You don't need to blindly test CRU luminance values. The formula for Max luminance is 50 * 2^(value / 32), so for a peak brightness of 1000 nits the value would be 138.302. Though I'm not sure if CRU expects whole integers for these values.

Just love your videos man. I ordered some pc parts now so I can upgrade my pc, get Windows 11 and start tinkering with hdr settings. Among the things I ordered was a I7 12700F cpu. I'm not going all in with the newest things, that saved me 400 $ compared to the I7 13700K.

The Color profile works, but: - It crashes the Black Levels on too many games, despite neutral settings on the TV. - The Q70R manages about 700-750 nits and has record contrast values for a Qled TV about 7800:1. With the profile no highlights are crashed, but they also do not pop and are barely visible. >>> Hence my test: * Console Mode (Not PC, Reason= to dark, -100 Max Peak Brightness, no matter what settings. You become 600 Max Peak and all other Highlights between 600 to 800 Nits are Crashed. You can Counter the Crashing with Contrast at 44, but its more darker and you have -150 Highlight Brightness on PC Mode). Use Console Mod. * TV settings: Brightness to -5 (=Max Negative) Contrast =Max, Sharpness=1, Color=21, Contrast Enhancer=Low (Important for Oled lilke Pop, believe me, I have many reference HDR images to test. From my point of view, this is the better alternative for the Samsung. Samsung has no Option for HGIG, and Trim the Max Peak Brightness to 800 Nits is to Flat on it. To fix the black crushing use a near black test pattern and use the Samsung 20 points calibration. Increase Red Green Blue from the lowest IRE to 30% in a > way. Example 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately only 2-point calibration is possible in game mode. And outside the game mode, i have no motion pro and a latency of about 75ms! Game mode with motion has 21ms with game motion plus on 60Hz Max with HDMI 2.0! (Samsungs game mode highlight!) I have all Option testet before i came to my new settings. The most perfect settings i ever have seen on this TV. As I said, none of this would have been possible without your information. Even if the profile is not a good solution for Samsung, it helps to understand and compare how black levels and highlights should look and work. Thanks! BTW, I have many test patterns from your google drive downloaded months before. 👍 And i use hdr pictures from refernence hdr movies out ther, to see black or highlight and even color crashing. Such a color profile with Max CLL 1500 Nits and Black Level 0.05 would be a dream. Then you would only need to set the brightness to 0 and would probably have less effort and would be even a tad better. At the moment the Black Level difference compared to the profile would be about -2, i.e. brightness -7 (unfortunately only possible up to -5). But it remains after long comparisons the better choice in the totality of contrast, highlights, pop and black levels. Alternative would still be: Brightness -2 HDMI Black Level - low, then you would be at about -7 (same result as in the Color Profile). Then you would have to slightly increase the Black Level in the HDR app and set the Max CLL to 1250 nits. That also works. Perfect HDR & SDR Black Level. But the highlights are then not quite perfect, since they do not bleed through the lowering. But the information of the area around the highlights is omitted (only with HDR) and not transmitted. The graphics card sends them Full, but the TV cannot receive them with Low. With SDR there is no problem, because it doesn't need maximum bandwidth inside the HDR container anyway, as you know. @@plasmatvforgaming9648In some games it works, in others it doesn't (many I play as a sim racer and open world fan, like Wildlands etc.) and unfortunately it remains only a workaround, since a lot of tinkering is necessary. In addition to my settings suggestions but at least a possibility for bad black level raise games. What we should also not forget. HDR means highlights in bright and in dark areas. The human eye sees better the differences in the lower area. Since a lot of people like to cheat to see opponents better in the dark, some developers probably think, hey, let's focus on the cheaters and let it really HDR pop on the botttom. What they forget. Most of TV and monitor manufacturers have black level enhancers for this community. But the opposite... And, its allways only a compromise. We have only about 70-90% of PCI3 and 40-50% 2020 Colors aviable. It can at this time never near perfect. The question is only: is it a good compromise or a bad one. Let us help make best one way ones for all without headache ;-) To say it with your forgotten words: I love my tv now with my new settings (through your help!) and accept the imperfection on a few games at the lower end. SDR is like Oled and HDR only a bit off on the bottom, and only at a bunch of suckers. You can also use that CRU app to turn off ALLM. I did this long ago on my C1 because it would get in the way of casual use as a pc monitor. For ex., game mode would turn on every time I opened a photo with an image viewer.

