How exactly was Danny disrespectful? Are we not practicing a COMBAT Martial Art? Danny was VERY respectful...he could have HIT me in the face in stead of pushing me. Danny Horgan contacted me prior, we spoke, we met and we TRAINED. This young man is about as respectful as they come. -Dominick Izzo

Danny, can you give some context to the Chi-Sao? It looks the objective was to basically slap the other guy in the face and if that was the objective, it looked like you were able to slap Dominick more times than he did to you. Would that mean that you were able to "beat" him in the "sparring"?

Izzo needs to get those elbows under control and needs to loosen up a bit, he's so tense and I see this in most videos where he is doing chi-sao. Danny, I think the show is awesome. Keep up the good work brother.

I have followed Dominick for quite some time now... he tends to lean towards his strength and forgets Wing Tsun was designed so that the little one can defeat the big one! Chained punches was designed to concentrate numerous hits on one spot and it has been scientifically proven that the human body can only withstand but so many punches to the same spot before giving up!

That is exactly why Wing Chun has no belt or ranking system. On any given day an amateur boxer and a professional boxer can get into the ring and spar. Just because the Pro is "better" doesn't mean he will walk out un-hit...hitting is their language. Danny is a fighter...unless we were in true combat where we were allowed to unleash hell, there will always be traded blows. THAT is how we communicate.

Just a question...but if strength is my attribute, why would I NOT use it? What if speed was or distance like Danny's? NOT using what I have would make it YOUR Wing Chun and not mine.

My thoughts? Please keep in mind, first off my size and background. Wrestling since 1988, working in 4am bars and former Police Officer. I am a VERY aggressive person. I use and control my muscle / strength / power very well. That's not to say what you are referring to has no value for others. For me, I want to cultivate and develop MY game further. And at this stage of my WC path, I am still playing the younger man's game.

I really appreciate you going around to different schools and exploring different teaching styles and approaches to Wing Chun. For anyone who is critical of how you or the Sifu you interview does their kung fu, I'd simply ask them to put up a video of them fighting to show us how they think it should be done. My Sifu has been using Wing Chun in tournaments and on the street for 40 years and has taught many instructors and law enforcement. His pet peeve is "teachers" who can't or won't fight.

The reason WC chains the attack (punches) to the head is that it has been proven to be the fastest way to incapacitate an opponent. Some people can resist being punched in the head once, but almost no one can maintain consciousness after the second, third or fourth hits. If the idea is to end the fight quickly, you shouldn't be spreading the hits out across the body, you should be ruthlessly chaining the attack to your opponents head.
@Chibi_Bendrix11 жыл бұрын
***** In the street, covering is a lot more different that in the ring. Pressing the gloves to your face in a peek-a-boo boxing stance in the ring is rather simple, and you can take punches to the glove quite easily. In real life if you cover up, you don't have 12 oz of hardened cushion wrapped in leather to simply dissipate punches with. There are 26 tiny bones in the hand. There isn't a lot of muscle in the hands either, most of the 26 bones are simply joined together by ligaments. Of course one could make the adjustment of simply covering with the face with the forearms which are a much more suitable shield. To which a wing chun man would probably initiate a clinch and throw knee strikes as normally if you lift your arms up a little higher to cover with your forearms you expose more of the stomach region. But that isn't to say boxers aren't good street fighters, in fact they're rather good at street fighting. I even have a seperate tactic for fighting boxers in the street - that's how much I respect the art's combat value. I just feel like covering in the street is a bad idea, because when you think about it, ultimately boxers only know how to punch, and covering uses their only weapons (the hands) to be their defence. Applying that logic, covering is a no no. Also, covering invites their opponent to change the fighting range from the pocket (general boxing exchange range) to the grappling range, as hands close to the body generally invites grapplers to move in an neutralise their opponents punches. Sorry for the wall of text!

