Great to see this sword getting some more coverage. I think it's a fantastic design and really deserves more attention given how unusual it is.

The uniqueness is charming to some and off-putting to others.. I think the feeling of this sword can be universally appreciated. You and Windlass really did a great job with this one. Well done sir!

@Matthew_Jensen thanks! I think if anything that they've dialled the precision even further with the newest batch of 3. At the end of the day this is about training the best craftsmen they have, and they are constantly improving and getting more experienced.

@@scholagladiatoria I would like to personally thank you for making this line of swords happen! I don't have a lot of money for swords. So high quality, high performance affordable swords like this are MUCH appreciated. And further more, thank you for being a good influence on windlass, the models theyve made recently like the 1796 and new signature series they just came out with seem very promising hopefully they keep improving their models and make more decent swords in my price range. The new batch is really cool BTW! 🤘💀 I want them all! Thanks again cheers 🍻

This is like a Twilight Zone Matt Jensen video. A Windlass sword getting kudos isn’t something I thought I’d ever see, just by virtue of Windlass being Windlass and NOT changing……like ever. I’m pleasantly surprised by the visuals and its performance through testing, light or otherwise. Great review as always, and it’s awesome to see your son out there swinging steel as well.

I have two of the RA-Windlass series and they are genuinely good, especially considering the price point for pretty accurate replicas. Some occasional QC issues remain, but if your vendor has a good return policy, they are a no brainer, if you want to get a variety of "reference" swords.

Windlass has been surprising the past few years. I think the collaboration with Matt Easton genuinely brought in more business, and they're making efforts to change other swords. Their 1796 cav sabre is one of the best proportioned sabres on the reproduction market

Glad to see they've picked up a bit. i happened across 3 windlass swords at an estate sale for next to nothing and snatched them up, but after cleaning them up found them disappointing. Handled like a brick. No distal taper yadda yadda, you've heard it all before. I wouldn't have pulled the trigger on a $500 offering after that, but endorsements like this sure help with that. Hopefully some of their better products can get this kind of visibility.

I recognized the sword and had to see the video. I like how unbiased you made your opinion, i really appreciate that about you Sir. And what you said about windlass is so true, they really can do things if they want. Because some of their work is down right sloppy. I am certain Matt had a very positive impact on that line too. Thats why i have one of them on my wishlist :D

the counted forward hilt was probably designed to help you tell where the edge is considering that it has a largely symmetrical blade shape but is surprisingly single edged

I was surprised that it didn't have a full width straight taper to a fine edge. I very much enjoy your videos since they activate my ASMR. That is a hell of a bonus in a video. I got one of the RA Windlass swords as well and also found it very nice in the context of it's price. Anyway, thanks.

@FiliiMartis yesh, I deleted my videos because the German weapon law was tightened, that was a bit too tricky for me ... unfortunately😕 this was such a unique sword i had to get it...the wide blade cuts amazing! i nobody told me it was a Windlass i would had never noticed! a really big step up from the usual Windlass stuff!

@@TheCrusader1099 I understand... and I'm really sorry to hear about Germany, which I saw it as a more blade friendly country. Please don't go the UK route. 😒I already had the Type XIV from this collection, and my choice wouldn't have been this single edged one in particular. I expect it to cut really well, and I really like the grip, but man it's an ugly sword from a lot of perspectives 😅. But yesterday, I made use of a 50% off Black Friday deal and got the single edged sword as well. I have some Landskn Echtemporium messers (and you know how sharp those are), but I expect this one (after sharpening it) to cut better through water bottles and the like.👍

@@FiliiMartis yeah if you are getting used to the looks its a great sword! i personally my landknecht emporium messer cuts better. dont get me wrong, the Windlass cuts very good, but its heavier than the Messer...but in a battle i would always bet my life on the Windlass.

I have the 1796LC and it is similarly flexible at the tip, so much so I thought I had bent it twice on a bad cut because it flexes under its own weight a bit. This one is 1080 too, don't know if that means much differences in toughness vs the normal 1065, but it rusts much easier than my other Windlass even if it isn't harder. Unfortunately I have heard of and whitnessed a lot of tilted grips and bad grinds with the RA line and the 1796LC, seems they unfortunately do have trouble fitting the grips on straight with these swords for some reason. Maybe because they are new and not Windlass-standard and they need to learn?

