Seen a few comments now of "why don't they just land the other way." You always want to land into the wind. The lower your groundspeed (actual speed over the ground) the shorter distance you can land in/more screw-up room you have, etc. If your airspeed is 100 knots, and you have a 50 knot headwind, then in reality you're only doing 50 knots over the ground. If you had a 100 knot headwind, you'd be hovering and landing would be a piece of cake (look up short field/STOL landings for a good time...). The funny part of this video is while these landings are a little hairy, there's not much that's "dangerous" about these landings per se. Pilots do it all the time and all the aircraft in the video are capable of landing on that runway in zero wind conditions. The hardest part for most of the pilots here is just convincing the damn airplane to get on the ground. With all the air over the wings the aircraft just want to keep flying.

@operator0 4 жыл бұрын
Also, landing the other way doesn't give you any room to go around. I bet they always land and take off in this direction no matter what the wind does. If it's blowing the wrong direction and it's blowing too fast, they simply don't land. Fortunately, this airport is in the trade-winds and it's oriented so those trade-winds are blowing the correct direction the vast majority of the time.
@andyowens5494
@andyowens5494 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, its dangerous. These pilots make it look less dangerous than it is because every one of them is certified to land there - its not any old pilot thats even allowed to try. It doesn’t take much to go wrong (mechanically, meteorologically, or mentally) to turn any landing there into a fatality. No-one skips pre-flights before a trip to St B’s; you really dont want a problem of any sort on that approach.
@andyowens5494
@andyowens5494 4 жыл бұрын
HangGlideTube Yeah, that works in places like Luckla, but St Barts is not steep enough to slow quickly enough on touchdown. Bit of a difference between a 18 mph stall speed that you can almost run at and a 90 knot one in terms of stopping v crunching :). My one and only upwind hg landing ended up in a collision with a VW beetle; as you say, not for the weekend flyer.

@@operator0 They land on 28 when conditions warrant it, but there are a lot of reasons besides the hill at the west end of the runway that make that the more difficult choice. The traffic circle is about 100' higher than the runway, but it's also the highest land on the approach and you can potentially come straight in from miles away. If you came straight in from the opposite direction your approach would be nearly as steep as the approach to runway 10, but from 3/4 of a mile across the bay at an altitude of 300'. In theory you could have a very flat approach over water from the NE, but the usual approach to 28 comes in over and through the hills to the SE, and commonly starts from the west before making what's essentially a left U-turn. There's a really good video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rn-sin2Nrtlqb9U

I fly it all the time with FSX and the addon from FlyTampa (hands down the best) and I get it right about half the time. It really depends on the plane and the wind. Headwind is actually harder because of the added lift keeps you floating too long. You have to really push the plane into the runway or you'll touch down way too far down and you're doing a go around. Taking off is not bad at all, full power, full flaps and a lot of back pressure

@Despiser Despised Naw, only risking the lives of a dozen or so passengers-totally worth it! ;-} But really, as a pilot, once you fly to commercial standards, it's no big deal, and usually wind dependent. We always turned off at the first taxiway at our home airport when the wind was blowing from the north, 900' from the threshold. Piece of cake, and if you didn't easily make it, you just rolled 1000' and turned off at the next one. No risk involved, just standard short-field technique.

No they were right .... You need a steeper landing curve ... When you're against onward gush of winds on a shorter landing space/ Visibility areas. I flew here in early 1994(?) to do some construction work after a hurricane damaged the islnad. On approach I caught a glimpse of a plane floating upside down in the ocean beyond the runway. Found out later it had been deposited by the hurricane not a botched landing! The pucker factor was high. Later drove my car over that road and realized the pilots were landing at the bottom of a steep hill fighting car traffic and a short runway made me sick to my stomach all over again.
