When I booted my PC the keyboard LEDs would flash up for about a second and then turn off. All I did was hit f7 in this second...and then it just booted up and they were working fine...weird

Thank you for this. This PC is a new build and I guess the smart auto XHCI was selected by default. The mouse and kb would die just as the PC was about to finish booting. I reinstalled 4 times thinking I had some dodgy software. This has fixed it.

Thanks mate, this worked for me straight away! I got this issue after the most recent Windows 10 update. It's mad that this has been an issue since Windows 8. For those with questions: When you start up your PC press/mash F2 or delete to go to your BIOS. They all look a bit different, but then look for USB Configuration and set intel xhci to disabled

I'm having the same problem as you after installing windows 8.1. It restarted 2-3 times after updating, and now my mouse isn't working. HOWEVER, it is not a USB mouse. Just the trackpad on my laptop. I turned off legacy on my pc and then I couldnt even use the usb keyboard in BIOS :/ . had to borrow a PS/2 keyboard and then enable legacy drivers and then it randomly started working...hope they fix this wn 8.1 bug.

Hello mate, i have a Question. Maybe you can help me. I just got an Presonus Audiobox usb. im running on windows 8.1 my usb mouse and keyboard both work. but when i plug the audiobox in it says windows cant regonize the device. error code 43. on the manufactor webpage under driver release notes it say Some Windows PC USB 3.0 ports not compatible with AudioBox family. So my question is can i do something to get the usb to regonize it?

unreal - i just upgraded my bios i am running an ASUS SABERTOOTH Z87 - to BIOS version 1901 running windows 8.1. After the update I encountered the exact same issue you are having - your solution fixed it. As I understand xHCI mode has something to do with the USB 3.0 controller - not really sure but it kinda sux that it happened in the first place! Anyway thanks for sharing dude!! :D

Hello! So I have this problem with my hp laptop. Everything turns on fine I can type in my password and login fine... but when I get to my desktop the icons on the bottom bar won't show up and my touchpad mouse AND keyboard stops working. Agree with JoeEnigma. I was lost. I didn't get any error messages, however, so I didn't know that the keyboard would work at all. After seeing your video, I pressed del during startup and got to BIOS, where the keyboard would work.

For people like me who cant use keyboard at all, PRESS AND HOLD THE POWER BUTTON. When pc shuts off, unplug it. Plug it back in quickly and hold the delete key on ur keyboard it should enter bios

To enter Bios it´s for most models different. Some have to press F1, some F2 some F9 some even ctrl + alt + del at the start of windows. On older models (when i went to school) we always had F2 to enter Bios

Thanks for the video, I'm not running on an asus mb and my mb had legacy usb settings "enabled" so I disabled then reenabled. After saving the bios settings it seems to have fixed it. Wouldn't have thought to look in bios without ur help. Would love to know what causes it though as I've been using windows 8.1 on my machine since it came out.

Step 1. Open up this location: Control Panel \ Hardware and Sound \ Devices and Printers. Step 2. Now right click on "Microsoft Wireless Transceiver" and hit "Properties". Step 3. Click on the "Hardware" tab, click on the driver and hit "Properties" down in the left corner. Step 4. Click on the "Hardware" tab and click on "Change Settings" down in the right corner. Now click on the "Driver" tab and then on "Update Driver Software...". Step 5. Now the fun part. I do not know how this was in Windows 7 (maybe the same?), but in Windows 8 you will do it like this. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software" and then on "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer". Step 6. Now click on the driver "USB Composite Device" NOT on the "Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 700 v2.0". And click continue. Final Step 7. If the keyboard is working correctly, then do Step 6 again just that you now update your "USB Composite Device" driver to the "Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 700 v2.0" driver

ive found out what it was,turned out my mouse was having some kind of power problems off and on. the odd thing was windows didnt give me an error for the longest time, then finally it poped up with power surge error in the port one day, and i was like yep that its... the thing that sucked is i had to pay more money for the same(ish) razar naga but this time it didnt match my pc light color(they only sell green now i guess...) so that kinda added insult to injury. nothing like spending more money for something you want less. but its seems all good now. so thanks you guys for trying to help me :P

I tired your solution but nothing is different I'm running a desktop @ windows 8.1 and when I boot it up the mouse and keyboard lights up and works in BIOS and f8 but like the same problem you have and on the log in screen the mouse and keyboard doesn't respond at all I tired all the modes in the ASUS BIOS on the USB configuration in some modes my keyboard and mouse lights up doesn't work at all. Yes I also changed and tried all the usb 3.0 and 2.0 ports on my computer even the Ethernet cable is to recognized. That night I uninstalled an apple driver cause it wasn't working but then when I shut off my PC then turn it back on I encountered this problem and Now I'm stuck on the windows 8.1 log in screen and cannot use my mouse and keyboard at all when I'm at this point. Please help.

Thanks Bud, you are a legend. I just upgraded my five year old ANTEC fusion with an ASUS Z87M 16Gb i5 mini ninja blah blah... flies like the wind very happy. Like you, I went for the Win 8.1 upgrade and used the machine and all seemed fine. Went to do my kids homework with her today and two weird changes; i) the splash screen and password seemed to have switched to the same as another PC I have installed 8.1 on on the same network without any intervention from me ii) mouse and Kbd stopped working as soon as win 8.1 boots, although mse/kbd work perfectly in bios. Tried your trick (Just disabled XHCI) left legacy support enabled and mouse/kbd back again. But issue (i) is still unexplained.... It seems to have grabbed the profile of the remote machine without asking me... very worrying if this was my business PC! Cheers dude. great post. Z
