Throwing wine goblets in two parts, the bowl and the stem. Assembling and detailing using a Giffin Grip and trimming tools. As a bonus the video was filmed during a noreaster with all the impressive visuals associated with a classic winter storm.

Tough thing to make and you have your own way. I like that. I take it there is a lot of monitoring and controlling how they dry? Excess moisture on stem bass from hydroplaning off, then it drying from top down? Would love to know how Warren McKenzie's were made but that's another story. Yours too, look as if they would feel good in the hand, and you'd want to drink from them. Few others do.

Wow that looks very cold Vaughan, ice rain that’s one thing I haven’t come across in the UK… Wonderful goblets 😍 I made some candle stick’s in one and that was very difficult, because I wanted the height, but with not much success 🙁 I hope the winds have improved and that your power didn’t go out… Best wishes Mel

Very Nice. Love it. Looking forward to the finished product. Question; When you weigh down your tiles for drying to keep them from warping. Do you also keep them covered in plastic or let them air dry?
@Vsmithpots
@Vsmithpots 2 жыл бұрын
I let them air dry in a damp cupboard. It slows down the drying and stops drafts.

It is wonderful and on time Your clip. I just made my first goblet out of one piece, yesterday. Left a heavy base, the top is just for a shot. First one! I am wondering how I get the base trimmed, without the grib? But good idea your version of throwing and putting together and trimming. Thank You very much for sharing!
@Vsmithpots
@Vsmithpots 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks and trim yours by holding the base down with lumps of clay, you might try wetting the bottom again and sticking it to the wheel head again. Make sure it is leather hard before trimming.

I sat down at the wheel today to give these a try. (Self taught hobiest that likes to play with mud). Your comments about big hands and small balls of clay hit home. I found I had to throw a bit differently than I used to to make the small pieces without twisting chunks off the top of the stem or ripping the bowl. I basically had to form the top and then push that piece upwards from below adding maybe a finger of height on each pass. I could barely touch the top - I could just barely keep the shape smooth and blended, but was always one tiny twitch away from running the attempt. Does that make sense? Anyhow, I had a fun afternoon in the studio, and tried to do something new and challenging. Thanks!
@Vsmithpots
@Vsmithpots 2 жыл бұрын
The type of clay and stiffness makes a big diiference. B-Mix 5 is the easiest to use for these. I will add another demo of this in my bowls video coming the first week of March, there is another goblet video this Sunday.

@@Vsmithpots I was using plainsman m-340s, a mid-fire speckled stoneware, no grog. I can see how grog would make a difference there. I appreciate the feedback - gave me another variable I haven't experimented with much to think about.

Very nice goblets, thank you for the video, I can't wait to see the finished product. I tried to throw a few today and using 1/4 to 1/2 lbs of clay mine are significantly smaller than yours appear to be and I threw them very thin. The lumps of clay in the video appear to be closer to 2/3 ib or more. Are you sure about the weight?