***** the "what if" land it´s so vast that it´s out of the question , I mean in a real fight there are infinite ifs..what if the guy it´s faster..what if... what if he pulls out a gun!! .For any action there is a reaction and depends on the fighter skill , if he can deal with the action. Great grand masters of wing chung gained the reputation by fighting hundreds of times , bare knucles no rules (yes ufc did not discover real fighting, and mma it´s not real fighting either way)Do you think they never faced a taller, faster, stronger opponent? do you thin they´d go .. ok you are taller and you have western boxing skills .. no need to fight you won already... ip man was a short skinny guy just lost one fight and he loved to fight.. not a peacefull guy at all

***** I understand that if they're a good boxer they'll just cover or dodge then hit you back. But that's assuming you aren't good at what you do also. Essentially, if you're fighting anyone who's any good, and you suck, you'll lose obviously. Doesn't matter what move you're trying to do. Really the idea though is more of a 1-2 hit to the head, when aimed at the head. Reason being, it's the second hit that does the knock out. You're not trying to get 50. The first hit knocks the brain to the back, the second hit slams it before it can return to it's natural place causing the black out. The 50 hits are for other purposes and won't just be 50 straight hits. That's more like, block, hit, block, hit, block, hit. You don't get the opportunity to just throw 50 punches. But again, to the head it's typically just like a 1-2 combo, just using straight punches.
@kylrapture10 жыл бұрын
Darth, from my own personal experience if that first hit doesn't stun or knock out outright, vs anyone with experience you won't land the rest of the chain. I once came a cropper vs a greco roman guy who literally absorbed the first three or so then it was like being mauled by a bear lol

1) Wing Chun was designed to work without needing strength. That is not saying that adding strength correctly does not enhance it. As he pointed out, if you have a reach on someone, aren't you going to capitalize on that and let it dictate which range you use? 2) Realistically, how many chain punches are you really going to land to the same target? When your first shot lands, they're still a moving target.Even if they dont get their arms back into position you will have to close or reface.

the power can be internal with or without the muscle, my theory and my sifu (student of ip ching) believe that strength is a great advantage, if u have to people of the SAME skill level and one is much stronger and taller they will win. Internal power in the punches relies on relaxing your muscles and throwing the mass of you body into them like a whip with an iron ball on the end of it, the more mass you have in your arms and body, the more internal power you will be able to generate.

Curious as to your logic... I'm not saying you are, but if you are conceding that Ip Man is the more skilled fighter, why do you assume that stamina and luck would enter into it? Why wouldn't Ip be throwing destructive shots that would quickly take those out of the equation as is the goal of the system? If you are a novice and play 1000 chess matches against a GM you will never just "get lucky", but I do understand this isnt exactly a 1:1 with physical skill sets.

I think Bruce Lee would win a fight with IP Man. Bruce could be affective at any range because he could do a lot more than just Wing Chun. If Bruce chose to keep the fight at long range where Wing Chun is not very effective, Ip Man would have a very hard time closing the gap.
@PaulConway197311 жыл бұрын
I disagree ... Bruce Lee would have outgunned IP Man if he wanted to at the point in time when Bruce was at his peak... Ip Man was in his 70s .. So being real ... it's a dreamworld where Izzo is living with that statement. It's insulting to the memory of Ip Man and lee-xiaolong

The only thing that makes Bruce Lee so dangerous was his was his fencing skill witch greatly helped his Wing Chun.. His American Boxing style opened him up for fatal blows but his fencing protected him somewhat.. Bruce Lee was never world champion. . He was a physical actor.. Bruce' American boxing incorporated made him more venerable

The Slow-mo was important, the eye cant really gain from a chi-sao vieo at normal speed. I think that chi-sao comparing can be a disease though, because it often leaves out the bridging phase in order to be more harmonious ( is that a word?) and comfy. Its overemphasized :/ Great video though

people will move the hell outa the way if you try and throw 10 punches to there body or head, chain punches have been a miss conception in alot of the wing chun lineages and they rely on them to win the fight. Chain punches as you see repetivly were designed to delvelop hand speed before you learned the turning and footwork in the 2nd and 3rd form. look at sifu sam kwok in the carlson gracie demo explaining true wing chun punching power.

Hard to really comment when nobody has seen either guy fight, Bruce always looked very good in movies and very dynamic, but who knows how he would have reacted in a real situation or actually getting punched in the face. Wong Shun Leung had many "beimo" or fights and was a known fierce fighter. Possibly the best of his day against other styles. Accounts about how many people or if there was a ref or not vary, but he stopped after inadvertently blinding an opponent for life. His Wing Chun was combat proven and dangerous. They are working to make a film based on his real life. Very fascinating man.