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 I compensate by using 120hz and my mouse can raise it's dpi. Indistinguishable from game mode as far as I can tell. Although I have to switch back to 60hz when watching videos because motion settings don't work at 120hz. I could not stand every time I opened a video or photo that my tv flashes back and forth.

So my AW3423DW has HDR 400 and HDR 1000, I use HDR 400 for most bright games because at 1000 ABL kicks in, I only use HDR 1000 for dark games. Anyway, I downloaded the custom preset sRGB to gamma2.2 but in CRU it doesn't change because I have windows insider, I tried all other profiles to try to get 400 nits but all of them showing 800 nits. While the custom profile shows 240 nits. In your opinion should I just use any of the 800 nits profiles or should I use 240 nits/custom profile? I would assume its safe to use the 800 nits if I am using HDR 1000 mode, but if HDR 400 I should use 240 instead since 800 would just wash everything out

That's a known issue with the insider program. I would always use the 1000 nits profile. The 800 profile should work well. ABL is also present on the HDR 400 as these QDOLEDs can't do 400 nits full screen.

Worth noting the peak brightness doesn't only matter in AutoHDR. Certain games like Jedi Survivor use the Windows calibration to set peak brightness also.

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 the in-game brightness slider doesn't seem to increase peak nits over the windows calibration in Jedi Survivor it just adjusts the PQ curve, brightening the midtones and messing the image. I've spent the last 2 days fixing that game as after 7 patches it's still fundamentally broken on PC. Had to install mods to even out stutters and play at 1440p dlss performance just to get 60fps on my 3070 (yet somehow EA expect to port it to the PS4 lol). Then I've had to use Prod80's Contrastcorrect Reshade shader to dynamically fix the black levels (check out that shader if you haven't it adjust black levels on a scene by scene basis perfect for this game). And then finally having to exploit a glitch in windows sound management just to get surround sound working on my old Dolby Digital Reciever as the game only supports Atmos, even though every other game can output DDlive5.1 or 5.1PCM no problem it's literally a core feature of UE4. Gotta love PC gaming lol.

The formula to calculate the CRU value in EXCEL is "=32*LOG(PEAK BRIGHTNESS/50,2)", example: for 2000 nits it would be "=32*LOG(2000/50,2)"which would output a rounded value of "170".

Totally random, but do you think Blu-rays displayed at 1080p will look good on lets say a 77" S90C? Or will it look soft and upscaled? I plan on getting the retrotink4K since it uses dual strobe BFI to get motion persistence down to 6.94ms on a 144hz OLED like the S90C @24 & 30fps movies/TV series, but unfortunately RT4K doesn't do it at 4K, instead it's limited to 1080p. Kind of a bummer, because now i'm thinking it's most likely a better idea to fall back to 65". Can't imagine 1080p looking too hot 12" larger on a 77", not only because of the size increase but also the upscaling that's involved. For gaming however, a PC(+ RTX4090) driving nearly everything I can 144fps + 1440p - 4K would be fantastic. You could always just max sharpness and mess with super resolution settings if games can't hit native 4K at 77"

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 I always assumed that 1080p would not look as good being upscaled to 4K compared to a native 1080p display. Yet i've heard some people say that 1080p actually upscales perfectly into 4K. Regardless, at 77", you would still need 4K for the clearest picture possible, otherwise for 1080p you'd have to sit farther back. I was told that a future Retrotink4K model that does dual strobe BFI for 24/30fps content 'at' 4K would cost twice as much as the current model being released by the end of this year. :P it might not come to fruition for another 5 years apparently. Plus, Switch 2 might be coming out next year, and it should at least support 1440p, which makes going 77" even more alluring.

For my LG CX I use the 100 nits profile in Windows. So if I understand correctly, I can also use it for auto HDR games with hgig because it is designed for 800 nits, right? no matter where the SDR HDR slider is located. is that right ? Then I just need to change the profile for native HDR games or the cactus mod and can I leave it like that forever? and if I e.g. If I want to use bfi high, I take the unspcecified profile, set it to 1000 nits, turn DTM on and set max cll to 1000???

Hey plasma. I figured I'd try asking again since I think I asked this incorrectly the last time: Can you explain why in all of your lillium videos, you tell us to use HDR10? Is there any reason why you don't use scRGB? Have you compared both of them? I am asking because that starfield HDR mod lets you choose HDR10 or SCRGB and I'm not sure which one to use. I assume if I use scrgb then i'll have to enter CSP_SCRGB into the lillium inverse tone mapping, shader, but I was just wondering why you always go with HDR10 in your videos. Thank you!

