Windows Vista on a modern PC part 1: Installation and simple use

To start off 2022, I'm going to try maining Windows Vista. For one month. On my main, modern PC.
ISO I made drive.google.c... (included extended kernel and last version of IE for Windows Vista, skips "Completing Installation")
GTX 1050ti driver for Windows Vista (should work for any other GTX 10 Series) Credits to Osman Kovan on the MSFN forums drive.google.c...

I'm the guy who patched this driver. On 2:32 , earliest driver version for GTX 1050 Ti was wrong. It's around 375.xx. I choose 391.35 version because this version was latest driver version for 32-bit architecture.

@@velhodofatopt1366 Yup, I also patched it with the same way I patched the 64-bit one, but I didn't tested it. But it should work as good as like 64-bit one. Just be sure to install every prerequisites.

But you must download 372.70 driver specific for your architecture of your OS, extract package with archive software (7-Zip etc.) and copy files and folders inside that patch I prepared to full driver package where you extracted previously. And you must use 32-bit driver for 32-bit OS and same for 64-bit.

from now with extended kernel updates you can install nvidia driver version 398, and there you go - much better performance, i tested on gtx 1080 ti.

how do you activate this ISO? It boots and works mostly fine on my coffee lake rig (8700k+msi z370) but there should be theoritically some problems related to the timer on haswell and newer (critical services sometimes not even starting, errors on startup, etc). I'm actually facing almost none of them, but there are some which I can't figure out if they are related to the above timer issue or just the fact that the installation isn't activated (eg wallpaper resetting to black every boot and sometimes aero reverting to basic) I tried good ol windows loader 2.2 but despite it saying "success" the system still wasnt activated.

i tried installing windows vista (extended kernel) on a 2012 laptop with 2 partitions as I have windows 10 installed but the installer wont detect all my SSD partitions as primary and said unable to locate valid drive to store temporarily files. MBR scheme wont install too cuz it cant install on gpt partition and theres no option for me to change the boot menu (legacy/UEFI), need help

If you can't change the boot menu, it is likely that you have a legacy, BIOS-only machine. In this case, you need to use the command prompt to change your drive type. NOTE: THIS WILL WIPE ALL OF YOUR DATA. After opening the command prompt in the Windows installer (I usually start the installer, and press shift+f10), run diskpart. Then in diskpart, run "list disk", to check which disk you want to convert. It would probably be Disk 0 if your PC only has one drive. When you confirm the Disk number, type select Disk X (replace X with the disk number you want). Then, type convert mbr. Once this is done, you can exit the command prompt, and should be able to install Windows Vista

@@mhkhing444 When it says GPT or MBR, it's talking about the partiion table, the way that all the partitions on the drive are partitioned. Since this is the case, you cannot just change the partition table of just one partition, it has to be the whole disk

I used to use NTLite, but that apparently stopped working as of recently, so I'd reccomend uding VLite, although it can be buggy sometimes

Great video and installed Windows Vista on my ASRock Z790 PG Sonic Motherboard with a 12th Gen Intel Core CPU and I did not get any BSODs and ACPI Issues during the Installation since I have CSM Enabled!!! I also have a PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard port to PCI Express adapter so I can have the ability to install earlier versions of Windows than 8.1!!!

I have not tested anything with NVMe, since I don't have an NVMe drive. I know that Windows Vista has a lack of support for TRIM, which to be honest I don't know much about. In a few months, I might be able to get an NVME ssd, so I'll try to make a video then.

So I tried to get this running on my PC- and the installation actually did finish, but when it came time to actually log in, nothing worked. Would this be a problem with the drivers that I used for USB 3.0, or something else?

It is likely that it's a USB issue, if anything in your USB ports doesn't work. Maybe, if you have an old PS/2 mouse lying around, you can use that. and see if it works. If it does, then use it to install USB 3 drivers from online

During the X570S installation process, the keyboard and mouse USB are not recognized, so the installation cannot proceed... I checked both front and rear.

you need to download USB drivers for your motherboard for Windows 7 (I was lucky, since thew were on my motherboard's website), and integrate the drivers to both the boot.wim and install.wim using NTlite. If that doesn't work, you might need to use a PS/2 mouse during the installer

There's a setting in the BIOS which lets you change your drives to be ACPI compliant, switch that on

@@nttechidk Unless you are actually willing to install Windows Vista in UEFI, which is pretty difficult, then don't boot in UEFI mode, boot in legacy. Also, I remeber that a error along those lines shows if your CPU is Intel Haswell or newer. I don't have much experience with Intel processors past Ivy Bridge, but you should be able to look online for solutions

I haven't got an Intel PC to test this, but it might work. The 1060 will definitely work, but the CPU will be harder, since from 4th gen Intel, the installer will BSoD. Ig you use my ISO, that might bypass it, but I had only tested it on Ryzen PCs

I'm not sure about the GT 1030. Just try installing it with what I linked, and if it works, I guess it works. I am starting to get back into this sort of thing, so if I have the time, I'll see if I can modify the GT 1030 driver to work on Vista if what I linked doesn't work

On my pc everything works fine with Nvidia 9500 GT all drivers and people say it is soo bad it doesn't support drivers

The reason why people say that Windows Vista is bad is because the people who have installed it, didn't read the system requirements. Windows Vista needed more than double the specs than Windows XP and another major problem was Driver Issues, which isn't Microsoft's problem but the manufacturer's. The naming scheme and advertisement was confusing also. Microsoft made a survey (Windows Mojave). It was made to survey people who had a negative opinion about Vista, never used it and stuck with XP. It turned out that 90% actually liked it and then Microsoft revealed that it was a normal copy of Vista. Michael MJD made a great video on it on his 15th Anniversary of Vista (that's were I got the information).
