Ryan Gosling is actually the perfect choice for Ken, hes made a career of very good, but also very masculine noir films, which has inspired lots of "sigma's" to use his as a bit of an icon, even if a bit ironically. Playing a character that goes down the incel pipeline because of a woman rejecting him, then being redeemed by the end of the film and realising that he is "kenough" is a perfect commentary on the effect his films have on certain men. The film handled his character really well in being charitable and understanding of him despite being the villian, giving incels a new ryan gosling role model to aspire to, and hopefully un-incel themselves and be normal

Hi QT! The scene that Greta Gerwig did not want to cut is not the scene with Rhea Perlman! It's the scene with the woman on the bench who Barbie talks to for a few seconds while she cried. She calls her beautiful, after which the lady says: "I know". The lady is (I think) the costume designer on set!

I think the scene Greta Gerwig commented on interviews and QT mentioned at ~44:30 is not the one with the creator of Barbie, but the scene where Barbie starts crying in the park after the flashbacks before she finds the daughter at school, and an old woman is waiting for the bus and Barbie says "you're beautiful", to which the old woman replies "I know", then both of them smile and laugh It may seem like an unnecessary scene at a glance but it basically shows how Barbie doesn't care about outward appearance in respect to women's beauty, nor expects others to compliment her back when she compliments them, she just appreciates the beauty of women as themselves Or at least that's my understanding, great pod as always, hope you bring back the pours if you like 👍

I disagree slightly, particularly on that she doesn't care about outward appearance, I think Barbie moreso hasn't been conditioned to seeing ageing and wrinkling as a negative thing or something ugly as most cosmetic companies do to women, and she can therefore just see the beauty of the woman that most people wouldn't ever acknowledge or even notice

I resonate soooo much with what maya is saying about not being taken seriously because of how you look / sound like. Im 19 and rather petite, and conventionnally prettyish, and im a museum guide. You can FEEL how people do not take you seriously, especially with older men who treat me like an outright child when i do tours, as if i am not an expert on this subject and havent done hours of research on the history in my museum. I want to be treated with the respect i deserve, and i often feel like my appearance has always prevented me from getting to the level of respect id get if I was a man in my 30s.

@michaelramsey82
@michaelramsey82 Жыл бұрын
It really is. When did society collectively decide that a woman under a certain height isn't to be taken seriously? Is it just plain old sexism, or is there more to it than that?
@SableWind
@SableWind Жыл бұрын
@@michaelramsey82 it's a couple different factors. The more traditionally feminine/pretty you are, the less seriously you are taken. The shorter you are (male or female), the less seriously you are taken. The higher & smaller your voice is (male or female), the less seriously you are taken. Any characteristic that puts you in proximity to femininity knocks you down a peg in respectability. Maya is obviously a gorgeous person, and there is some privilege with that, but I'm positive she gets minimized frequently because she has that trifecta of characteristics. I'm personally a 5 foot tall woman, but I somehow wound up with a deeper voice, and I have an assertive streak. I've had people treat me a certain way - like they're talking to a child - until I started talking, and I can almost see that switch get flipped from talking down to a "little girl" to talking with and adult. Craziest thing.

Since I wasn’t raised female, I struggle to relate to a lot of women about “girl adolescence” and stuff, but learning that I felt the same emotions from the same things as two cis women (I also needed to stare at a wall for five hours after Barbie) feels very warm. There were a few points hit on at the end of Barbie that resonated with things I had personally been struggling with to the point that I cried when I watched it. Then I went online later that day to see people calling it stupid/sexist/woke/etc etc and felt pretty dumb for being emotionally affected by it. QT has a point when she says that things made to appeal to women are quick to be belittled, or morphed into something negative.
@SableWind
@SableWind Жыл бұрын
I think I had that reckoning with how much society puts down anything that appeals to women (especially young women/girls) when I watched Lindsay Ellis' essay on Twilight. I hated Twilight with a vengeance when it came out, as did literally everyone else who wasn't a diehard fan of it. And while I still think Twilight is trash lol, you know what didn't get that level of shit and hatred? The equally trash Transformers movies. Fast and the Furious. Any blockbuster action movie that men and boys loved, no matter how crap it was. We really are conditioned as a society to just hate things associated with femininity or that don't platform male interests. I'm not a fan of a lot of things that happen to appeal to more to women, but it wasn't until Lindsay's video that I started really questioning why I dislike some of them so deeply, or asking if part of that dislike was being fed by patriarchal norms. I resented being a woman for a long time because of how society and the media painted femininity as stupid, vapid, shallow, and boring. I had to do a LOT of work to undo the internalized misogyny I developed as a girl growing up in the deeply misogynistic 90s and 2000s.

yeah, that part maya was talking about got to me as well. You can't be beautiful and capable, you have to choose one and either way you're shamed. They're mad you're not trying to be appealing to men, or they're mad you're such a "slut". With the supreme court in particular, if you look at women politicians (for the record I don't like any politicians) if there was a single bikini photo from their past, that would constitute a scandal, or at least weird publicity.

Just a short correction on anything Absinthe mentioned in this episode: No real absinthe will make you hallucinate and you _can_ get real absinthe in the USA, for example Ted Breaux' 1901 absinthe. It's very, very good. Also, the "ritual" mentioned is wrong, as one should _never_ light the sugar on fire. The drink exposes its best aroma when simply mixed with very cold water (no ice, though!) which you dribble either directly into the absinthe (about 3:1 to 5:1 water to absinthe ratio), which you can also do through the sugar on the absinthe spoon to make the sugar dissolve and get into the drink as well.
