Seems like most commentators here are either pilots or very-well educated on flight, so you _know_ how hard these approach/landings are. But if you're not a pilot, just look past the aircraft and check out the waves breaking on the shoreline across the bay (0:21, 1:07 for example). THAT will give you a better appreciation for what the wind is doing, and how remarkably good these pros are at what they do, and do it so well. And Sam The Man: _great_ shooting. This wind affected you as much as the pilots. Nice job!

the two turboprops must've felt less scary - more to an added excitement for tourists onboard...similar to small speedboat approaching the wavy harbour not far...the turbofans, however, was EPIC. Larger size means larger risk. Like that TRAVEL Service B737-800 in 3:15...its tail fin mounting must have a short interval of scheduled check for fatigueness, having the fin swifted that rapid...

I"ve seen a lot of videos of this airport with similar conditions and always wondered how do those airlines and the airport makes any revenue with so many divertions. Hopefully most of the passengers are locals, and not business people expecting to get to their meeting at x time, but not on the expected day. Thanks for sharing.

I know that feeling on landing in Madeira on final short when you push the stabilise trim down but the jet doesn't want smoothly descent . Lucky those pilots having runway 23 instead 05 in this windshare landing . I missed Madeira :-(((. Which day it was of Summer time 2013 ? Thanks Sir for giving most charming landings :-)))
@aviationchannel201010 жыл бұрын
Hello Josef, you are quite right in saying that, in the short end, the winds are many unstable sometimes do not want to leave the plane down smoothly, and pushes the plane against the runway. this video was filming in December 10, 2013, best regards Josef

that Q400 and the SAAB 3000 had the wind kicking their asses all over the place, I think a good trick would be to come in a bit low and let the wind blow you toward the threshold and right as you're over the end of the runway nose it down a bit and gently ease off the trottle
@MrFg19809 жыл бұрын
+derek wall I wondered about that, but then thought, geesh, if you hit that windshear too low it might pancake you down so fast you'd have no time to arrest the descent, and probably not be in touchdown attitude(tail low) as you made the effort to. Even the heavy iron got spooked transitioning that windshear. There was a lot of pilots that gave that a shot and didn't get in. I'm wondering if there is a technique for that runway with that much wind, and if this isn't just one of those situations where...airports closed...
@derekwall2009 жыл бұрын
+Frode Grunsvold they should shutdown whenever winds are blowing whenever the crosswinds exceed 20knts about half of what most planes allow for crosswind limits
@MrFg19809 жыл бұрын
derek wall Yeah. They weren't shut down apparently, and probably left it to the crews discretion to give it a shot or not. But whoa. Wind can make you have a bad day. I was in a club with a 172. A member with a freshly minted license took her up with 15-18 gusts to 25. Miffed the landing. There wasn't one straight piece of metal on it. Everyone walked away shaken but not hurt, miraculously. 50 hours on a total overhaul too. A man's got to know(his airplanes) limitations...

Oi Samuel!
