I managed to 'revive' sphagnum moss from the dried stuff. For me it only works with the Besgrow 'Supreme (AAA)' quality moss. Pretty much all of that moss will start te regrow live moss eventually when kept moist. I tried with other quality moss before, and nothing ever happened with it, besides algae growth.

I also had it happen with this brand. I moistened the moss and put it outside in the shade in a container with the lid half off so it would be humid but still get airflow, then I forgot about it other than occasionally checking on it to make sure it didn't dry out. I'd say it took three or four months for me but I did eventually get little pieces of live moss growing on the dead stuff.

What is the stuff you put in the bottom? cheese cloth

I bought a jewel orchid, macodes pedata. I didn't know anything. I planted it in sphagnum moss and put it in a closed terrarium. Both orchid and moss grew. I have to pull out moss or it would take over. I put the moss in another terrarium and have my own grown moss very easily. I do fertilize lightly.

You could lightly fertilizer yes, like for an orchid :)

So I am looking at some options on Amazon for spaghnum moss that is able to ship to Lithuania. The only one I found is dried *i think?* but I just wanted to ask, is dead spaghnum moss still usable as a substrate for Nepenthes or do we have to throw it if it's dead? Thanks!

Sphagnum is good as substrate even if dead because even the dead sphagnum retains the absorbing and fungal resistant properties. It does "sour" after some time and needs to be replaced with fresh, but that's after more than a year, at which point it's good to change the soil for a plant anyway.

Yes dead and dried sphagnum is great for nepenthes. No difference.

No it helps the sphagnum moss to grow... but it also helps algae, so make sure you have good airflow ;)

Not really. As long as you have liquid it's good.

Thank you! I've been specifically looking for information on this and noticed that there isn't a lot of information about HOW the mosses online are dried or prepared. Any suggestions on brands that are simply dried? I've seen videos of people who say the brand SpagMoss worked for them and grew withing just a couple of months but other videos that claim it doesn't work! I'd love any input because I haven't found anywhere that sells still green live sphagnum.

I'm afraid all brands sterile their sphagnum for legal reasons (avoiding spreading bacteria or pests and having the right to sell internationally). I don't know any brand that could have live sphagnum, but local carnivorous plants nurseries or amateur growers can sell you some. What's your country?

Exo Terra dried pressed bricks revived for me, maybe about 10% of the brick, so not much but it spread quickly.

Stupid question but how do we recnognize dead sphagnum from dried sphagnum? I can buy a wood box of sphagnum that is yellow/brown, wet, but the vendor can't tell me if it's dead or not.

For me it's the same... it's more the way it was dried. Heating kills most of the spores, sun doesn't. So you have more chance to get the moss growing back.

Hey I have a question I hope you can help me. So I got this kind of moss that you're talking about but the internet said something about getting an infection from it. Am I going to get an infection what should I know? Please help I'm very nervous about this I don't want anyone to get sick I just want to put it on my bonsai plant

In 20 years, that's the first time I heard that. Every nurseries on the planet use it. If that was dangerous, people wouldn't use it 😉. So it's super safe.

Bro i soaked my dry sphagnum from the petstore for 30min and put my nepthentes from amazon (was in earth) in it. Does the sphagnum need to be alive?? The plant is still alive after a month yet

Dead sphagnum is just great. but make sure it's well drained to avoid suffocating the root of the plant. ;)

If you have some green, it's possible. Give it good light and humidity ;)

Hi iv got a container of live sphagnum in a grow tent its got good drainage and is well watered , i even missed but for some reason the tips keep drying out , cant figure it out has anyone else had this problem ? 🤔

Its also at the bottom of the tent so its not to close to the light ...

Thanks for your reply i think its the breeze from the fan as i have it running the whole time the light is on , apart from that as you say could be to hot
