If you're new to Bordeaux wine, this video is for you! We'll go over the basic styles of wine made in Bordeaux France, explain the map and the AOCs found here, and also how to read Bordeaux wine labels. Bordeaux makes some of the most well known, famous wines on the planet, so it's a good appellation for every wine lover to learn! Bordeaux has defined styles of Cabernet Sauvignon blends and Merlot blends that are emulated by winemakers throughout the world, and they also have some amazing white and dessert wines.

There is a mistake in the map at 2:29! Sauternes AOC is only the small green part on the left bank of the Garonne. The sweet wines of the right bank are part of the Entre-Deux-Mers: St-Croix-du-Mont, Loupiac, Cadillac. And you find some sweet wines in the Premieres-Côtes. These are, in general, not vinified in Barriques as opposed to classic Sauternes.🥂

Appreciate it. Good to know the difference between the two styles. However, It’s actually not saying the whole yellow part is Sauternes, but rather the Sauternais, the kind of “nickname” for the area that produces Sauternes style wines. This was something that was approved by the Bordeaux wine council itself, so I’m fairly certain it’s accurate. Hope this clarifies!

I am sorry, but "Sauternais" really only refers to the left side. Graves doesn't overlap to the other side, either! Your map is definitely imprecise at this point for me as a former accredited Bordeaux Wine Educator and DipWSET and having lived in the region for quite a while. 🍷

@@winesynths This map is meant to be a basic guide for people just learning the region, and you're right, speaks in generalities. While I understand you may want it to be more detailed, it's something that just didn't make sense in this video. Hopefully it encourages people to go the route you took, and really learn the region and all its nuances!
