Back in the mid 80's, I was offered a full case of 1982 Le Pin at $2400. I thought they were crazy expensive. Little do I know.... to your list I would add any wines from Le Montrachet ! It's all about supply and demand, usually !

Great story! Wow! I agree about the demand and supply, however, in many cases the scarcity is introduced by the producer, thus further driving prices up. 🤓 rarely the case of Burgundy, knowing their amounts. 🥺

When I hear my grandparent's friends having be able to buy petrus by cases for less than 50 EUR/bottle back in the 90/70' I cry, yes it was expensive but not like now. We all have these stories, but we could also talk about the wines that we bought and we are now afraid of drinking because they gained so much value !

Yes, there are some of these wines that have increased in value over short time it has spent in our wine cellars or fridges. 😅 But I would wish that all of those are opened at some point, because it was ultimately made to be enjoyed. Otherwise it looses its purpose and becomes just a number in an excel file. 🥲😓

15, 16 years ago, we could get a bottle of 2000 Romanée-Conti for 1000€. In the early '80s, a bottle of 1978 Henri Jayer Richebourg was sold 90$ to wine merchants in The US!! Times have changed, and prices are totally insane. I missed many opportunities to buy these bottles. No more regrets. It was a huge privilege to visit the Domaine de La Romanée-Conti and to taste many iconic wines (from Jayer, DRC, Leroy, D'Auvenay , Salon, Clos du Mesnil...) in wine clubs. Felt so lucky😊. I just finished watching all your videos up to now. Congratulations for your channel! I have learned a lot about wines thanks to you. I don’t know why, but since some time ago, my favorite grape variety is Tannat and it seems you haven’t dedicated a video about this understated grape from France but popular in Uruguay… By the way, it would be great if you could talk about wines and vineyards in Mexico. You would be surprise at the quality of their wines and beauty of their vineyards. Cheers!

Hi Agnes, Either you love wine or you are in it for the money. Whether the latter class of people REALLY love wine is debatable. If you really love wine you find a good year, stack up what can from good wineries, leave as long as your patience permits (he he) and then enjoy it irrespective of what it may be worth when you open it. Today I'm on a Barolo from 2016 (super). And in the weekend I will kill my last Barolo from 2001. By the time you wish to enjoy such rarities you may hard pressed to find them let alone afford them.

Wines that I think will increase in value in the future; Kumeu River Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay, Catena Zapata wines both the malbecs and the chardonnays, The Sadie family wines from SA, Andremily Syrah CA (their wine maker used to work with SQN), English sparkling.

In the late 1980's I was offered a case of a wine (a Pomerol) I had (at that time) never heard of. The wine was from the 1982 vintage and the case price was GB pounds 250 (in bond). I didn't have that sort of money spare in those days so declined the offer - the wine was Ch. Le Pin - enough said!...

Epic story, Le Pin is legendary. And some even consider above Petrus. But that has been issue for me as well, not necessarily that You didn’t buy, You just simply couldn’t afford it back then. 🤷‍♀️

In the last 4 or 5 years, there has also been a significant price increase for some Rioja wines, especially from classic producers such as Heredia or Murrieta. When I first started to heavily drink Heredia wines, about 15 years ago, the prices were ridiculously low. Of course, the white and red Gran Reservas were fairly expensive, but nothing to be scared of. Their legendary rose was widely available and you could buy it for 10 Eur. Yes, 10 Eur, if you can imagine that. Now, it's their rarest offering and it sells for about 7-8 times that price. Also, you can purchase their whites only if you get very lucky and very fast when they're launched on the market. Even their "basic", red Tondonia Reserva is increasing in price, year after year. The most ridiculous price increase I've seen for a Rioja wine must be Murrieta's Castillo Ygay. I remember it being around 40 Eur, about 10 years ago. Now, it's nearing the 200 Eur mark, which is insane. The only classic producer from Rioja that manages to keep its prices at reasonable levels is La Rioja Alta. But I don't know for how long...

I once didn't buy a wine (I guess it was a 1979 Clos Vougeot (from Remoissenet if I am right) because Hubrecht Duijker wrote that this not such a good producer - though the wine war very good. And once, I didn't buy a Clos Vougeot 1987 from Faiveley because I have read that this wasn't such a good vintage. But the wine was very good! Also the 1982 crus from Guigal because 1982 wasn't officially superb vintage - but I tasted these wines later an they were very good! I regret to have missed all three! But I also made very good buys - fortunately!😆

Hello Agnes, as always very good videos that are very nutritious for the knowledge of wine, I have been in the world of wine for 10 years, and an older friend was selling bottles from his collection at that time because he wanted to start recovering his investment and I had no heirs, the fact is that I sold bottles of Margaux and Montrachet vintages 1955, 1960 etc at reasonable prices and he gave me prices from a friend, at that time I didn't have money to buy many things now that I see those bottles on the web I regret not being able to buy them. I currently have 893 bottles of all kinds in a heated cellar.

Not a regret of not buying but one of selling (too early). I sold 6 bottles of 2015 Sassicaia in 2018. Today they could be sold for...I don't want to think about it. Suspect I'll also regret selling some mid teens vintages of Saffredi and Flaccianello

@@NoSediment I definitely feel a little guilty about it and am very aware that the damage financial speculation has done in terms of making so many wines unaffordable, in particular in Burgundy, but if I can buy and hold onto Fattoria Le Pupille's Saffredi for a few years and then buy their Poggio Valente with the sale proceeds it makes the latter much more affordable and am able to drink very good wine more often.

