It only felt appropriate to make this week's video about Windows Vista, since today marks the official end of support for the OS. This video takes a step back to examine Windows Vista, from how it came to be, to it's ultimate fate. If you're still using Windows Vista, you will no longer receive security patches and updates from Microsoft, making you more vulnerable to viruses and malware.

Vista was completely amazing. Most of the backlash was from people upgrading their shitty 512mb/1gb of ram PCs to a newer flashy OS with all the bells and whistles enabled and expected it to scream... I made so much money those days doing pc cleanup, optimization and maintenance which 95% of the times was just disabling Aero and window shadows and removing bloatware from prebuilt pcs and laptops, which was much worse at the time. I mean, it was mostly the same, but people had less ram and less powerful cpus and less screen space, so the performance/bloat impact was much worse. The other problem was that it actually FIXED lots of long standing problems with Windows XP. Which were a LOT of problems. Lots and lots of software had to use workaround for those problems and lack of functionality on XP. Basicly, fixing the OS meant breaking a lot of software. The last major problem was people expecting the same 2000-2004 hardware they were using to work on Vista. Vista required new drivers, and if the manufacturer of a piece of hardware didn't deemed it fit to support it after 3 or 3+ years it would not work with Vista. All of that was mostly not Vista's fault. If somehow we had a time machine and released Windows 7 instead of Vista it would had had pretty much the exact same problems. In fact testament to how good Vista was is Windows 7. I mean, the thing is pretty much just Vista SP2, renamed and with a new taskbar and theme.

I had a brand new computer with decent specs and Vista as OS, i remember i installed a customization program in the week i got it and Windows broke. I had to use the recovery dvd (it was the first of numerous times i had to do it). Vista gave me lots of problems, like the taskbar misbehavin', "incompatible'" applications, unstable programs, programs not longer running after a hang, not even if they were reinstalled, etc. and the SP1 made not much of a difference... i went back to XP. Win7 was by far much better, more stable, faster.

This system looks so good compared to Windows Metro. Now that 10 GB or greater SxS directory and several dozen running processes is the norm, there is no solid reason to hate Vista. A radically different file system without familiar paradigms, drive letter, fixed directory tree, etc., would be horrible. The file system and the file manager (other than always changing Explorer) is where one can retreat when confronted with new virtual directories, libraries, cloud, symlinks and so on, until one has time to learn what does are and where files saved to them actually go.

Right now you wouldn't have many problems using SP2, because it's kinda stable, and a lot of modern drivers are compatible, also it looks beautiful, I dare to say that it's Taskbar looks better than Windows 7's However, it's an old system which has a lot of unpatched vulnerabilities, also a lot of software is no longer compatible with it So, I wouldn't use it as main pc, I would try installing it on an old pc for curiosity proposes

Rest in peace Windows Vista. I remember using the operating system on my Toshiba laptop before in-place upgraded it to Windows 7... Now I was a kid back in 2007, I was 10 years old at the time Windows Vista came out in January 2007. I would turn 11 years old in September. But now in 2017, I am 20 years old, turning 21 in September. Wow, time flies by really fast, that's for sure. Anyways, but now, Windows Vista has less than 1% market share at this time, so basically the operating system has been left in the dust, and is hardly being used by anyone. But wow Microsoft, 10 years of support for Windows Vista from 2007 to 2017 from an operating system that did get that much hate, but yet Windows XP got longer support then Windows Vista due to Windows XP's highly loved popularity at the time. From 2001 to 2014...

Ah, Windows Vista.. my childhood. I remember playing on my grandma's Dell Inspiron, downloading a bunch of toolbars and clicking on ads that said "Play Super Mario Bros. I still remember when I used Vista back in the day, but my "Wow" factor was hindered by the large amount of Acer bloatware (especially their "e" toolbar that would never go away) and lack of RAM on that Aspire 5050 I had, though I (at that time) bought a new PC with Vista because I (back in the day) did not know how to do a clean install of WIndows, and I wanted an Aspire 5580 (which was what my sister had) which I couldn't find and the 5050 was all I could afford back then. Even then, I somehow feel that Vista (especially the Ultimate version) just has this "Wow" factor that no other Windows version has. 9:31 Normally, a clean install of Vista would take you to the screen to create your user account, but instead, it goes to that first screen that is normally only shown on OEM installations, except there is no OEM logo under the keyboard layout thing. Weird.

I think a good way to make Vista a more incremental upgrade like they wanted would've been to include the libraries feature in Vista instead of 7, include the revamped layout of Windows explorer and the start menu, add the search function, add 64 bit support (which was one of the big things about Vista), not add Aero Glass until 7 to give computers more time to catch up performance wise and stick with Luna, include the improvements to default program settings and AutoPlay, the new IE and Windows Media Player versions, DirectX 10, and maybe still add the new sound scheme. The Windows Live stuff, the new security features, the new code base, the new desktop graphics engine, Aero, new power management options, all of that could have been pushed back to 7. And Vista would have, in my opinion, been better for it.

