I have done this every year for the 3 AC units I have. I always have my kids help me. Last year, my daughters friend was over and was complaining that she was bugging her parents to get her a new AC for her bedroom because hers was barely working. With her parents permission, I took hers out and cleaned it very thoroughly and made sure she helped. It was great watching my daughter basicaly be the one to teach her what to do and why you should do it every year. She actually stopped in mid sentence and looked at me and said "OMG I sound like you!! Mom is right!!" Her friend replied "At least your dad teaches you stuff that us actually useful and you remember it." We put her AC back in and what do you know... it was blowing out nice very cold air. Two days later I was invited over to talk to her parents and ultimately spent the next few hours showing them with them participating how to clean and maintain the other 2 AC's they have. Her dad actually thanked me for saving him a bunch of money.

Great video. I clean both my window AC's 11,000 and 12,000 BTU's just like you did in the video around every April just before the hot weather kicks in. Both my AC's are 11 years old and cool rooms as if they were brand new. Bought the AC's used for $100 each 11 years ago, getting my moneys worth. This past January I was cleaning bathroom tiles with Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Grime Fighter it worked so well in the bathroom the idea hit me to use this product for the cleaning of my AC's. When this product is sprayed it expands. I used it on the coils of the AC's, waited 5 minutes, hosed down the coils. Let me tell you, the product worked so well I got the shine back on the coils. I also used the Scrubbing Bubbles on the bottom tray of the AC, the inside and outside of the AC casing, hosed them down it worked fantastic. During the summer months when the AC's run almost around the clock I clean the filters at least once a week. Take care of the AC and it will take care of you.

dirty coils are a major cause of efficiency issues in AC units. both central as well as window/free standing units. Glad to see somebody took the time to put a tutorial together about how to clean these. If you notice your home's central air starting to not do as good of a job it's a good idea to take the hose and wash off the coils on the outside condenser unit.

as a technician another thing to point out is that the coils need to be kept straight, bending enough of them will block airflow through the unit and cause similar issues, fin comb brushes are pretty cheap alternatively you can use a flat head screwdriver and some patience, also be careful with using dish soap on the coils and inside the unit as it will corrode the copper lineset potentially leading to a leak so rinse extremely thoroughly, preferably you want to use the foaming spray linked in the pinned comment or an equivalent personally I use Nucalgon condenser coil cleaner which dries without leading a residue, but does have a habit of softening the plastic shell on my AC unit.

quick tips: clean ftont filter and back of unit 1-2 per yr, depending on usage. This negates having to remove unit and disassemble. For back cleaning, spray garden hose at a 45 degree , not directly head on. These two methods will remove 90 % or more of dust/dirt and unit will operate as itvshould. Been doing this for 20+ yrs. Great method for those that live on 2-3 FL , or those with larger units.

You either just remove screws and then the outer case and so on until you get to the parts you want to grease or freaking spray a bunch WD-40 in where you can reach with the attached tubes they come with, let it dry out completely and turn it on. Taking a window unit to an expert is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Quick way to get totally ripped off when you can DYI easily or just shell out $100-$200 or less for a new one! Have you see anything or tried anything to clean out the mold (if there was any)? My ac has a styrofoam looking piece around a fan part of the ac and it has mold on it. Great video. With 5 units, I do this every year. Knowing industrial maint, I go a little further and unscrew and move the condenser to get at the backside where the dust clogs the condenser. The black dots in the evap portion are dirt/mildew. Unfortunately that part is now usually surrounded by styrofoam, so be careful wiping in and around the evap fan blades. The evap part is where Legionaires can form, so disinfecting it is important...especially where anyone in the room has breathing issues to begin with. So many units get tossed when it's only a clogged condenser.

