Windows 11 will require a Trusted Platform Module 2.0 (TPM 2.0) chip in order to install. In this video, I'll explain what TPM is, why it's necessary, and how you can enable it on your PC.
--
Hey, thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this video, please SUBSCRIBE to HandyAndy Tech Tips for more Windows 11 tips!
--
TPM is a way of storing and generating encryption keys in hardware, which is safer than using a software approach because it is harder for malicious software to access. To make their OS more secure, Microsoft has decided to require this functionality on all Windows 11 PCs.
You can tell whether your computer has TPM by opening the Run box and typing “tpm.msc”. If it says that the TPM is ready for use, and the specification version is listed as 2.0, then you’re good!
On the other hand, it might say that a compatible TPM cannot be found. But don’t worry - you might be able to enable TPM functionality on your system, and here’s how.
If your PC was built after the mid-2010s, there’s a good chance that it has TPM functionality, regardless of whether it has a dedicated chip. This is because many CPUs actually include TPM in their firmware! Intel’s trade name for this technique is “Platform Trust Technology”, or PTT, and they started including it with some of their 4th generation Haswell processors in 2013. Most AMD Ryzen chips also include so-called “fTPM” technology.
You can enable these technologies in your BIOS - and in the video, I'll show you how.

This was really helpful in helping me understand what a TPM was and why Windows wants to require it for Windows 11, as Mac has always been ahead of them on device security, but sadly even though my PC was built in early 2021, it does not have a TPM enabled nor even installed. At least my laptop has Windows 11 now, so I'm not completely upset about it.

Hey Andy, you sure are handy! I just learned about TPM when I tested my system to see if it could run Windows 11. All of my components were made after 2018 so I expected the system to be capable of running W11. When I tested it, I got the TPM could not be found message. I was able to enable the fTPM option on my AMD Ryzen processor in the BIOS. I feel like a lot of windows users won't have the technical knowledge or understanding to be able to make a change to their BIOS to enable the TPM feature. A lot of people will be disappointed thinking that they will have to make hardware upgrades to upgrade to the new OS. I know MS is concerned about safety but they should make more of an effort to explain the TPM requirement.

Thanks for the quick easy guide! Though for some reason my keyboard stopped working after the change. But pulling out the USB and reinserting it fixed it somehow.
