Choji has dissociative depression resulting in NPD. An egotistical person with no ego. His condition is super unique and takes an essay to explain. Here's my attempt to explain it: Common symptoms of NPD ( Narcissistic Personality Disorder) include: grandiosity, callous and unemotional traits, disregard for others' feelings, excessive need for admiration, social isolation, a need to surround oneself with important people. In terms of behavior this is Choji to a T. No empathy for others even his friends, complete emotional isolation from everyone and an need to surround himself with only the strongest. If we were judging him just on his actions alone he'd be a narcissist pure and simple. But internally its way more complicated than that. Because Choji's clearly dissociated. He's disconnected from himself. Usually this condition is caused by traumatic incidents, but sometimes it can be induced by severe depression (and puberty.) So you have a weird case where Choji's acting arrogantly while simultaneously having no personality or soul. We strangely never see him "brag" about how awesome he is. Instead, he's just a junkie looking for the next fight with an empty look. It seems contradictory but this can be explained by his dissociative depression. Think of a classic person with NPD as a gold miner shoveling gold into a minecart, to "have the most" and "be the best". They shovel the biggest haul possible. But in Choji's case, there's a hole in his minecart, so he's shoveling away to fill an empty cart that can never be filled since it needs to patched by addressing his dissociation and depression first. So Choji and the token narcissist are 'madly shoveling gold', engaging in the exact same behavior, but for entirely different reasons.

I'm curious about the truth behind him and togames past though, if there is one. Maybe it's explained in the remaining episodes (No spoilers, I'm not caught up yet) It doesn't seem like choji was forced into this or rather he did it to himself. In their past, This crew pretending to be those zinc guys were starting drama. I wonder if it all ties in somehow and if they are or aren't responsible for choji behavior. Guess we'll see

when i read the manga and saw choji biting umemiya, i interpreted as him being a literal lion (as he's the captain of the lion head) and his hits are landing weak as they progress throughout the fight so his last resort is to bite him to see some reaction of pain from umemiya. i didn't think people would see it as corny, man's having some mental breakdown

I can understanding why it's confusing as to why Sako and Hiragi are fighting, but I think it is the same lesson that Ume's trying to teach Sakura and also us, by extension as the audience. Fighting is supposed to be a conversation communicated across fists. Sako knows he's in the wrong and know the reason that he's fighting is dumb, but he also needs reassurance on whether the path he choose for himself was right or wrong and that is why he has to fight Hiragi. Hiragi is still his guide, even at that point because he still looks up to him. It's just the words he is saying contradicts that from our perspective, and it would be easier to write it off as him being a tsundere really. I do have to disagree with your statement about this show not being deep. As a graduate student pursuing Child Psychology, I really think the message about communication in this show is presented fairly well and might just be what is really needed for young boys looking up to older male figures in their lives. I know a lot of young men carry a burden and weight similarly to Sakura and the many other characters and never address their issues which lead them to leading lives like Choji, and they really need individuals like Ume who can both literally and metaphorically knock some sense into them and also just be there for venting. I think due to these matchups, many characters were allowed to grow and change for the better and it goes to show whether you are fighting for a purpose or not, maybe you're just misguided or have lost your way and you need that extra help to really look back on where you started. But it's possible it's not that deep, I don't know, but that's what I got after finishing up the last episode of this season today, which I definitely recommend to finish it.

(I read the manga and finished all 148 chapters in like a day after watching episodes 1-13. I'm eating for more and I'm pissed they left me on a cliff hanger. Like that should be ILLEGAL. )

Are we speaking of the animation? Then yeah obviously Windbreaker as well as Solo Leveling, Demon Slayer, Jjk or some other anime have better visually adapted fights than a show which was ongoing nearly 10 years ago. That's not really a surprise. Are we speaking of the content of the fights, their narrative, their suspense as well as their tactical and emotional impact? Then you should find another show to compare Windbreaker to, because I didn't see a single fight in that anime which came close to the average Naruto fight.

I have to agree with you on Togame's fight with Sakura being the best of the season. It's my favorite as well. The "conversation" of ideals that Sakura and Togame have during the fight leads us to slowly learning more about Togame as a character. Then, the choreo is honestly some of the best stuff in the series. Plus, the way they depicted it felt way less convoluded that the Sako vs Hiragi fight. Great video, dude!