You may need to spray into those vents. They can develope mold which can catch dust and dirt. Also, an old toothbrush can do wonders getting stuck on dirt loose. Otherwise, a great video! Most of the things that I have learned cleaning them myelf. My conditioner is now 19 1/2 years old, but is working as good as new. The motor did eventually end up squealing at one point at high volume. This was due to the oil having dried up completely at the bearing felt pad locations. With a little patience and a little know how, I figured out how to re-oil the felt pads, even though it was a fully closed and sealed motor. That brought the motor back to having a quiet life. Other than that, the front plastic panel had turned yellowish over the years, so I de-yellowed that by using ICE CREAM. ICE CREAM is a women's hair bleach that contains 12% Hydrogen Peroxide. So, by taking care of what you own, you cut costs down significantly, just as is the case of my stainless steel microwave oven. It is now 18 years old, but it basically looks a good as the day I bought it. I have had to replace a door micro-switch a coupe of times, and replace the main fuse and a thermal fuse, but I simply obtained those parts from someone else's oven that they had tossed onto the curb for disposal. I also repaired the turntable motor when it stopped working. A few drops of glue was all it needed. So overall, the total repair cost over those 18 years, was $1.49. So that's roughly 8 cents a year. The oven itself was a store show model, so it only cost me $45. That amounts to $2.50 per year for 18 years. LOL

What you’re looking at with debris is a lack of heat transfer, this ac is a heat pump, meaning it removes heat from a space. If there is low airflow there will not be a heat transfer the coils are the only important objects to keep clean
@johnwild-st4ed
@johnwild-st4ed 3 жыл бұрын
 @Darin P Except he's not really wrong though. AC units are a heat pump, they're just one-directional. A standard AC unit is just creating (and hopefully maintaining) a simple "cold" to "hot" temperature gradient. This is accomplished by pumping a refrigerant through a condenser coil and an evaporator coil (and some specialized valves) using a compressor, not some "dehumidifying process". The refrigerant undergoes a phase change at each coil. Liquid to gas (e.g. evaporation) at the evaporator coil, and gas to liquid (e.g. condensation) at the condenser coil. Evaporation is endothermic and condensation is exothermic. Heat is drawn into the refrigerant when it evaporates at the evap coil, and released from the refrigerant when it condenses at the condenser coil. AC units are arranged in such a way that air from in the home is blown around the evap coil and back into the home, while air from outside the home is blown around the condenser coil and expelled outside. So, an AC unit quite literally pumps heat from inside the home to outside the home. Dirt, dust, grime, and other debris slow down heat transfer between the coils and surrounding air and limit air flow rates from around those coils in the case, which is essentially what Brandon said.

I do this every fall with all my units including my portables. I had a Carrier from 1967 that worked over 40 years and a Kenmore for 30 years that heated as well with the compressor and coil when it got colder. They both still worked when I moved and had to leave them behind. People are afraid to spray them because of the obvious reason, electrical short. Worst case the circuit break and or GFI would trip and most newer units have a GFI on there plugs, I think it is now mandatory. I just be careful not to spray the electronics. Ether way, I do it in the Fall when the cooling season is done so the are way dried out by spring!

I do the same for mine when it gets dirty. I cleaned mine with a cleaner that kills mold and mildew , because my window unit will build up mold and mildew , and produces a bad smell . I cleaned the unit real good in the early spring before it starts getting hot . It runs like new , no smell , and it gets really cold . I also built a awning over my window unit to help protect it from the elements. I have a lot of trees around my house , things will fall out of the trees on to the unit , and will get in side of it and make it nasty . I just built the awning so far I have not seen anything on or in side the unit . I believe the awning will benefit me for years to come .

@@SilentBlunts I would just try cleaning the unit . If you can get it out of your window , try to spray it out with a water hose and use a spray cleaner that will kill mold and mildew , and has a degreaser in it . If you have trees around and hanging over your unit , stuff can fall out of the trees in to your unit and get nasty inside of it. And your unit should have a drain hole so it can drain water out of it properly. The hole can get stopped up with debris and not drain. You will have to clean it out so the water can drain out like it is supposed to. After cleaning the unit , and it is still blowing hot air , it may need to be fixed or replaced .