"...and didn't have a wheel pommel!" means instant pick. lol I'm not actually bothered by wheel pommels, but I don't favor them either, I'm just indifferent. I do like an "onion" one, for lack of better descriptor.

"It's a razor blade as tall as he is". Kudos to your son who is geared up to be a swordsman and a reviewer in no time. This is such a nice sword, shame that it has been overlooked. Type 5 falchions are almost non-existent on the reproduction market. This one really fills a niche.

14:18 I worry breaking this sword would send the wrong message to manufacturers who are making nimble, light cutting blades. I'd love a sword that sails through water bottles and tatami, I don't want manufacturers beefing them up into robust machetes. I know destructive testing is your thing, but to me this sword looks short, thin and sharp. There are much beefier swords in this collaboration series where destructive testing might be really interesting. Something designed to work against armour.

Oh geez, I love that Cinquedea sword. Always had kind of thing for that type of blade. Don't know if it's any good, don't have any ability to use beyond, ya know, poorly. But I kind of have a compelling to maybe get one. It can go right along with my gladius and katana that I just look at. Lol.

this type of pommel is better for hand and a half hilts than for straightly 1 handed hilts since your off hand can easily turn gripping it

So I've been wanting to save up to get a basket hilted sword at some point and have narrowed it down to 2 swords. I was wondering if you would be able to do destruction tests on them eventually to help me make my decision of which one to get. They're the Kingston Arms Renaissance Side Sword and the Lk Chen Saxony German Rapier.

Your son cutting with it, well you know what I mean, convinced me to just get one (the wedge wide blade and that tapered grip will make for a good cuter; even if the blade looks boring on screen). I saw it at 51% off on Royal Armouries shop (Black Friday). If I don't act on the deal, it would be like throwing away money. It would be stupid not to get it.😄[yea, yea, I can use girl math if it's convenient for me to get another sword 😏]

0:20 Thats a bad picture of "Single-Edged Arming Sword" lol... That pretty sloppy/lazy :S However this is interesting. Having watched so many katana destruction tests on this channel, im always curious about how other swords (of generally "same" metals) are holding up. Have they the same weakness' and restrictions?... Even though we are better at the technology of understanding the metals today, are we ACTUALLY better at also producing the metals? Im hoping this sword breaks aswell. Then the quality of the metal/technology is the problem and not the design of the modern katana blade, and ppl will realize and start to become decent smiths and the end user ends up with a durable sword. Which I think we all would love to see.

i would assume that they would perform badly with bad edge alignment cuts, and the sides are also the weak point, so no blocking with the sides, only the edge. i have what i would call an period accurate medieval bastard sword, the edges are sharp, and maintains it's sharpness, although it's tempering is wack, and is able to be bent and stay bent with light pressure on the knee, with relatively no resistance but when striking with it, as long as the edge alignment is good and swung with proper form, it won't bend notably, even with full power swings that will chop 1-2 inches into wood(green), and when bent, it's able to be straightened relatively easily. btw, this isn't an antique, it's just an cheap rusty Pakistan sword that i spent an few months on and off, customizing into an passible sword with an hand file, the cross-section is lenticular/hexagonal(convex grind), for 20inches and the bottom 23 inches is hexagonal, with the factory thick bevel removed, and turned into basically an scandi grind, the pommel and guard are solid iron, the handle is full tang, with leather strip wrap, although i first modifyed the wood slabs, into an more triagle shape, and widened the handle where the right hand is, by taping an shortened, spit chopstick, and some paper towels for padding, while leaving the bottom 2 inches unwidened, then some other stuff, anyhow, it handles very well, although it's heavy, an 3lbs 9oz the balance is 5inches from guard, i would consider it's flaws as historical, since historic medieval euro swords were soft(20hrc) known to bend with bad edge alignment cuts, or even over the knee, questionable tempering(some even had no tempering), it's stats are well within period standards, and to be honest, is pretty fun for an abuse sword, and it's speed/power(with proper stances) is good, but not comparable to well tempered modern steel. although i would expect modern steel to be more brittle after edge damage
