I’ve never, in my 60 plus years of deer hunting, ever owned or shot a 264. There is a story behind this which I love sharing. I come from a family and community of shooters and deer hunters so there are many hunting and range stories here! One is that of a 264. When I was about 12 or 13 my dad and several of his shooting buddies were at one of their range events to see a buddy demonstrate his new pre 64 model 70 in the then fairly new 264 caliber. Dad has brought me along. Everyone wanted a crack at that thunder and lightning sudden death rifle. Boy did the model 70 deliver! The first guy on to the bench settled in slapped the trigger the rifle bucked back and up slamming the scope into his eye and forehead. There was blood flowing from about a 2 inch cut above his eye that just wouldn’t stop! I decided right then , the 264 was not on my wish list. Thought you might get a kick, no pun intended, out of that story. Good luck hunting. Hope you get an Elk for the wall. Looking forward to hearing about your Elk adventure. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and adventures.

Good video. Nothing at all wrong with the older pushfeed you gave to your son. Those post 64's are damn good rifles. Sounds like you need a pre 64 westerner now!!!! Westerner featherweight would be ideal. I like the looks of your BACO though. Take that target scope off though, and use a real hunting scope with capped turrets!!! For elk hunting, you don't need those exposed target turrets. Like you saw, you'll be in trouble if those turrets are turned and you don't know it. Good thing you checked your zero before your hunt!!!

@@lmbear thanks for the comment. You are correct about the scope. I have talking to my son about which scope to put on the 264. I have a Zeiss 4-16. Maybe that is the ticket. Thanks for watching

Always wanted to take an elk with a 45-70 but never lucked out in a draw in WY. You are lucky to live in a great state and can basically walk into your own hunting area. Of course, I live in the People's Republic of Illinois. Have a good season and keep up the videos.

Good luck on your hunt! Very nice rifle and I agree the accubond is one of the best bullets on the market today.

Thanks for the comment I have always liked Nosler. The old days it was the Partition bullets. They are still around but theses accubonds are very popular Thanks for watching

Just bought one of these in 308 for local whitetail. I’m from Kentucky. Would you call it heirloom quality?

It’s a shame that Nikon quit making rifle scopes. I have a couple of their rimfire scopes and they are great! The .264 is a great ‘Ol hunting round. Good luck and have a safe hunt.

True enough about Nikon They did make a good rifle scope

I have a few model 70s and you are correct the push feed rifles are excellent. I personally believe the push feed win is a better rifle than the Ram model 700. And have a few of those . Have 3 Nikon scopes they are quality scopes. Nikon quit making scopes because then wanted out of the hunting industry. Have no experience with the 264 good luck on your hunt.

I wasn't sure why Nikon got out of the scope business. But they did make a quality product. Thanks for watching

I have bought at the pawnshop a model 70 made I believe in the early 90’s it is a control round feed with a detachable magazine and I had never seen one with the detachable magazine anyway it was made in the old Winchester factory and it is a 7 mm mag now I have to find a load it will like but it shot about a half inch group with Remington tip core lokts

Call it what it is- it's a REAL 6.5mm with real ballistics. It will make the 6.5Creedmoor look like a .22LR. How is the recoil with the AR10 .308? I would think it might be your lowest recoiling rifle that would handle Elk.
@brianhoxworth38813 ай бұрын
264 and 308 have the same ft pounds of of felt recoil,I don't think it would matter.

I do have an AR 10. I haven't spent enough time with it to be comfortable hunting with it. Plus it is a couple pounds heavier than the mod 70. Thanks for your great comment
@chrisevansgunshorsesranchi6993 ай бұрын
@@brianhoxworth3881 I think my AR 10 maybe has a bit less recoil because it is so heavy. But I feel real comfortable with this Mod 70 264. It has been my "go to" for a few years. Thanks for watching

9 twist in those rifles i think. It would be less finicky if it was a 7.5 or 8 twist.
