@northcountrywoodcraftny5953
@northcountrywoodcraftny5953 Жыл бұрын
@@FallenActual it won't fall out, the amount of friction on that bar is enough to hang off of it while hitting it, there is 70-80lbs of force on the bar rn, there is no possible way to get the bar out when power is on it. If the bar came out and the spring unspun 7 turns, he would be fine, I've had way bigger springs break in front of my face with 14 turns on it, I was fine, people get hurt when the bar slips out of thier hand and it hits you, they use the wrong steel and it snaps, comes around and impales you, there are many other ways to do it wrong and get hurt but this guy isn't doing any of those, I know because I've seen it all.

It's way easier to count revolutions of the set screws, you can get two by hand then then add five and a half for a seven foot door. Then just slide it over by hand with the bar, no smacking. Stand to one side not right in front. If you haven't been trained don't fuck with them.

I used to install doors professionally in commercial places, those winding bars are dangerous, like really really really really dangerous. Please don't mess with a torsion system on a garage door unless you know what you are doing. On a side note, I would always add at least an extra turn on the spring that way in a year or two when the spring starts to lose its torsion power it is actually at the tension that's needed

Hey, just paint a line on the spring from end to end when the spring has no turns on it. Then as you put tension on the spring, each turn is a twist on the paint line. 7 foot door get 7 1/2 turns so that’s 7 1/2 twists on the paint line. Way easier then counting and then having your buddy ask you a question half way through winding the spring and forgetting your count. Lol.

Ive done this on my own door. I didnt tension the spring like this. Installed new door and track and everything. With the door at horizontal, use vice grips to lock the door in place and undo the last panel. When the door is all the way up, the spring has little tension so its easy to wrap the cable around the pulley and add just a bit of tension. Hook the bottom panel up and hand lower the door to feel it out and make sure its not bound up. Its much easier that way but only works in some cases

Use to scare the 💩 out of me when we would tension the 16 to 18ft tall industrial door springs. I've seen one snap before. Lucky enough, just our ear drums were ringing for a while and no serious injuries. Did that gig in my late teens but also did loading dock systems and after seeing my co-worker have his arm almost guillotined off from the should down when a 24 ft 30 yr old loading dock had its hydraulics give out, i decided to quit. We knew the problem before hand and it was scary bc it would do it randomly when lifting. So i convinced my senior to let me hang on to him while he went in to put the safety stand, I pulled his ass out the second I thought it was gonna happened and just as I got most of him out, it gave way but although he didn't lose his arm, his shoulder was so black n blue bc the dock lip did catch him but we got his arm out in time. His shoulder looked like someone just wolloped it from above with a baseball bat but since he was an old timer he was saying crap to the boss except the dock couldn't be salvaged. Screw that shit. Don't play with those springs on ur house garage either unless u know what ur doing.

If you draw a line with a white marker you can count the lines after you wind. Amd from a service end its easy to look at the spring and see if the spring slipped, or unwound, or when replacing a high lift or vertical lift you spec the spring wire, ID, and Lengths and rewind the new the same winds as the old. If its standar 12" or 15" radius. And regular drums its 1 wind per foot of the door height and add 1/2 to 3/4 depending if you have windows and which section they are in if windows are in the top only add 1/2 if windows are in the third section add 3/4

Pro tip for you homeowners.....When the spring in NOT under tension, stick 2 long pieces of tape down the length of the spring leaving a 1/2 gap between them, use white spray paint and spray between the tape strips and let dry. When adding tension/charging the spring (winding) the white paint strip will make coils around the spring making it easier to count the complete turns and keep track of the tension!

Don’t most springs already have a paint stripe down the middle? I know mine do. That way you know how many turns you have in. It seems to me that every time I look at Spring’s I always see the paint stripe down the side of the coil.

@@frankvadnais3536 Most do, but not all and if you're repairing an existing door that's been there for a while and using the same springs they are probably faded to the point of not being able to see them.

Pro tip, spray paint a straight line on the spring after it is fully loaded at 7.5 windings, makes it a lot easier for next time it needs to be adjusted

A lot of springs these days come with a line printed on them from the supplier. I used lumber chalk instead of paint because it's easier to have on hand.

When the garage gets slow, WD40 on the coils helps until repairs arrive. Lasted 2 wks. Hurricane season, slow service. But it works. Protect those cars!

I’ve had these lock up on me trying to open the garage door once. My brother and me pulled on the door so hard that the spring part exploded and sent pieces flying by our faces. Sounded like a car bomb going off. Thankfully neither of us were injured that day. That’s all that could think of seeing this guy crank that spring down.

The spring can explode into pieces? Probably it was hardened too much? I recently had to replace broken cable so had to unwind and rewind the springs. It was pretty hard physically especially last 5 turns. But i didn't realize it's also so dangerous.

@@nchurly yea our springs were 35 yrs old on 10x10 industrial solid wood doors. The doors probably weighed 900 lbs lol 😂 just changed em out to aluminum doors w all new track and springs.

DO NOT HIT IT !!! Installing a brand new one could kill you doing that but If you ever try messing with an old door this will most certainly kill you they will break and cut your head off. That Spring has enough force to slice through all the 2x 4s in that wall

I knew a guy that got hit in the head with a winding bar, he was wearing a hard hat when he got hit, he has been on disability for ten years now, his mother takes care of him because he has the mental capacity of a toddler. And that was just a spring for a 8x7 door, the springs used in really big doors are five times bigger

Another trick you can do is at the start before you even start Gables on the drums but at rest. Take a can of spray paint or soapstone and draw straight line down their spring. Then you can easily count the rotations of that bar when you wind it. I usually do full rotations 7 or 8 depending on how heavy the door is or if it's a single spring or double spring
