As a curtainmaker of long-standing experience, I wish that all interior designers were as knowledgeable as you! The only thing I was slightly confused about was your reference to blackout lining being washable? Most high end window treatments (however they are lined or not) are definitely not washable, and should be spot cleaned only if absolutely necessary. I advise my clients to vacuum very gently using a brush attachment with a piece of muslin between it and the fabric. The other thing about blackout lining is that it definitely affects the drape of curtains, even when they are also interlined. I was pleased to hear Sophie talking about the specialist blinds available for blackout, as they are the only practical choice if a very dark room is needed. The light bleed from ordinary blackout blinds can actually appear worse in daylight than standard blinds, which deaden glare and generally diffuse light. Another privacy option which I sometimes use is a fabric Roman blind within the window recess with hand pleated sheer curtains on a pole outside it - useful if you need to undress during the day, as you can close the sheer curtain and retain the light.

Sophie is my new fav designer, love the elegance she brings to her work. As a former curtain maker, could you please share which kind of fabric to use for a general lining? Sophie mentioned a viscose linen blend for the clean linen curtains. And I’m assuming everything needs to be prewashed before stitching right?

I find nowadays that nearly all fabric houses are making their fabrics machine washable, even if it’s just a cold wash. It seems to have become a thing in the last few years. 😊

The minute I saw the inverted pleat I thought of my school skirt so it made me laugh when Brett compared it to the headmistress' dress. I don't know if the term is different for clothing, or if I've been wrong all this time, but I knew that as a box pleat. Great tips Brett thank you so much. I've been in my current home for almost 4 years and have been stumped by my windows. I don't have anyone looking in to me and have a cracking view, from the front, so I don't want to do anything to block either the view or the light. I've been at a loss but now I'm brimming with ideas! Thanks to you. And Sophie, thank you for sharing him with us. It really is appreciated

Thank you, you're all wonderful, and yes a Part Two covering that kitchen 🙂. I'd like to add a couple of thoughts: - When you accustom your children to sleeping with blackout curtains, you reduce their adaptability to other light conditions, something you may regret if they accompany you places when they're young enough to need naps. Ask me how I know. - If you don't have sheers on your windows, nice to ensure your linings all match - Perhaps in a follow up talk about weighted hems? Less expensive than a staff member ;-) - Also in a follow up, calculating stackback allowances? Finally, a question: how would you handle privacy concerns with street-level casement windows which open to the inside?