I’d have Dunn Vinyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon and Dal Forno Romano Amarone Della Valpolicella on my list. Two of the three wines that first got me interested in wine. The regret is mostly cause they’re personal favorites that are now hard for me to find locally.

Have an on-going task for a costumer, to find him wines, that are affordable now, but could see a great rise in prices over the next decade and a half, for consumption at his kids confirmation and 18-year birthdays (2031-2038). That is a tough cast, and I don´t have a perfect crystalball to predict it. But have focused on not-yet hyped Brunello and Barolo, vintage 2015, 2016 or 2018, along with Montefalco Sagrantino.

Interesting take with your top 5. I like the Tignanello choice not as 'sexy' as Ornellaia or Sassacaia but just as high in quality and a slightly less elevated price. The DRC choice is not a choice even middle of the road collectors can make you need the connection to the in-country agent for DRC (UK-Berry Brothers) and you need to build a history with them before you get put on their prefential lists to even get a sniff at La Tache etc... release prices are eye-wateringly high so deep pockets as well!!!!

I mean their stand in the oenological world has historically been pretty elevated. The rivalry between France and Italy and the challenge for the 1st place in the wine world started in the 80s. We are not talking about US or Germany but Italy so not sure about your comment 😅

Grange is good but there are better Oz wines / Shiraz for much less - Torbreck runrig, Rockford basket press Shiraz and Jim Barry Armagh are examples. Penfolds are all made to chemistry standards and that’s fine but lack imagination and much variability; which the 3 I cite et al., have.

I saw it reported that 71% of Napa Valley wine producers are predicting pretty hefty price increases for 2023. I don't buy wine for investment, but it would seem that pretty much anything you have on the shelf is going to be more valuable in the future. Especially if it ages well!

In my opinion, there are wines that with inadequate price increase risks to be pushed out of the “value for money” category, and might end up in competition with better wines and probably more established brands, therefore it should always be analysed before just increasing the numbers. 🤷‍♀️

It's alright! We do what we can. We can't buy everything. But to be honest, DRC is already out of reach even before the hike. Just look forward and start sniffing out potentials. 5 years ago, when I saw a Domaine Feancois Raveneau Le Clos available, I could've asked my friend to get it but it was a 2hrs drive so I said no. Fast forward now it's like $3K, Do I regret it? No, because friendship is more important than a bottle of juice. But burgundy has gone insane ( like how can a current basic Bourgogne cost as much as a 1er cru a year ago. So I just look for something else

I only got into wine in the past 2 years so for a little while I was just under the assumption that fine wines have always been this expensive. I was very surprised to hear from some folks online how cheap Bordeaux used to be, I was speaking to someone who said that in the 80’s, one could buy chateau Lafite for under $50! Even accounting for inflation, that would be like being able to buy chateau Lafite today for around $120 in todays dollars. Meanwhile great vintages of Lafite are worth thousands. One thing is for sure, the wine producers have certainly enjoyed this dramatic increase in price over the past few decades

Yes, prices of some wines are increasing way faster then inflation. The sad part about that is.. in many cases it is not the wine producer who get to enjoy the margin, but the intermediaries. Large proportion of the Burgundy is quite affordable when released from the winery. 😓😓😓

@@ptg01 Great producers have always produced great wine. Sure, technological advances have allowed producers to make great wines during bad vintages and maintain consistency, but some of the most legendary hailed vintages of all time are from before any of this technology was available.

I had a 2011 Arnoux-Lachaux Chambolle Musigny village 2 years ago which I paid £50. It is now worth 10x that but IMHO after drinking it I thought it wasn't worth £30 but the winemaker's popularity took off in the last year with his more recent vintages...😕

I did open a 1996 DRC Romanée Saint Vivant, seeing the prices it fetches now I actually wished I did not open it lol as it did not live up to my expectations. Leroy Romanee Saint Vivant 2001 on the other hand was just sublime For me, wished I had bought more bottles of Leroy ( never disappoints!) while I could afford buying it 20 years ago. Sylvain Cathiard ( one of my earliest wine purchases), Mugnier, Leflaive, Arnaud Ente just a few other burgundy wines wish I bought more of. As for Italian wines wished I bought more Barolo and Super Tuscans (Sassicaia esp). however, I think Brunello di Montalcino still offer good value esp 2015 2016 I tasted. Champagne, should have bought more Krug for sure Australia for me just Giaconda Chardonnay! I am fortunate to have drank quiet a few sort after cult wines over the years (esp Bordeaux and Burgundy). Nowadays, value for money weighs more heavily in my purchase decision. Life is too short to drink bad wines! Cheers

I don't have any regrets apart from one. It's the 1905 Amontillado from Perez Barquero. It was never 'cheap' but a 100 point wine with special provenance. Why didn't I buy it when it was £150 ten years ago? It's vanished now. I know one place that has a bottle for £300. It's tantalisingly close to a purchase but the image I project is Michelangelo's Adam reaching toward God. It's a fingertip away from a buy. I really can't justify it but it's so close which makes it even more frustrating. WT
