Trent, I got a little experience on welding up header tubes and exhaust systems. Best way to go is to Tig weld it with Hastelloy rod. I kind of fell into this by chance. I was Atlanta Motor Speedway and got a crack at end of the boom-tube on my car. Bad deal, the chip falls off right in front of the rear tire and you could lose a car. All I had was a little Mig Welder and that patch job didn't sit well with me. Bright Idea! there is an airport right next to the track - Aviators are cool, and someone has got to have a Tig Welder over there I can use. This was a Saturday afternoon, and I all I could find was one open door on a Turbine Engine shop. The owner was there in the office and was willing to help a fellow out. They use that rod on Turbine Engines for a reason - and wait until you weld with that stuff on carboned-up exhaust parts. You'll wonder what the hell you have been doing all your life. It is the secret sauce Bro! Stainless or Mild Steel - Samey Same.

Exhaust failures,always seems like no thought is given to the way they resonate and fatigue the way they do,its a weak link that keeps rearing its ugly head,they are building beautiful aircraft and using old technology for exhausts,more research needed and better metals and flex points that absorb the harmonics,and note how they all seem to fail at the same spots.

Hal reminds me of my Dad [God rest his gentle, lovely soul...] he would almost always have grease and dirt on his overalls, and on his hands, but would hug and rough-house with us like that... When my mum would complain - he went out and bought her another washing machine - we had 7 as I grew up! 3 at the same time one time... To this day, I have firm, unhesitating handshakes with mechanics, not minding the grease on their hands!

Ya have ta know that any guy that carries a spare prop strapped to the wing struts and can get a spare engine delivered to a dirt road in the middle of nowhere has to have his stuff together!!! Then he swaps engines along said dirt road and catches up with the group in Oshkosh the next day. THAT is the guy you want flying with your group! Hal seems to be very unassuming, no flash an flurry, just an easy going guy who happens to be extremely competent. I think The Flying Cowboys know how fortunate they are.

5:50... how do you know it is safe or legal (private property, obstacles, surface like ditch or rocks obscured with grass) to land off field?
@joejones3434
@joejones3434 5 жыл бұрын
I think he talked about this in another video. They have maps that show where all the BLM properties are, and if they spot something they want to touch down on there will be a low visial pass first to inspect it before attempting a landing. Even if there are some rocks or ruts, these bush planes are pretty well set up to handle it.

@@joejones3434 I'll look for that video and the one yet to be made: "how I flipped my kitfox landing off field on unknown surface that looked OK from air but...." Ha ha. Thanks good comment. Bottom line yes their planes are suited to land on rough fields as you say, and second there is a risk... no doubt. It's more risk than landing on a known strip. However you can reduce those risk but not eliminate them.
@TrentonPalmer
@TrentonPalmer 5 жыл бұрын
We have land ownership maps to know if it’s legal to land there. As far as obstructions it is part of our 3 pass rule, 2 of which are looking closely at the surface condition, 3rd pass is when we “drag” it with our tires. This particular spot was on a 2 track road, Quinn landed first on the road, then did a good inspection and told us we were clear right next to the road since the road was pretty bumpy. Also, bushwheels save airplanes, they’ll roll over a lot of unseen rocks and ditches.

Always impressive videography - loved the thunder / lightning audio and video in the beginning. That was great, along with all the other shots on this one! 😎👍👍 I see aviation is no different than getting a big group of motorcycles together. Always some breakdowns, especially with the older Harleys. Fuel line leaks, electrical fires, oil leaks, and parts shaking themselves free. 😁 Looks like someone needs to design an exhaust system for those planes modeled after 2-stroke dirt bikes or paramotors. A couple, or a few joints with captured springs to ease the stresses. Even then, they still crack. Common in the paramotor world, too. Light weight steel never lasts, and stainless and titanium are insanely expensive. No easy answers there.

She might be a reluctant flyer, but that lady of yours looks GREAT in that FreedomFox at 7:43 :-)

Wow not sure where to begin on this one. I will start with complement. Great great videos and production. They look amazing. But really have to address the fact that the planes in your group break down a LOT! A one in eight breakdown rate is unacceptable for any mode of transportation. But especially for airplanes. If GA aircraft broke down like this that would be 200-300 forced landings a day. You should not be blaming this on having "highly tuned " aircraft. If that is why then you have carried the tuning too far. That is enough I was gong to say something about landing on other peoples land just for pictures. But that seems so minor in light of how much you planes break down .

Glad you see you guys (and gals) are making progress after the setbacks you encountered on day 1. Like you said, there truly is never a dull moment! And I’m also glad to see that Hailey is having a good time despite her initial fears. She seems to be slowly warming up to flying. And lastly, I liked your choice of music. It fit the video very nicely. I wish you and Hailey a safe trip home, Trent. And the others as well. Looking forward to the next part!

Custer South Dakota - you got to checkout the hamburgers there. We stopped there on our Oshkosh Adventure in the late 90’s in our Mooney 231. That year we flew from Bridgeport CT to somewhere in Ontario Canada to Rockford to OSH to Custer SD to Denver to Rockford then back to Canada to pick my friends son then Bridgeport to clear customs. I agree - it’s not the destination, the adventure is in the trip.

In Worland, Wyoming for the week of Washakie County Fair, and the wind did blow up big in the afternoon a couple days ago. Would not want to be flying in it. Then it was gone.

Damn these tracks are amazing... Your vids are def my kick in the ass to go to pilot school after getting out of the airforce with the dream of flying but too bad they have a hieght requirement that doesnt allow 6ft2in people to fly fighter jets due to cockpit size. I guess thats why the amount of recruits are lied too right at the get go.
