halfpuddinghalfsauce.blogspot.... Part 3 of 3 - Winfield Hall - The Woolworth Estate. Best viewed full screen to allow pausing and reading of text. Pairing a 1925 auction document and readily available photos I've compiled a companion video to the Bob Ghent Video production. Winfield Hall is one of the last remaning Long Island Gold Coast estates. Built for Frank Winfield Woolworth of dimestore fame. Winfield Hall was buit in 1916 after Woolworth's original home burned. Cass Gilbert, who designed the Woolworth Building in New York ,is often wrongly named as the architect. Winfield Hall was designed by Charles Pierrepont Henry Gilbert who designed many notable Gold Coast estates that now sadly are gone. Thanks and enjoy.

I'm so thankful someone saved Winfield Hall, like Biltmore, and the Schweppes Mansion. The Armour Estate belongs to Lake Forest Academy, but the original home's grandeur has never been lost. These are America's Castles, frozen in a gilded age that can never be duplicated.

I can still remember well all the times as kids we would meet at the lunchcounter of Woolworths store at the corner of George and Charlotte streets in Peterborough Ontario Canada. Town Farmers Market and Town Clock across the street and Squ are Dancing Friday Nights. No cell phones: full concentration of having Fun; Fun;Fun:

I can't imagine why this hasn't been torn down yet !! It doesn't even have wall to wall carpeting ! How can people live like this. It's like a mausoleum. At least gut out all that "ginger bread" and put in some nice plain sheetrock and dropped ceilings. Those 20 foot ceilings are so old looking. Drop those down to about 8 feet with a metal grid and square tile panel inserts, like a modern office ceiling. All that gold leaf and plaster is so passe. N'est-ce pas? (Just kidding. that whole thing was sarcasm. We lived in a similar house in NJ, but those were the comments we got most often). No we didn't have wall to wall carpeting, we had wall to wall marble from Italy, put in at behest of architects Carerre and Hastings in 1916, and we didn't feel like ripping it out or covering it up with wall to wall carpeting just because the TV set and magazines were pushing that on account of it being the cheapest method of covering a subfloor in a new house. when we bought our house it was to stop it from being torn down. Now it's owned by a pharmaceutical magnate (who may tear it down at any minute to put a proper new house that looks like a post apocalyptic movie set). I know this is an old video but I think someone may still watch it in the future, and part of my reason for commenting is to make the video come up in the searches more often and give the uploader a little juice..

@catghost7 There was a auction in November 1975. According to Monica Randall in her book "WINFIELD' LIVING IN THE SHADOW OF THE WOOLWORTHS "all of Woolworth's prized possessions were sold for a mere fraction of their worth." Theirs a chapter in the book that describes the whole thing. It also mentions a CBS newscaster(Carol Martin) filming at auction. You have to wonder if someone has archival footage?

Every town had a Woolworths, a Kress Store or Newberry's. They were the Walmarts of their day. The toy displays were dreamy. And you could buy candy from walled glass display cases. Our Woolworths had a lunch counter that served good food.

The descriptions move much too swiftly to be able to read them in their entirety!!! What's the rush??? Should be paced at about half the speed!!! One loses the full effect of this Grand Estate. So sad.

My first job was at Woolworths in Addison, IL. I worked at the candy counter in the center aisle, next to shoes, and across from housewares. Wow, I just visualized it. Haven't thought of that in decades. Nothing was selling for nickles and dimes (other than candy) but the store was located just a stone's throw from Benjamin Franklins 5 and dime. Gosh, we were getting milk delivered to our home each morning in a metal box on the back porch. Then Zayre and Venture came and went. then there was a K-Mart... that was bought by Wal-Mart which are all gone today...along with the mom and pop shops that they put out of business. One thing is certain...nothing ever stays the same, and you can never go home.

The video is nicely done, but this mansion is pretty plain compared to many other mansions built during the golden age! Not say that it isn't built on a grand scale, just the design and layout is pretty awkward. it just lacks the WOW factor, like the Biltmore estate, Whitemarsh and Lynnewood Hall, Rough Point, The Breakers, Rosecliff, etc... give. The interiors are nice, but I just LOVE!!!! That foyer with the ascending staircase, for me that is just magnificent !!! all in all, if I had to c

They’re all gas and used to have “wooden” inserts made of some sort of stone. Woolworth was far ahead of his time.

Music far too overpoweringly 'rousing' for viewing the actual building rooms and gardens etc. ; it detracts from the visuals. Sadly, I had to give up and couldn't watch any of these three videos.

This is the only house of its size and history that I actually do not like at all. The outside looks like a huge federal building. The inside is just meh, maybe even ugly to me. I do appreciate it's history and well, who didn't love Woolworths, but I expected much more than I saw.
