I came aboard when Holly calmly mentions in a video, "Gecko's back stay cable parted. I patched it with a rolling hitch and took it easy until I got to ..' There were two sailors who lost a shroud, not the rig, stalled their engine and then just drifted for a couple of months. Where ever Holly goes things get fixed. Dan is like a supercharger.

That Y pipe behind the flywheel injects the water into the engine block. Just inside the block can get very blocked with salt/mud/sand. It bakes together there. Bukhs are known for it. On the starboard side block near gearbox low down but above the oil pan there should be a 22mm drain bung. If no water comes out the block is full of saltmud whatever. Poke it out and flush. Of course it might be something different but worth a try. Good luck, Billy.

That oil leak is prob the head gasket starting to fail/ has failed where the oil is pumped into the cyl head to lubricate the rocker shaft/ valve assembly . One thing you really need to do is to remove the drain plug located at the base of the cylinder as chances are the is a huge build up of silt in the water gallery. If this is not cleaned the lower part of the cyclinder will eventually over heat and cause the engine to seize or severe damage to the piston/rings . Good luck and well done

I agree. Holly, I think you need to get/ask/plead for a good marine diesel engine mechanic to do a full check/service. You have learned how crap it is when you have no engine! BTW - I love my fortnightly Mondays 😊👍

Your doing an amazing job Holly & making the most of all the help that you have offered to you. What amazing people you have around you. & Yes, flush your engine out until it is clear of deposits. As for the head, I would consider doing that as well. Actually, with the millage that you do & the places that you go I would consider doing it all. Valve grind, head gasket & rings & bearings, your ring's as specialty because they may be a bit weaker now after getting it hot.

A suggestion from a guy who had a career in the construction business - - when running saws or sanders or are otherwise stirring up fine dust, protect your ears with ear muff -style ear protection. That dust can get in there and cause ear infections. It's also good to save your hearing - when you're old, you'll be glad you did. Good move with pulling up a t-shirt. I used to tie the sleeves behind my head, and have that over my ear muffs and respirator. Tyvek suits are nice, but don't last. Better is canvas coveralls about 3 sizes too large that will last. Keep on rocking, Holly, you need to be at sea!

The oil leak is coming from between the block and head. The head gasket appears to be leaking from the back corner. It might be possible to retorque the head and this might fix the oil seepage. If it were my boat I would clean the area off to spotless. Then keep a very close eye as you run the engine. You will be able to tell where the oil is coming from. Maybe if the engine runs terrific then leave it as a seepage. But if engine runs poorly you might have to have a mechanic take apart the engine to diagnose the running problem. At that point the head gasket gets replaced with a new one anyway. Just trying to help you make good decisions and not waste money. I was a mechanic for 38 years.

Strip the head off the old girl, Holly. Even before that, have a compression check done. This will give some insight into your engine condition. With being a single cylinder engine & having access to the engine machine shops that are available to you while you're in Perth. Other simple checks like injector condition which has a big influence on fuel consumption and engine performance, shouldn't be neglected. The engine cooling system water jackets can be thoroughly cleaned with the assurance of further short-term cooling issues are prevented. This includes the y pipe & drain plug behind the flywheel as described above. With the cylinder head removed it can checked for warpage & valve guide wear, in turn giving you an assurance of reliability. However, in discovering if these components all being in need of drastic attention & reliability is of utmost importance as it really should be Holly, a complete engine rebuild or replacement of same is a serious consideration without any doubt... You are a single handle yachts woman & at the mercy of an aggressive sea with no respect for an ill-prepared craft of a y size...

