How to grow live sphagnum?
Well, you can easily grow it inside your house, without greenhouse or growth chamber.
Live sphagnum can be finicky… I tried to grow it many times and it took me a while to understand why my live sphagnum was dying or at least not growing.
But keep in mind that there is more than one way to grow it so don’t hesitate to share how you grow your live sphagnum in the comments below!

I use 2cm of clay balls at the bottom and put sphagnum on top. Not sure why, but that works pretty well. I discovered that even if by mistake you put too much water, and it should drown the sphagnum, the LECA floating capability keeps it at the right level.
@WindowsillNepenthes
@WindowsillNepenthes Жыл бұрын
Did you try leaving the LECA in 0 ppm water for a week and then test the water? Is it leaking minerals or not? I think Sphagnum im less sensitive to minerals than Nepenthes.

@@WindowsillNepenthes Ok, trying to make it short here. a)Wash twice with tap water - b)one more with 0PPM. c)Let in water for one week/change water over 50PPM - d)After 2-3weeks it stops leaking hard, and falls down under 20-25PPM per week - till it becomes less than 30ppm per month ( I prepare that balls seldom and only Bottom pot for CP like Sarracenia - I used also for a Nep, short of material and of a better solution ) For Sphag I stop at c) 1/2days... İ think it's tolerant of minerals in water to some extent but you sould be careful because the water it holds propably has still minerals that the moss didn't use so you can't use this moss with carnivorous plants unless you wash it with distilled water to remove them.

Hi, thank you for the video! So helpful. In your experience, is it possible to recover sphagnum that has turned white? I had some in a mason jar on the window sill and it is losing colour. I moved it out of direct light, and I am going to transfer it to a tray as you suggest. Do you think the tray method would work with a lid, as an alternative to misting several times a day? Do you add any growing medium to the tray before laying down the moss? It looks like you have perlite or something similar in the video. Thanks a bunch!

Once your live sphagnum moss propagations are established in the pots alongside the nepenthes, do you continue spraying multiple times a day? Have you ever tried to revive dried sphagnum moss? Thanks for the video, I hope to grow live sphagnum moss once I get my hands on some!

Usually once topping the pots, I have to continue to spray them once a day as it is dryer on a windowsill. But in a greenhouse/terrarium-like environment, it should be fine with spraying every 2-3 days I think. And for me, I never revived dead sphagnum... I guess it depends of where the sphagnum come from and how old is it.

İ have successfully revived dried sphagnum moss from commercial compressed dried moss (since i can't find fresh sphagnum in my country). But i think it depends on the brand..it needs to not be heat treated. The revival was sporadic (since it's being propably dried for years) but enough so you can cut it and multiply it to make a dense culture

What about the humidity and most important the 'air flow' (or ventilation)? If there is a lack of air circulation (the box is closed with no holes), then yes the algae can come. Try to clean the sphagnum from most algae (in rainwater) and put it in bright and warm place (no direct sun on the box) and make sure you have holes on the top of the box, or maybe the lid isn't totally closed. Let me know how it work in 2 months

Nutrients !!!! Try Fogponics with small quantity of nutrients. Real peat bogs have floating moss on water - they get the nutrients from the water below full of dead and decaying plant and animal matter (the water is full of bacteria). The plants capture insects, but are themselves overtaken by the moss - so the moss gets the nutrients eventually, and the decaying moss provides habitat for new plants to root in. It's symbiosis, so don't grow it in isolation - you need the combination of plants.

It's rainwater but once a week it's distilled water with orchid fertilizer (diluted at 150ppm).

@@alexisdiaz2875 You don't have to, but it will help. Actually, sphagnum moss can take a more fertilizer than carnivorous plants.
