/or fast enough to reliably evade fast shells and its a huge target. the dpm and fires/minute are not exactly great either so you'll struggle to turn around a losing battle, and if forced back to 14km you lose all ability to scout and are not fulfilling one of your most important duties as a dd. lets just end this discussion because i'm pretty sure we both know what we are talking about here. one of grozos main strength is its versatility - it can be played both as a long range gunboat or as a frontline dd with fairly decent concealment and good staying power thanks to the heal, smoke and decent AA. however, as a jack of all trades its a master of none - for any specific role (long range gunboat, cap contesting dd/knife fighter, scout/torpedoboat) there are other, more specialized dds which are better suited for that role. but they all have even greater weaknesses in other areas.

Had tons of fun with my Alaska at bronze. But as soon i reached the silver quali phase and the T10 meta kicked in it became nothing but an agonizing experience... Both matches i tried were with FDR as enemie CV and all BBs camp in the back, doing their incredible "skillfull" deadeye sniping. There is no fun in this cancer meta so i decided to leave it there and go back to grind some lines at mid tier. WG really needs to fix deadeye. In the meantime they should stop enforcing T10 on us in all competitive modes. It just sucks.

It would be much better with single tier MM 7-9. The only reason we have 8-9 and 9-10 MM in ranked is the Fun Police. God forbid they couldn't ruin every game they are in.

The super-unicum 07 Harugumo build is fun. I regrinded the line just to get the legendary mod. A minute of smoke laying, two minutes disipation time, and a 3km buffer zone between my max gun range and enemy soviet radar, more for American.

I only play DDs, typically Pan Euros (Oland and Ostergotland favs) but lately I've been having a ball with my grinded to Lightning, 5.5 detect: Holy Cow I out detect everybody (even Japanese DDs): It's so "not" a Pan Euro playstyle whereas I prefer distance and open waters: I had to Learn a new smoky island hugging playstyle and struggled with it big time and for quite awhile too. I do miss my AA and taking the fight ""to the aircraft"" though (CVs think that they are attacking me but I contend the druthers In my Pan Euros lol but, Lightning is super fun (despite it's crappy AA) and now learned I can't stop playing it! So important to highlight how to win games instead of how to farm damage. Can emphasize this enough. Too many people just want big numbers and lose games in the process, complaining about their teammates.

Now try a scenario; where u are t8 dd in a t9 ranked match (opposing also t9 dds), where there's a cv and your team takes the worst effort to throw the game. Try that scenario 2-3 times in a row and then try to be all calm and collected.

The first problem is: Dont play T8 DDs in a T8-9 ranked MM. And if you do, dont cry if you lose. You handicap yourself and the team.

I played I think 3 matches in Ranked in my good old standby the Alaska and struggled to find good positions and affect the game. I switched to the Jutland and wrecked my way through Ranked about as fast as I ever have, ending the 1st sprint with something like a 75% WR. TBH it was the most fun I've had in Ranked for a looooong time. The amount of carry I was able to pull off really made it a good time. Hopefully the experience hold up when Silver and Gold become available.

When I'm in a DD, I become public enemy number 1 and all turrets turn, all aircraft seem to be diverted. It's almost as if your enemy players are following a script. It's uncanny the way they act compared to what I run into. Not saying your games are easy, I think it's more to do with your play removing options for them. It's just so strange to watch this and remember the pounding I took last night when radar flipped on while I was sneaking up on a cluster of larger ships. They all just happened to be trained on me, they all just happen to pull crazy Ivans right when I launch torps, just nuts.

It's possible, but unlikely. The only way would be everyone in my clan being ok with the video being released talking about strategy. Usually this is something the people coming up with the strategy don't want leaked.

I have been playing Z46 as a full gun boat, 32 mm pen, and 3.3 reload, and once gunthers skill pops in I usually have a 2.5 sec reload midway in matches, I get 3 spots and I get a heal :) then of course I have 4 smokes and hydros :P

Mogador is fun. You can set up the ship to be an ambusher which is how i got it atm. Fearless brawler is great on the mogador

Kita needs to get close to fight effectively. Thunderer could just stay at what, 22 km. CVs have unlimited range.

@@theheavytonk928 Thunderer requires someone to spot for it. Without spotting, it doesn't matter what the range of a thunderer is, you cannot hit anything. Plus with it's lack of dispersion if you guess how some cruiser is going to move incorrectly, then you have completely missed at range (28km just for the record). The secondaries of a Thunderer are pisspoor. You would think that if a destroyer could carry as much firepower as a kita, then a battleship's secondaries could as well. The ones complaining in chat the most are the kita/shima players like one I came across while playing a thunderer. He got close enough to me to set off my secondaries then ducked around the other side of the island (if he had just charged, he would have definitely killed me). I did 3 things, switched to HE and started moving away, and got my tureets facing where I thought he would reappear. The carrier in the match noticed that he was spotted and went to look for him, found him and hit him with rockets. he, of course charged around the island and dumped his torps at me, while I sunk him with HE. All of his torps missed. My god that guy couldn't stop explaining how carriers are OP, and how bad a Thunderer player I am (Guilty as charged) - also how he should have killed me, if only the Thunderer wasn't so OP'd. Surprisingly, my karma decreased by 1 from that battle. However, as you are alluding to, each of these ships have different attributes. Unlike with the Brittish BBs, which require spotting, a kita or shima can effectively carry a battle without much support (as this video attests to). If you want to die quickly in the Thunderer, try brawling. Now, with dead eye, every BB becomes a Thunderer, even a GK.

For standard battles, geting penetrations is probably better, in ranked, people are more likely to have used their damage con, so its like 50/50

5% base fire chance is garbage, so IFHE is the bomb when beating on BB. The diff between 2.5% and 5% is negligable. I run it on my kita and it works well. Im not too keen on the range mod though, its great to be able to disengage and not get blasted by cruisers, plus the shell velocity at those ranges is easy to dodge. Not worth the range mod IMO.

I agree - no CV and low count of DDs. I usually meet matches with 2-4 DDs per side and while you can be good and do your job with spotting etc., when rest of your DDs die/run, there is not much to do afterwards except star saving. The first match made me stunned, like wtf is he doing leaving C cap. Being enemies more competent (at least half his level), the riga would followed their BB soon and he would be there alone against Oster and Georgia. It also helped much that his fellow teammates survived and obliterated the enemy team on AB. Being it the opposite way (which happens and you have no control about it), winning back points after excessive time of C belonging to reds would be pretty hard and for all here reading I generally do not recommend sailing this way away, especially when you have no torps ready. Playing in a Yugumo with reload booster (no smoke) I need to position more carefully, but it is definitely worth it most of the times

Press the F3 key on your keyboard while you are looking at the target you wanna call out or the cap you wanna call out
