Microsoft have been turning on a setting or getting users to switch on this setting which could cause the downfall of your machine.

To quote Lando Calrissian: “This Deal Is Getting Worse All the Time.” Before I retired, I was doing the security patching for 50000+ workstations every month. Microsoft's patches were a bloody nightmare. We tested them out in our lab environment because you couldn't trust MS to not screw something up every month. It was unusual for them not to break something critical in our production environment. MS quality control makes absolutely sure that no quality whatsoever escapes into the world; they treat it like a biolab quarantine.

Guess it is tradition. When Boeing took over McDonald / Douglas. Los Angeles hid the Novell Servers. At midnight every night it backed up the Los Angeles/Orange M$ servers. Then a M$ virus took the system down. All systems up in less than 24 hours. Bldg 90 never went down. No internet connection. Satellite and MD production? Nope every desk had to be wiped and restored to the last known good state. But all that data was back and running. The next day. 2 days before Seattle and St Louis was back. Sometimes cheaper is not better and wisa worsa. Novell code probably still is secure. As for tech support? I am a usta. The last Macs I worked on were in Seal Beach. I also dropped my M$ and Mac certs. Just other things that I wanted to do. Like going back to working in refinery repair. Always a need for fixing and the tech does not change every 3 years. And it pays better. But it also is dangerous. If you don't know what you are doing. I know like when I was in the Navy. Why would a 220lb, 5'9" ET that could be 1/2 of the shore line and mooring line spool movers do that when he was not tweaking electrons? I get bored. I went back to turning nut and screws. 3/4 inch screws are the little ones. The ones with the 90lb wrenches pay better. Some times, no, make that most of the time. If anybody can do it. You get anybody can do it pay. My EE was not a waste. I just don't like sitting at desk and or a console.

I have Win 10 Pro 64-bit on my computers. I have that particular setting, "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available" turned off, and it's been off since I installed Win 10. Even though my computers (supposedly) can run Win 11, I have the forced update to it blocked in the Local Group Policy, so nothing past Win 10 Pro 22H2 can be installed. In all of my 30+ years in IT, I've NEVER rushed to get the latest version, I've always waited until it had been out a while. Example: I didn't make the switch from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Pro until Service Pack 4 was available and proven to not have any major bugs. I started way back with MS-DOS 4.01, then to MS-DOS 6.22, Win 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, NT 4 Workstation, Win 2000, Win XP Pro SP-4, and Win 10 Pro on my own machines, though I've had to work with PCs and laptops running MS-DOS 1.0 to Win 95, Win 98, Win 98 SE, Vista, Win Me, Win 7, and Win 8, and servers running Win NT Server, Win 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003, 2008, and up to present.

Currently, I'm using windows because I've not gotten the nerve to switch wholesale yet. But, I have a PC set up and ready to go with Mint, that I've already customized, and added most of my programs to. Once I get the nerve, or this PC finally bites it, I'm swapping over. Genuinely, linux is the best option. Maybe not from a professional standpoint (I can't run ACAD on linux), but from a user freedom perspective, it is.

@@DougguoD Mint, the distro I am switching to, does have a lot of GUI elements, and I will say is much easier to use than older linux impressions, at least in my case. I actually feel like it's easier to use than Windows, in some cases. These have likely extended to other distros as well, so you may find similar experiences on something like Ubuntu, I've just not checked. External drives mount automatically (as in thumbdrives will just show up, no need to do some crazy command line to mount it). And if you are OK using Open Source software, then getting programs from a package manager is more like an app-store on your phone than manually installing things (but you still can install via tarball or other methods if the program isn't on a repo.). I do suggest always searching the program in question, because Flatpak versions of software are getting updated, but massively older versions of that software are still available as non-Flatpak distributions, and the Flatpak versions don't often get recommended when you open your package manager. However, all that other complex stuff is still there, for when the more streamlined user experience isn't applicable, such as compiling programs locally. Settings files for your system are also still mostly in text format, rather than GUIs, which I admit is still confusing if you don't know what you are doing. Regardless of the GUI stuff tho, I do suggest learning the Command Line stuff, just so you have it in your back pocket. I've used small parts of it in Windows stuff, because I use GCC and Pandoc on Windows, which both work on the command line.

Heheh... Been running on Win7 since XP was abandoned. Never downgraded to 8x/10/11, and have no intentions of doing so. Within a year, I'll have my own network up and running and will only use a Linux box for Internet. At that time, my network will have everything I need to keep things alive and still be quite productive. Plus, I have 3 machines each with multiple OSs on them, more or less maxed out (removable media, RAID arrays, software suites, etc). But the OS collections began at DOS 3.3/Win2.11 and stopped at Win7. Not going any higher. After Win7 the level of spyware became unbearable. And now, "Oh, look! Spying is now a FEATURE! YAY!" I'm not a fan of Linux, but for internet browsing, it should be fine. I'll keep my valuables offline from now on, thankyouverymuch. heh

That's what's hard man, I don't suppose any casual users would want to bother doing as much. I myself just have no time to learn the ins and outs of Linux and also any alternative FOSS stuff for what I use right now although I am starting to just for that reason because of my concerns. Like I did try to convert my old laptop OS to Linux because of the benefits of taking up less resources so as to speed it up but my family who are the ones using it just couldn't _get_ it and they simply didn't have the time to as well and asked me to turn it back to Windows 7. For the past 6 months due to work I’ve been mostly using Linux (pop os) as my daily driver and once a week I was booting into windows to play some star citizen. After recent “feature update” my windows decided not to boot again (I hear the sound that it’s booted into system however the screen shows motherboard logo and spinning circle), I didn’t even bother fixing it and booted back into my Linux partition. Personally I think Linux will cover 90% of any pc user daily tasks. It’s just not worth my time to constantly roll drivers tweak registry and pray that I’ll be able to boot my system tomorrow. On every system I had, either prebuilt or the once that I built myself I always at some point had something happening with windows that forced me to completely reinstall it.