Hi Holly, great job and great videos. The Bukh is a great engine here are a few comments from myself, I have a Bukh DV20 which has a lot of the same parts etc. When flushing the cooling system its necessary to either run the engine to operating temperature so the thermostat opens or remove the thermostat and block the bypass circuit. The way I would flush the engine is with some acid (brick cleaner will work) mixed with water in a bucket with the pickup hose in, disconnect the water exhaust injection hose and rout this to the bucket also then run the engine so the liquid circulates, run till the water is quite hot, It is advisable to connect a hose to the exhaust injection so the exhaust keeps cool but be careful because you don't want the water to enter the engine through the exhaust. Let the engine sit with acid in it overnight and do another flush in the morning till the water is hot again, then put it all back together again. You could have a blockage in the exhaust injection elbow this is quite common. The small pipe with the two hoses connected to it can be removed without removing the flywheel, if you do remove the flywheel new bolts are recommended but whatever you do use locktite on the bolts. Other people have suggested that the paddle has come unbonded from the drive collar, this is also a common failure. While you are working on the cooling system I would strongly recommend checking the waterpump seals and the yell tale holes, its a very common failure and your engine will fill with sea water if you don't notice water coming from the tell tales. It's important to use marine quality seals, tractor seals will rust very quickly, also the shaft should have a 'thrower' O ring on it to throw any water off the shaft so it will exit through the tell tales, the specification of the O ring isn't critical just as long as its a snug fit on the shaft. The oil leaking my opinion is probably the rocker cover or the head gasket. If it's the head gasket you could try torqued the head, the head gasket is quite expensive but I would get one as a spare if you don't have one. Keep a close eye on the leak, it may stay the same for years but make sure your oil pressure warning is functioning well in case it suddenly becomes much worse, my DV20 has an audible alarm that I can hear in the cockpit with the engine running. The first thing I would do is give it a real good degreasing. What I could see in the wobbly video it appears to becoming out between the head and the block. That would mean your head gasket is failing and would have it looked at before leaving civilisation. However, oil can travel. I would make sure it’s not coming from the rocker cover. That’s an easy and cheap fix. The second thing I would check is where is the oil pump on this motor? Find it and make sure it’s not leaking. Make sure there isn’t a loose oil line with a very slow leak. Let us know what you find. I love your maintenance videos so keep them coming. Good luck and stay safe.

I have had several problems with cooling water in the past. If your raw water strainer is above the boat's waterline, it may leak air, and your raw water pump will not prime. Also, while your exhaust mixing elbow looks new, there maybe a blockage within the mixing elbow so suggest running a wire from the water inlet down through the the mixing elbow. Good luck.

Good to see Geck's bottom get the full treatment. Much like a good roof over your head, a boat needs a good dry bottom. The epoxy and three coats of bottom paint should seal it up nice. What great help from your shore based crew, shows how kind people can be. True hippie spirit. Good stuff.

Holly, firstly you're a bloody legend mate, as they'd say in Australia, secondly you're so blessed to have such wonderful friends that were willing and able to help you out with all the work that you needed to get done, not to mention giving you all their surplus paints of various descriptions, as for your haulout and work required you actually got off really lightly considering how long the Geck has been in the water and how many miles you've put under her keel. When I hauled my new to me steel Van De Stadt 34' after nearly 3 years of ownership and since her last haulout, after pressure washing and scraping her bum I discovered that the epoxy bitumen coating and antifouling was not chemically bonded to the primer as is required for a sound bottom job especially on a steel boat, this then precipitated the sanding off of all the antifouling, epoxy bitumen and at least partial removal of the original epoxy primer, added to that, there was some epoxy fairing compound which also had to be removed, I did it all alone, with occasional help from a casual worker, then had to re-prime the entire bottom with 2 coats of epoxy primer, then epoxy bitumen and the antifoul had to be applied before the epoxy bitumen cured completely to create the correct chemical bond, it took almost a full month of sanding, priming, fairing, priming again, epoxy bitumen and antifoul, for several nights I'd have to go back to the boat at anything from 9 PM to 3 AM to apply the antifouling before the bitumen cured, I feel your pain but it's not that bad, I've been on the hard for 20 months now doing a comprehensive maintenance, rebuild, refit project including new engine, diesel tanks, structural modifications and repairs, new wiring, new electronics, new portlights, hull and deck paint, new hatches and dorades, new interior spaces modified from the original design, new anchor locker and windlass sub-frame, new exhaust system, fuel polishing system, fresh and raw water pumps, gas water heater, new shower, head and plumbing, new refrigeration. Girl, like I said I feel your pain, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Fair winds Holly, you're inspiring a lot of people Remember there's always someone struggling more than that to achieve their sailing dreams and aspirations

if you have not been changing your zincs sometimes you can have electrolysis eating your cooling system can be in the coolers, the cylinders block , the head or wherever there is contact with raw water. these cracks/holes will open/expand as the engine warms up, they can affect the gasket sealing surfaces also

hi holly, I have experienced that the impeller in the cooling pump was damaged in the gluing to the pipe in the middle, and you can't see it immediately, the whole pump housing can also be worn, so a fresh impeller is often needed to work. p.s. replace the entire pump with a new one if you want to be safe Love you video Mvh.kurt

Holly, where the water comes out of the heat exchanger and goes into the exhaust is a common place for a blockage to develop with carbon buildup. This is where the raw water that has come through the heat exchanger meets the hot exhaust gasses with the carbon in it from combustion. I had mine totaally clog up on my C&C 37 with a yaaha diesel. I removed it and cleaned it out with a drill bit at first them wire brushes to get it cleaned out on the inside. If that is not it then your next place to look would be the heat exchanger iteself to see if raw water is passing through it. Make sure you open up that exhanst elbo and be sure it is clean. It is a common failure point. The oil leak looks like it is probably a head gasket leaking oil. I would pull the head and put a new gasket on it and torque it down properly. Hopefuly you did not warp it by getting it over heated. If so it might need to be resurfaced at a machine shop.