I've also never had to worry about viruses with chrome, I've been using it since 2012 and I've always seen it as the superior browser. not everything is there where I need it in edge. Based on NSS lab's testing with smartscreen, edge does block a bit more stuff, but i use malwarebytes and webroot antivirus and if I ever download something bad, they always catch it. It was hardware and software at launch, and you're right, SP1 even made it alot better but SP2 it was like a cut down 7 With hardware, lots of people tried installing it to their old XP machine probably not thinking about how powerful it was and not realizing how light XP was, even in 2005. So with all the overhead and fancy new things the computer just ran slow and that will frustrate anyone. 2nd to that was more hardware issues, like selling Windows Vista computers with less than 1gb of ram. Thx Best Buy. The software goes hand in hand with hardware. 64bit was the buzzword then, it's faster and better and more awesome! and it pretty much is better, but at launch not a lot of software was compatible with 64bit Windows. So for most average users, they just go buy some new computer with the newest shiniest OS and some software they use all the time won't work with it. It didn't take long for that to get fixed but the first impression was here and gone. Vista does get more flak than it deserves in it's state right now but back then it was a different story, and just about the only stories you here now is how it was either alright or terrible.

Why did people hate vista. I loved vista. The only reason I don't use vista is because my drivers are incompatible with vista, and most apps(Notepad++) don't work on vista. But, I still run it in a vm, and I love it. I just need some aero drivers. Michael MJD is the best tech channel ever

Really interesting video. Vista was one version of windows that I never interacted much with. What I've heard though when it comes to windows 7, was Windows 7 is what Vista should have been, or the second common thing said is, Windows 7 is Vista with a service pack. What are your thoughts on this ?
@MichaelMJD
@MichaelMJD 7 жыл бұрын
I personally think that Windows 7 was a major improvement over Vista. A lot of the UI elements were kept the same however, including the Aero theme, so I guess that some people might consider it to be more of a "service pack" upgrade for Vista like you said.

No joke but Windows Vista is Actually My Favorite Operating System and it is nostelgia for me because my first laptop had windows vista and i loved and appriecated the aero theme and features and it just fit in with me and worked for me and it is really confusing how people and the media hate and make rude jokes about and i think that vista needs some respect.

Used Vista from beta to Win 7..it was meant for an audience of power users which MS mistakenly took it's users to be..thinking that the eXPerience acquired from previous versions would be working in its favor. I never had any issues with RTM/SP versions..more of a misunderstood release and bad marketing decisions than a technically bad one to my eyes.

I believe Paul Thurrott made a comment back in the early 2010s was that the problem with Windows Vista is that some of the development and device manufacturers did not update their hardware. Microsoft warned these developers and manufacturers early in 2004 that they had to update their device drivers and software. What damaged Vista's reputation was the January issue of PC World where they essentially also predetermined the operating system's fate.

I liked vista. I still have two machines that run it and I will keep them like that as long as I own them and they still function. I have a dell inspiron 530 that I inherited from my mom. Still has a ton of her music and pics on it. Running vista flawlessly for well over 15 years now. I also have my first laptop, a cheapo acer aspire one. Had it around the time me and my wife got married. I keep it full of our honeymoon pics etc. Every now and then I get them out and power them up when I'm feeling nostalgic.

The first computer I owned came with Vista, its a Dell Inspiron 531s, it worked fine at first on its AMD Athlon 64 X2 at 2.10 GHZ, 1 GB of RAM, and some kind of Nvidia graphics chip, then it got real slow I think due to the dust it was collecting to the point where I was trying to get 1 file off it one time for a game, it probably took me an hour to get it off there because explorer kept not responding, system restore I think helped a little but not much, then I cleaned it some and put 7 on it, then it was a usable computer again, now I'm stuck with 10 on it because my product key decided to quit working after I was trying to reinstall it from where I had to put the hard drive in another computer, it runs 10 fine though, now it's kinda sad to see Vista go, first XP which was I find even sadder since it's the one I knew the name of first, I don't know if I actually used it first but I wouldn't be surprised, I used it a lot then mostly since most of our elementary school computers ran it, but I still use it on one of my computers, and now Vista which was on my first own one, it's like all my early operating systems are going away, I guess 7's next which will just be terrible in a few years since its probably the last one I have a quite a few good memories on, I used it mostly on some elementary school computers, a laptop, and hopefully the school I'm in now we can get beck to our Server 2008 R2 which is like 7 pretty much because I don't care for the Chromebooks they have, then 8 and 10 I don't really care about.

I don't know why people hated it so much all it took was the proper hardware for it to run good I never had any problems with Vista... now with windows 10 I've had so many issues since getting a new computer with it, it glitches and bsods quite a bit and my vista machine never did that

I like Vista a lot. With both service packs installed, as mentioned in the video, it runs really well (almost as well as 7). Personally, I upgraded from XP to Vista as soon as it was released and had no issues with it. What I have found with Vista, and it's a complete mystery why this is, is that on some computers, even without the service packs installed it runs really well, but on other computers it's really buggy and just does not work well until you install the service packs. It's just strange to me that on one computer it would run terribly and on another computer with similar specs it worked really well.