I have had this feature break my Windows 11 system more than once. You are basically volunteering to be a beta tester without being an Insider. It's not as bleeding edge new as Insider is but it's an intermediary pre-production release. In the corporate world we control when the updates are applied. We test them on IT volunteers who run through a test plan a week prior or a day or two before we deploy an emergency update to fix a critical vulnerability. As mentioned, Microsoft have frequently released updates only to have to pull them because they broke many thousand PC's. Then re-release a week or two later with it fixed. Apple is guilty of this as well. It even happens with Linux. You might expect this from a rolling release like Arch. But Just the other day, my normally robust Ubuntu Server LTS 20.04 broke my LXD containers after a seemingly small update. I ended up needing to upgrade to LTS 22.04 to resolve the problem. Luckily that worked. Otherwise I would have been restoring from backups.

Gina be real honest here: anyone who is older than a toddler knows to save early and often. And only a complete cretin would get up from their machine even to walk across the room to the coffee machine without saving, let alone go to lunch. So NO Sympathy for anyone who loses work because they didn't save. Only two types of people, those who've lost data and those who are going to lose data.

It doesn't have to be a document that's not saved for a while. Imagine playing an MMORPG while having updates turned on. I had this happen to me on my Win7 machine about 13 years ago. It took me an hour to find 6 people in the game to run a dungeon and this specific dungeon can only be run twice a week so pretty damn annoying if something happens, which it did. Once inside that dungeon and me being the healer of the entire group, Windows suddenly shut down my game without even asking to install updates and reboot several times since this was the first time the updater ran on that pc. This took over an hour and everyone's dungeon run was messed up due to this. I've turned off updates completely (not even setting them to manual) and my pc was still fine after 13 years without any updates. No security updates, no driver updates, nothing. So I don't really see a benefit in those forced updates. I keep em turned off any way I can. Win11 turns them back on behind your back but I now set my LAN connection as "metered" so the updater thinks I have to pay for every megabyte downloaded and it won't download anything now. :p

That is some sort of benefit risk evaluation. If you switch off automatic updates when they are available, you get a security gap. To receive security updates as soon as possible, you want to have that switched on.

That switch is a little confusing but the emphasis is that turning this off will not affect security; this switch applies only to feature and non-security updates so another words the kind of updates that are most likely to cause problems with production software and hardware. Providing you don't pause windows update this switch will not prevent security updates from downloading and actually you can't disable these even if you wanted to.

I ran Win7 for 13 years with ALL updates turned off completely since day 1 and never had security issues. I did have a separate virusscanner install along with a firewall and never saw any hints about being invaded by a hacker or whatever. So on my Win11 pc now, I also have updates turned off along with my LAN connection being set to "metered" to prevent Windows from re-enabling updates behind my back and installing them anyways.

All these were already off but I've disabled Windows Updates in as many ways as I've been able to find. I'm not worried about viruses as I have my own protection and my software works perfectly well for me as-is, so I see not point in changing, just like my main desktop which has Windows 7 installed - it all works, I never bother updating any of the software after they re no longer supported. I find it disgusting to be honest that Microsoft basically forces updates, no longer is there an option to stop updates or even worse to choose which ones it finds one want's too install.

you can set your connection as "metered", which blocks the updater from running as it thinks you have to pay per megabyte downloaded while you may have broadband like most of us. Now my Win11 machine lists there are updates but won't even download them. And I won't install them either as I didn't even have issues while running Win7 for 13 years with updates turned off. So I don't really get what those pesky updates are all about. For a simple gaming pc, you're most likely never a target for a hacker so those security updates have very little effect.

that settings doesn't exist in enterprise versions that slider wont do anything windows deploys updated to regions y always install updates a soon as possible with no restart parameter updates don't break things pcs are already broken before the update arrives and most crashed are repeated to broken drivers check the hardware is is windows 11 compliant before you buy but that is also not verry reliant since direr devs to cover more ground the say app X is supported from win 7 til 11 but that is a joke that means some drivers will work in backwards compatibility mode there is the issue not windows

Ida know man. With the way things are going with state actors with entire warehouses full of kids whose job is to digitally bugger you... If there is some kind of security dealio I want it. And I am guessing this is why it's turned on by default. I am not under any illusions that should tensions escalate thousands and thousands of PCs will become unusable no matter what but every little bit helps. So I guess this is what you would call a 'sh*& sandwich' You can either suck up any bugs MS has by being tagged as an early adopter or you can take your chances when and if China moves on the islands.

So in other words, I can keep using my 10 until its end of life in a few years, and by that time I need to learn how to use Linux as Windows essentially destroyed itself and is currently in the process of beating the left over pieces with a hammer. Why are all big company's these years destroying their company's? there is no way they are all this incompetent right?