Test scRGB on Cyberpunk, and you'll see the colors clamp to Rec709. For Starfield, some say the scRGB mod has less color banding. Auto HDR is scRGB. I'll recommend scRGB on Special K soon. There's nothing wrong with it, and if it looks good, I'd use it

Good evening. Im using the HLG on PS5 and im liking it. The only issue is some colours change from the SDR experience the yellow became more to orange a little bit. The red is too red sometimes. I tried to reduce the colour depth but it kills the overall picture. I tried the colour clipping test and all my colours are clipping.. i really like the HLG and i see sometimes it’s even better that the native HDR. Can you share your sittings on HLG or give us any tips on how to make bett colors?

Does it read the bt.909, dci-p3, and bt.2020 correctly when in auto HDR? I ask because in a plague tale reqium native HDR was showing 99% bt.709 but with auto hdr is was showing 88% and dci-p3 was showing 12%, so im wondering if that means autohdr is better/more colorful their or if the analsis tool is wrong when it comes to autoHDR not only for peak brightness but for colors too@@plasmatvforgaming9648

Have you had any issues getting a game to trigger AutoHDR? I've recently had issues getting AutoHDR to work in Batman Arkham Knight with the gamma 2.2 ICC profile selected. The game would still look like SDR even with AutoHDR enabled and the intensity slider made no difference. I could only get it to work after selecting the default ICC profile from the HDR calibration app and reloading the game.

Changing the brightness the content is trying to output won't change the brightness of the display. You'd have to use Tone mapping OFF Mastering Peak Maxcll 1000 if you do what you described and HGIG is better

Can you not do the same with the "DisplayHDR Test" app from the Windows App store? In the test (most are just static images for measuring), there is a part where you can calibrate the peak brightness and near black values for your Monitor. When you make an output file with DXDiag, I mean you can then find these settings under Display Device: Display Luminance: Min Luminance = 0.024900, Max Luminance = 600.000000, MaxFullFrameLuminance = 600.000000

I wonder if you can work out the nits that you want. So if you have 1000 nits divided by 8 =125. You input 125 and roughly, with 100 nits that will be the number you need. Something like that.

It doesn't matter the actual peak brightness of the monitor, you have to test what's the clipping point, it might be 1000

This applies to all games. There is a tool that can enable AutoHDR in all dx11+ games. And for the older games, you can enable AutoHDR in every dx9 game if you have nvidia GPU and you flip a switch in nvidia control panel and use DXVK configured to use HDR.

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 Sure. 1) Use this tool on every directx11+ and vulkan game to force autohdr: github.com/ledoge/autohdr_force -> and proceed to 2c) if the game uses vulkan 2) If the game is older and supports only directx9, use DXVK: github.com/doitsujin/dxvk (perfectly safe for all games, this is a part of what steamdeck uses to run games on linux) 2a) You have to create dxvk.conf file with this content to enable HDR while you use dxvk: "dxgi.enableHDR = True" (without the " " symbols.) The file should contain only one row. 2c) Set a setting in Nvidia Control Panel -> Manage 3d settings -> scroll all the way down -> "Vulkan/OpenGL present method" => Prefer layered on DXGI swapchain" 2d) This driver setting will reset itself every time you upgrade you nvidia driver 3) This will also allow you to use reshade cactus fix on older games to tweak hdr even more.

It's the force autohdr tool by ledoge. I tested this profile with the tool and it's truly a gamechanger. The value for 783 Nits is 127 in cru. I didn't use the 800 one because it's going beyond 800 in games. Looks amazing in Street fighter 6 which doesn't have native or auto hdr by default.@@plasmatvforgaming9648

So I have an original version Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor which has been great, but sucks at HDR. DxDiag lists Min Luminance=0.030000 Max Luminance=1000 Max Full Frame Luminance=400 and Windows 11 Advanced Display lists 340 Nits. Been trying to get a grasp on the correct numbers to enter into the CRU HDR Static Metadata EBlock to achieve the right Peak Brightness without much luck. Am I missing something obvious?

