My dog recently pulled a number on one of my window sills. House was built 2013, I was forecasting thousands of dollars on this repair but after watching this I'm feeling confident. Thank you sir! keep making these very informational videos.

Thank you for this video, I am trying to make bigger window sills in my house, and everything else I've been finding is all about putting temporary boards in, or hanging something in front of the window. I wanted a good, well thought out video of exactly how to remove and replace the window sill, and this is it!

Thanks for the video. Amazing job! As soon as you said a dog did that, I knew it was a pit. LOL There's a way to prevent him from doing that again. Works for adult chewers, and puppies before they ever develop a chewing habit. The bitter apple or stop chewing spray doesn't work as directed, but if you cut a strip off an old towel (about 2" x 12",) tie a knot in the center in the center, then saturate the knot with the spray, put it in his mouth with the sides hanging out on each side, then close his mouth on the knot for 15-30 seconds or as long as he can take it, the spray becomes VERY effective. Do this a few times within a few hours. Usually by the 3rd time, they're so disgusted with the taste, they won't open their mouth for anything. NOW, anything you spray he'll avoid like the plague. Wouldn't hurt to leave a reminder piece of cloth that's been sprayed on the sill for a few weeks. Dogs with anxiety issues are usually extremely intelligent and should only have to do this for one session. Some dogs need reminders. People may think this is cruel, but it's better than wood splinters and cheaper than continually replacing damaged items. It's the only method I've found which successfully overrides anxiety, and has saved many dogs I've trained from being rehomed. Helps to also have things he can chew on laying all over the house that he only gets when you leave the house. Take care, and thanks again for the upload. ;-)

Thanks for the great advice. We have tried bitter apple with no results. I’ll share your method with my daughter. You are right about him being intelligent. He’s extremely trainable but when he gets anxious, that overrides everything. We are concerned about what he will do after the corona shut down is over. He’s gotten used to having my daughter home. She is the one that he’s really bonded with. Thanks again! He went to have som dental work done and there was indeed a large splinter caught between his teeth.
@adm6785
@adm6785 4 жыл бұрын
Rmarvids Ouch! I bet that splinter hurt. I actually trained a dog not to chase tires using that method. He’ll be fine if she’s not anxious leaving him and somebody’s home with him. Maybe she can leave for 5 min at first, then a little longer to see what he’ll do. Just make sure she doesn’t come back in the house until he’s settled down. If he’s ever left alone, I’d crate train him ASAP or you’ll be making a lot of repair videos in the near future. 😂 sometimes getting a toy you pretend to love and play with in front of him but never let him have until the day she leaves works well to distract him for awhile. He can smell it but never touch until she leaves. He’ll really think he’s gotten away with something lol. If he’s mad at her for leaving, he’ll take it out on the toy.....or at least that’s what’s supposed to happen. Lol. Hide the toy from him until the next time she leaves. Seriously though, you’d be shocked how well dogs do when you just expect them to. Good luck! He’s a really nice looking dog.

How do you get them to not dig a hole in the wall? They ate my window sills and dug a hole in my wall
@adm6785
@adm6785 4 жыл бұрын
@@mypplrock Are they young? Are they getting enough exercise? If so, sometimes dogs who like to eat drywall have a condition called Pica. Usually means a vitamin deficiency. Specifically zinc. If they were my dogs, I'd get a good vitamin made for dogs. I use a brand that makes a gravy. Make sure your dogs get lots of exercise before leaving them alone, and crate train them. I use to hate the idea of crate training, but have found it to be one of the best training tools available. Make it enjoyable. put their food bowls in there so they get used to going in and out. Have toys they love that they're only allowed to have when they're in the crate. I'm sure there's lots of YT videos on how to crate train successfully. Never use it as a punishment. Sounds like a lot of work, but it only takes 3 days for them to get used to a crate if you do it right. You can also make a dirt pile in your yard with hidden treats and toys that'll keep them busy with digging. Usually that stops them from doing it in the house. Hope you don't give up on them. It' s one of the easier issues to fix if you're willing to put in the time.

Thank you for the thoughtful comment and subbing. The dog actually chewed on the sill again. So I fixed it again and built a toy box / window seat to put in front of it. I did a video about making the toy box as well. I didn’t stain or paint the box as I knew the dog would jump on it. He does but at least he’s not trying to eat it!

Sorry hit the reply button too soon. One question -- You talk about 2 coats of trim paint but I am wondering if you had to do another coat after you caulked the edges. The caulk seems to have blended very well with the painted surface. Every time I have tried to caulk in similar projects my unstable hand seems to mess it up.... I have tried using a blue tape before caulking but it leaves an edge after pulling it out the tape. And off course the pendant in me does not like it... 🙂

Nice video, having issues inside the house with the underneath part of the window sill trim air is leaking in from the outside. Should i caulk the underside of the window seal trim and paint over it to try to make it look like the rest of the house, or is an issue with the trim and the trim needs to be fixed to seal better with the wall?

There was no evidence left after I had to do it a second time either! I finally built a toy box / window seat to put in front of the window. (I have a video out there on that project as well.). I didn’t finish the box with paint or stain so I don’t care how much he scratches it up. He doesn’t chew on the box and can’t get to the sill anymore. I told my daughter that a bullet is a lot cheaper that the repairs! Kidding. He’s my buddy and spends a lot of time at my side when we visit there. Thanks for the comment!

I'm trying to see if I can take my sill off completely without damaging it. I need to see if there is mold behind it. If not, I can put it back on. If it's not too bad, I can treat it and put it back on. What are the tools I should make sure and get so I can pull it off cleanly without damaging it?
@Ray_Here

Sorry for the late response. Get a small nail puller. Looks like a small flat crowbar. If there is any caulking Alice through it first with a razor knife. Same for any areas that look like the paint will chip where it joins other window trim. Be careful. If you go too fast, the razor might slip and damage other areas (or body parts). It’s hard to say beyond that without seeing it. On the trim paint question, I use a high end Sherwin Williams paint. It’s expensive but it works great. You can actually take the old sill in and that can match the color pretty closely so it matches the rest of the trim in the room. Let me know, if you have other questions. Good luck! Oh... you may have to tap the nail puller a bit with a hammer to get started. Use the flat end of the puller first.
