It is best not to wind the weight all the way to the top. You can damage it, the weight may get stuck. It should be up just enough that you still can see the top cap of the weight.

Hello! My grandfather passed recently and left us a lovely Sligh clock very similar to this one. He was always the one to care for the clock. I was able to find a manual and the key and wound the left and right weights and got the pendulum swinging again. It seems to be keeping time. However, I’m not able to wind the middle weight, it gets “stuck” and the minute hand stops when I try. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this? Or why it would be happening? That's an awesome story. Glad he left you a beautiful clock and so sorry for your recent loss. I unfortunately do not know how to fix that, I will refer you to one of my good friends, I will have him reply to this comment with any suggestions to help you fix it.

If I had to guess, it's likely there's a tangle in the cable where the weight hangs off of. I've never heard of an issue like this before, but that's definitely my first guess. I'm of course not an expert at repairs, just a beginner. Hope this helps in some way.

I remember being allowed to wind these types of grandfather clocks every time i went into a jewellers called F.Hinds, they don’t sell grandfather clocks now :(

To keep the power going to them, winding power/weights provide power to the clock in order for them to run. When the clocks run, they unwind over time.

I just hung a Gebruder Resch 3 weight regulator that I bought earlier this week. I haven't needed to wind it yet. Should I go about it the same way, or lightly assist the weights while winding? This is the oldest (1880), most elaborate clock I've owned so far, don't want to mess it up.

Probably wouldn't hurt to gently assists the weights while winding it. If you want to play it safe.

Hello, i just bought a Howard Miller used and when I got it, the pulleys were wound so far up that I can’t attach the weights to start the clock, please could you tell me how to lower the pulleys so I can attach the weights and begin using the clock? Thank you!

What you can do to lower the weights is pull slightly on the pulleys with your hand while chiming the clock on both the melody chimes and the hour strike, that should help lower the left and right pulleys. (Left is for hour strike, right is for 15 minute melodies) do the same by starting the pendulum and pull slightly on the middle pulley. (The middle pulley is for running power) Hopefully this works.

When you wind up the middle weight, will the second hand continue to go or not?

No it typically goes backwards because weight must be pulling down on the pulley in order for it to run

I just got a ridgeway clock and when it was stored the weights were wound up and the middle one was removed. I have all the parts but need to get the middle pulley down so I can connect the center weight. How would you drop the pulley down to be able to connect it?

Pull down on the pulley slightly and start the pendulum. That will start moving the weight down very very slowly. It will take a little time but it should work

Hey James, I have the same clock! I accidentally over winded it and now the weights won’t come down at all. Is that normal or something I should seek out repair for? I’m located in Michigan too :)

Is the clock running? If it’s running the weights should move down over time. Otherwise if they’re not a repair may be needed. (Cool to meet another Michigander by the way!)

@@Jamestube8439 The guy threw it out saying his wife didn't like how it looked. So I assumed so, but it's missing the middle weight and key. So no idea. The mechanisms look pretty clean. It's a Howard Miller 610-875 which looks similar to the 874. (From my advanced grand father clocks research of 1 day 😆).

Does anyone know how to "unwind" the clock? im writing a story and i have a character remove some cogs from the grandfather clock. but I am struggling a bit to find information about how to stop them / turn them off? any information is helpful :'D

Do you mean to unwind it to turn the clock off? If so the only way to unwind it is to let it wind down itself, it could take a week or a month depending on if it's a 7 day clock or a 31 day clock.

Thank you! I have a Sligh 0824-01-AN and I can’t find one on,Jen for any information. I had purchased it from one of my sisters and there were no instructions or information on it for setting chimes. Etc. I’m also looking for a value on it to sell as I am now single and downsizing to move.

I have a Howard miller grandfather clock it chime when it want to then stop chiming, and the pendulum stop moving, after a couple hours. The second tune it start chiming, and moving then the pendulum stop moving, and stop chime, after couple hours, the 3rd tune it move but don't chime 🤔 then the pendulum stop moving a couple hours again smh.😩😫

The movement may need to be oiled and/or cleaned.

I would NEVER buy a clock like that, especially what if I accidentally break it when I wind it or what if I lose the key Also, there’s a lot of sensitive moving parts, which means I’m very prone to accidentally breaking it! So I DO NOT recommend wasting your hard earned money on that clock! Just buy an atomic digital wall clock instead, and it even sets the time itself!!! Overall, I give that clock minus 100 stars!

I completely disagree with you. You’d have to try to wind it incorrectly to break it. Also leave the key in keyhole and you won’t lose it. Digital clocks are great but preserving these older treasures is why I collect them.

@@jkropp79 You have a great point and for every clock I’ve wound, I’ve never broken one. You’d have to try to wind it incorrectly to break it.