The actual peak brightness of the display is irrelevant for HDR settings, all that matters is the clipping point. Open some HDR Test patterns to test where it clips (logo dissappears). Open the HDR Calibration app and see where's the clipping point and go to display settings after the HDR calibration app creates the profile to see the brightness in nits instead of the weird HDR Calibration app scale (which doesn't match nits). That's the number you want to use. Just double check with multiple test patterns in case that the monitor is changing the tone mapping curve depending on the Metadata

The biggest thing you've done for me is convince me to get an lg c2 42" that will be here soon and i can't wait! @@plasmatvforgaming9648 Yep, I was using your exact reshade setup prior to using this ICC profile, in my opinion the profile does a better job overall. Tbh its a win as Reshade does not seem to play well with the 2.0 update of cyberpunk anyway (causes crashes and hangs sometimes). Also found that I had to set the HDR brightness to 620/630 nits in game menu to prevent the game from exceeding 800 nits when exiting the menu according to the HDR analysis tool. I dont know if this is due to my C9 display or the 2.0 update as I never tried your reshade method with v1.63 of the game, so cannot confirm. This is a random question but I have never seen the BT.2020 % change from zero in any games in the analysis tool, any ideas?

Does this affect games with native HDR at all or is it only auto HDR? Even watching your SDR video in Windows HDR mode there's a difference between toggling the new profile and normal. This seems to be the case watching HDR movies on mpv too, and I am not sure what's happening. Edit: The github for the profiles say this: "The caveat with this solution is that all content takes on the same transformation, including native HDR10 implementations, which don't need it; such content will see slightly darker shadows, potentially crushing shadow detail. You can either disable the color profile when viewing native HDR content, or just live with the slight boost in contrast for the sake of convenience." I'm guessing we should disable this profile whenever we are not using autoHDR? Like if we're using that other majorpainthecactus reshade addon method

This might perfectly fix some Native HDR games that have raised blacks, but that's not the intention. For Native HDR games and especially movies, just default back to the HDR calibration app profile

I tried forcing hdr on RDR2 after changing to Vulcan and the game wouldn’t start. Just black screen. Reverting hdr didn’t work so I’m trying to uninstall and reinstall the game.

Edit: It was Vulcan causing the problem and I finally got it fixed. RDR2 runs with autohdr_force now and I set peak brightness to 1000 in the game setting even though my screen is 800 nits. It looks good.

i'm using the unspecified profile, ultragear 27GR95QE-B, cru shows me different values on the three boxes for max luminance-max frame avg-min luminance . Do i need to set the first two with equal values and the third to zero? Now i'm on 115, 51, 10 and peak brightness is at 603 nits (i think it's the right value for this monitor and not the 1000 advertised). Thanks for anyone that could help. :)

I notice a bug after doing this on my 4080. Inside Afterburner my GPU and MEM Mhz are always at the max and the temp on card is going >60 C. Usually it's around 30 to 40C in idle. That's happening while the computer is idle and everything closed. If I reinstal lthe Nvidia driver this goes away and back to normal. Kind of strange that if I do reset-all.exe or put back the default value it's not working, it's still going at max frequency... Also like mentionned before when I did the CRU hack I have to go inside Nvidia Control Panel and set a custom resolutoin since I'm locked at 60HZ for some reasons. I have an Oled G8 and 4080 for reference. I haven't tested with the mini Display Port but I'm currently using mini-hdmi 2.0

I have a ultrawide and the CRU is so outdated that is has zero support for it. seems like there has to be a better way to get the fuzzy look auto HDR gives but also when exiting a game my screen will show really dark until I turn on and off auto HRD.

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 I wonder that too, I tried to work it out yesterday but with no luck, the issue is when Auto HDR turns to SDR when exit of a game it will darken my screen and it will stay like that until I turn off and on Auto HDR or move the SDR brightness slider down and up again. Now I was able to fix yesterday my monitor in HDR on win11 said it had no support for `HDR Video Streaming. But changing the color management profile to one with Advanced Color of making one of mine a Advanced Color ICC Profile it fixed it not having support. But did not fix the dimming after exit of a game. Now I have a ' (C49RG9x) Samsung, 49" ultra wide, 5120x1400-32:9 @ 120hz. Lastly, a reddit forum said this could be happening because hdr10 needs a 2.4 DP cable but my monitor from what I could tell has only a 1.4 DP cable slot and the HDMI that came with it did not support the monitors FPS at the time but no reason to not use DP cable. Hope this help idk it more a ramble but that my process.

