Flying up the Dee Valley in a westerly is DEADLY. I fell 300' sideways on a hang glider many years ago flying the the Llangollen launch.

Mark I’d recommend having a refresher on rotor. Below hill top height is no guarantee of safer air. Good call turning back.

Hi Mark. Frank Manning in Ireland. Lovely video. You have motivated me to pull out my air conception 130 and brush off the cobwebs. I fly pg mostly. PPG Self taught. My take offs are terrible. No time to practice. Do you like the power up method on take off to put air over the wing on nil wind take offs. The dudek reportair is so heavy with wet ground. Fly high and safe.

Some people like power launches but I don't, I don't find them necessary even with nil wind and wet grass. The problem with them is people can tend to use too much power and the force of the wing coming up can stretch lines and put a lot of force on the cage and in some cases cause the cage to flex and hit the prop. Just take a couple of steps back and run forward and get on the power when the wing is 45° up.

Nice video as always! Do you have the Walbro k10 on you Atom? The only carb-icing with a warm engine in flight (other than your recent experience) I've heard of was with the older carburetors that were pre-2019 if I recall correctly.

To be honest I don't know what it is. It's an MY22 Atom 80 bought new in 2023. I've already had 3 or 4 carb icing issues already on this machine.

I don't think what you are talking about is 'wind shear', it's more likely rotor as one other person also commented here. Being down low in the valleys I'd say is the worst place to be in any wind. And any collapse at low level you'd be fckd mate. I'd have climbed up and away from land obstructions. A full collapse and falling out of the sky isn't fun, I speak from experience too, falling out of the sky paragliding in the French Alps a few years ago. Bang. A frontal caused by rotor. I recovered it second attempt. Good thing as I didn't have a lot of height! A collapse with 20Kg+ strapped on your back would be even more dynamic. Height is your friend. I saw in one of your vids you flying cliffs at cliff edge height with your motor on the Isle of Wight. I wouldn't have motored anywhere near it! Above in what I'd reasonably expect to be cleaner air, yes. As it happens there was a vid on YT recently of a paraglider who'd had a collapse and went down in I think the same area. Rotor around a spur. Luckily not injured. Like matey said below 'a refresher on rotor.' recommended!

Great info thanks! I knew it would be bumpy in the valley and fully understand that is rotor. My point was that if I climbed while in the valley I would get hit by wind shear over the tops of the hills. As locals have said, a westerly in this valley is not the best, and I think I made the right decision in turning around and coming out. But you're right though, perhaps I need more respect for these locations.

@@markallisonparamotorLocal knowledge is helpful for sure. I've had about 3 moments in 20 years that still give me a shiver when I look back. Aviation is very unforgiving of errors. I remember another of your vids, I think a fly in a while back. You were flying that day and you actually said 'the others are being sensible' (not flying.) I swear that's what you said 🤥. Being sensible (or cautious) can help you stay alive in flying. 😉. If you have a doubt, bung it. I recall a saying, just because there are people in the air it doesn't necessarily mean it's flyable. Oh and everyone knows the old pilots and bold pilots one!
