You're a lifesaver. I didn't realize it but I hosed my computer a few months back when I accidently did a recursive takeown on C:\ProgramData. Everything ran fine until I tried to update a program I needed for work and killed the program without ability to uninstall/reinstall, until I did icacls reset. Saved me a full Windows reinstall. Same here. Accidentally set myself as owner of everything in C:\Windows\System32. Ran the icacls reset command & it "successfully processed 18,934 files" & failed processing 11 files (which upon inspection I found those 11 were all still set to TrustedInstaller as the owner for some reason, but don't see an issue with that). But then when I go recheck System32 & the files/folders in it, they still all show with my account as the owner instead of TrustedInstaller & others. Thoughts?

I just installed a new program (similar to Notepad) but it cannot open a simple text file due to a permission error. Notepad can open it so I assume it's not the text file in error but the program itself?! If I use iCalc will it screw up my other programs or files?
@Windows10NinjaWorld4 жыл бұрын
As it is the program and not actually the file itself. I would not change permissions. Contact the manufacturer of the program.
@danbromberg4 жыл бұрын
@@Windows10NinjaWorld I did contact the vendor but they are unresponsive. I did the iCalc reset exactly as your video outlined (by navigating through (admin) Powershell to the directory containing the program and its associated files). The Powershell commands successfully executed, however, nothing changed; i.e., the program starts, and even though it created the text file I want to edit, it still has no permission to do so.

Using this on a steam game .exe (Rising Storm 2). That file for some reason wont so much as let me view the owner of it, and cmd or this cannot seem to touch it despite doing what you did here. Fails to process.
@Windows10NinjaWorld7 жыл бұрын
Are you viewing permissions on your steam.exe or on the game's .exe? My guess Steam is the program starter .exe and under such other games run. In such there may not be individual program .exe. So, you will have difficulty to do such.

I was looking at the .exe file itself within the steam games library folder. But, I resolved the problem by uninstalling McAfee which is standard with windows 10.

I tried this in desperation on a CD/DVD drive as admin but it still returned access denied. Its a doozy of a problem because the drive will no allow any access to the drive. Virus scanners and even the burner software can still record onto media but I simply cannot access it . Also the access control editor (Properties>security tab) will return "Can't open access control editor, unable to perform a security operation on an object that has no associated security" I can access drives on dual booting to other OS or booting Win 10 in safe mode. Ive also tried removing startup and NON system items on boot but that hasn't helped. The device is definitely there and working but I just cannot access it . I've just realised I can log into that drive through CMD in admin mode even though I'm and admin user by default. Anyone with the knowledge welcome to echo back on this one.
@Windows10NinjaWorld7 жыл бұрын
trying to modify on a cd/dvd is different as they are considered permanent. you would need to change permissions on files/folders before writing to disk. You could copy the entire disk to a folder and then modify permissions and then write all those files to a new cd/dvd etc.
@TechnoTempleStudios7 жыл бұрын
Windows Ninja, howdy yeah. I know, it's a similar situation but on a hardware device. In my case I have no read permission through the GUI. Something in my profile is broken. I can't find the source of the problem.
@Windows10NinjaWorld7 жыл бұрын
Are you saying that any openable file e.g. an image file on the cd/dvd cannot be opened on your computer by double clicking on it? What error message are you getting? Is it the same for all CD/DVDs? If yes, then you are saying access to your drive is disabled - correct? If it is another type of permission issue:Can you change the permissions on any other file on your hard disk or a usb memory stick/drive e.g. create a new Word document and try changing permissions on that? That would really indicate if "something is broken". Have you see some of our newer or other videos on permissions e.g.: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6fWmoGfqt11hqc or kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIWqhGaaZs6Ng9k We do have a few more... If you cannot modify the permissions on your word document new file then you might consider a repair install - easy and usually resets all back to normal and keeps programs and data with a versifier to confirm such will be retained: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGrSgZaAoZqLl6s Let me know how it goes!
@Windows10NinjaWorld7 жыл бұрын
Please see this video that I created to solve this issue: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHuVXoxqhblnrtU I have just read your post again and you are saying with CMD in admin you can access the drive but using the GUI File Exlporer you are getting a long 1 line error saying access denied at the very start of trying to open the drive itself etc... Correct? OK - for this I would ask a few questions: 1. Are you the only user of the computer or is it a corporate computer - could be a group policy issue regarding access to CD/DVD drives So the issue is running File Explorer as Admin. A few options (assuming you are the sole owner of the computer) 1. Run regedit as admin. 2. FInd HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID\{CDCBCFCA-3CDC-436f-A4E2-0E02075250C2} 3. Right Click on the CDC...and click export and save as any name - this if for backup to restore. 4. Right click again, click on permissions. Using one of my videos change the Owner from trusted installer to Administrator (if you are admin you could use your name instead). Then in the middle permissions box add your username and give full permissions. 5. You should see on the right the sbukey nammed RunAs - delete that. 6. Open cmd as Admin and paste: taskkill /im explorer.exe and Enter 7. In cmd paste: explorer.exe this should now run File Explorer as Admin and you should be able to use it like you are able to in CMD to view your CD/DVD drive This should solve the problem! However this is a fix - I would suggest my repair install in my previous comment. To restore the registry just double click on the reg file you saved and run it!

Windows Ninja howdy again, just got wind of your replies and many thanks for your interest. 1. My PC is a single user account as an administrator. 2. As you understand correctly in that I can't log into any DVD, regardless of connection method. It'll return a message like no permissions to read access device if you double click on the object. 3. I can control permissions /ownership of stuff on other drives etc. 4. Certain software like burners or antivirus will have access to the optical drive. 5. The optical drive has no ownership but I can't take ownership as I'm denied access to change ownership Anyhow, I'll try out all those nuggets of knowledge asap! Thanks again :)