Hey i did everything in the video and the gamma is being fixed when I switch between the auto hdr preset and the srgb preset but the peak brightness is taking a noticeable hit? No, just download the 400 nits profile, that's SDR/HDR sliders brightness, but it comes with 800 nits for Auto HDR supported games on Win11. You don't have to use the CRU app, it's already 800 set for LG C1 and C2

I Just changed my LG C2 to dell alienware aw3423dwf. I Used srgb_to_gamma2p2_400_mhc2 profile and was excelent. Now I'm trying with unspecified profile but its show 240 nits and CRU do nothin with. The Original default profile show 994 nits, the other profile that i used with C2 show 800 nit. But with any profile when i start CRU and check HDR Static metadata its show 138 for peak and if i change it to anythin its do nothin with Peak Brightness. Anyway i have to restart my computer to see the changes on windows menu.... :D So the problem is i stuck on 240 nit with unspecified profile. GPU: 7900 XTX. Thx for any advice!

This has been reportedly an issued with the newest Win11 Insider Program, it seems. These things are still a buggy mess, I'd try Reset on the CRU folder then Restart64, do it again then Restart64

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 thanks so much for replying! I hadn't maxed out the SDR HDR slider since i was set up for 120 nits mastering luminance or roughly 14% on the slider. This is considered ideal for cinematic purposes, but since my cinematic content comes with exclusive containers in HDR anyway, I don't think I need it. Now everything is pretty bright in Win11, but switching the color profiles between SRGB IEC and the downloaded profile still does nothing for my rendered EXRs. Maybe I should try in a game which I know for sure uses AutoHDR, in windowed fullscreen and try to switch on the fly. Big fan of your channel by the way, and I also enjoy your RANTS :D

How has windows not fixed this yet. Seems like such a simple thing for them to fix. Steam deck has hdr working great from sdr to hdr.

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 that’s true but if valve got hdr working Linex and working great I’m sure Microsoft could fix there hdr issues with not much effort. I’m sure it will get fixed eventually but it’s just taking much much to long. Most people are buying hdr monitors now.

thankyou , on my AW2334DW CRU before i made any changes was set to 141 and max frame average was set to 75 , do you know why it would be not the same? also 141 is like 1060 nits where as monitor max is 1000 , could this be why auto hdr would sometimes blow out the highlights in some games ? i have now changed both to 139 and it saying 1015 nits, should i be using 138 instead which gives 996 nits ? is it better to be slightly over or slightly under thank you bro@@plasmatvforgaming9648

Just download the unspecified and change it with the CRU app to be 1000

For all of those using the unspecified profile, it does not work at least on my end after the newest Windows Update. It sets the maximum peak brightness to 240 and it can not be changed . Can anyone report if they are using any other than the default 800 nits?

There's no .exe it's just an ICC profile you have to add through color management

The remote isn't working as I told you. I have it on TV mode, and I have to press a button like 100 times for it to work, I can't work like that to change anything. I'll do it as soon as I get that resolved. I might try to order a new remote to see if that works. Otherwise, let me know if you have a solution for that

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 If the conductive rubber bands are worn out, then you will have to glue foil on them -the ideal option is foil from cigarette packs, it is paper-based and perfectly adheres to the rubber bands. It works.

I’m a bit confused. What’s the difference between Auto HDR fix (this video) vs SDR/HDR trick w/ SDR brightness slider? Just depends on the games you play? Sounds like I should use SDR/HDR trick w/ SDR shader for max brightness w/ BFI, no?

Auto HDR will allow you to use HGIG because the Maxcll can be 800, the SDR HDR trick uses tone mapping to push the brightness when the Maxcll is below 800. Try Dynamic tone mapping with the SDR HDR trick for OLED Motion

Doubtful. If you're using ANYTHING HDR, use Windows 11. Full Stop. Windows 10 does not get HDR improvements and never will.

All columns should be visible. The reason I needed to crush more was to fix th me Gamma, that's no longer necessary. Also my explanation of Limited inside Full and all of that was wrong. The problem was piercewised sRGB force over 2.2

Window HDR calibrations on the store also fixes the issue by settings the peak brightness, 0 nit, and color tone, and thus a better autoHDR use.

If the display is HDR, it should work regardless of the specific one you have. Remember to add it as an advanced color profile

Every time you post a revelatory vid, (which is every vid lol!) about ways to get HDR to actually function as HDR I can't help but wonder why the f*** the big monitor/game/microsoft/gpu companies haven't managed to figure out that they should probably make HDR function properly. I mean, the first entity to actually deliver real, honest to god functional HDR probably stands to make some cheese, no?