Soo glad you didn't reapply gelcoat! Gelcoat is applied during manufacture to help the fiberglass hull separate from the mold, and to give a glossy appearance. However, in practice, gelcoat has numerous tiny pores that allow water to get underneath and create bubbles and pits. When redoing a hull I recommend removing the gelcoat as soon as possible to mitigate future issues. Your bottom job is exactly as I would do mine.

I would say check the head casket like other posters have said. Finding it harder to start recently would point to that as well. My bukh 20 blew a gasket but also cracked the head when it overheated. I had it cold welded and planned. If the head bolts are not up to torque then don’t just tighten you will do more damage. All the best.

I installed a bidet in my boat because a clean bottom is important while sailing. Did you ever check the torque on the cylinder head bolts? Sometimes they loosen a bit after a new gasket.

I haven't watched the entire video yet, so maybe you found the cooling issue. I had the same type issue twice on my boat during the 9 years I sailed her. Turned out it was carbon build-up in the exhaust mixing elbow. Just had to chip away at the carbon to get the water flowing again.

You could still have a blockage in the engine. You need to remove the thermostat and block the bypass pipe to force water through the block .Ideally run an acid flush through the engine block for a few hours using a bilge pump and a big bucket of acid water solution, I used brick cleaning solution. When the engine is cool the thermostat ensures the water is bypassed so it reaches temp quick and you will have water flow but when it gets hot and the thermostat opens up then the water might stop flowing through the engine block due to a blockage.

We sailed into Townsville last year had a dreat time loved it also managed to get a huge Stauner just next to the pier !!! Ishowed it to loads of the locals they said it was by far the biggest they had seen.

Have you heard of shark skin hulls? They are awesome but expensive. Seen it on a racing vessel. It gave them almost a 3-knot advantage. Barnacles have trouble connecting. Made less of a wake and went smother through the water.

I'm thinking the primary cost was some beer. Those guys were amazing helping you. Brother has hit the mark with the replace of the exhaust hose as I've seen those fail at night with people sleeping and fill the cabin with CO. Very dangerous ! Alarm would be good .

Read all the comments and did not see anyone suggest a failed impeller. I have seen the brass/bronze insert lose its connect with the rubber. The insert will spin but the impeller because of friction will not. I always carry spare impeller. Being from Canada, when winterizing, I use a desalt product yearly then flush with fresh water. Easiest way I found was attach long hose to raw water side of impeller pump, place hose and desalt supply into bucker in cockpit and make sure when running the engine the bucket doesnt run dry. When desalt solution has run thru, then add fresh water supply. Run long enough to heat engine to run temp and ensure thermostat opens and flush entire engine. Amazing amount of crap comes out every year. Mine is a 1978 Yanmar single, still runs like a charm.

Great work. Even I'm exhausted. In that stowage area. I love using the upper hand rails in my boat's main cabin to hang things. All my PFDs have short bits of rope that I tie to them with a quick release half hitch. Looking at van conversions: Too many hard cabinets. I became a fan of hanging bags. It's really easy to make super cheap 'dry bags,' that might not hold up in a dinghy and on the beach, but hanging inside keep things dry and free of boat smell. Great for clothes. Heavier bags for heavier stuff. Different colors. (I was on a boat with 4 blue bags... Where is the...? Whole crew: "It's in the ....!!") Hooks are great but if head is sometimes near, make a rail that stands off and put the hooks on the inside. And in that space a rail at the top and one halfway. Just being a busy body.

Have you check the exhust albue, there where the exhoust sits, and comming from the engine, this will over time be rusted inside, and kan block the water outlet.

I always change those wet exhausts to dry exhausts, It needs a bit of messing about--but anything they gets rid of a salt water heat exchanger and seawater strainers and impellers has to be a plus. Keel cooling is SO much better a system of engine cooling, and a shielded exhaust pipe can exit anywhere as long as it is well above the waterline and shielded rain rainwater ingress.

That was so good and for the leak it looks like a rocker cover Gasket all you need to do is make sure all the bolts or screws holing the rocker cover on are tight make sure the oil level is correct. That looks to high for head gasket from the video you shown.

Check the "water" hoses always 2 ways.. friend had a rubber hose with a loose piece inside that blocked it one way.. lol took weeks to figure that one out.

I was reading some forums about the Bukh DV10 and people said oil leaks could be anything from the rear main outlet shaft seal, blocked vacuum valve, rusted oil feed pipe, oil pump seal, or if the oil rings are toast, apparently this can pressurize the crankcase and cause oil to seep out. Hopefully that's not what's happening.
