Discussing ideas and on attitude for practicing Chisau in Wing Chun.
*A note about this channel the lineage:
Sifu Nima King is the owner and team leader of Mindful Wing Chun, a CST Wing Chun school in Hong Kong with affiliations around the world. Mindful Wing Chun is wholeheartedly dedicated to passing on the internal wing chun method as passed down by Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin who was the longest serving student of Grandmaster Ip Man. Chu Shong Tin lived with Ip Man for 5 years (1950-1955) and was coined the title ' the king of siu nim tao' by his master Ip Man.
He was a legend in the world of Wing Chun (in particular the internal method of wing chun) and spent 64years passing it on full-time before he passed away in 2014. Nim King practiced under hin in Hong Kong for 9 years and established Mindful Wing Chun under CST's guidance. Nima is also on the board of Directors for the 'Chu Shong Tin Alumni' which is a group of senior students of CST that were hand picked by him to establish the Alumni and to uphold and continue his teachings and Wing Chun legacy after he passed away.
Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin was a very humble and low-key Wing Chun Master therefore its only after we began putting his videos online, that people started to hear about him. In fact, majority of the main Wing CHun teachers (of the Ip Man lineage) who began practice in the 50s and early 60s (apart of Leung Sheung and Lok Yiu) were trained by CST even-though they were Ip Man's students. This is due to CST being the most snr and main teacher of Ip Man's school in those days.
Nima was lucky to start his practice under CST in 2005 because that's when CST decided to change his teaching to all internal practice so that he can pass on "Nim Tao' and 'Nim Lik' (the mind power/energy cultivated through internal Wing Chun practice) to his students.
Nima, even though a non-chinese and much younger than the other students of CST, attained a high level of these final teachings. He now mainly teaches the seniors within this lineage and also travels around giving workshops and is working on an online program so that master CST's teaching can have a greater reach.

Great explanation Nima. Can I say it again? Sigung would be so proud. And happy to know that his time spent with you was definitely worth every minute. He had hoped only that Wing Chun would remain untainted and continued to be passed to the next generation in tact 👍🏻👍🏻 You’re a great Sifu

The student named Daniel, who I had asked you to see if you could track down for me, had managed to show me this same feeling with his chi sau. Watching you in this lesson, I can see the same thing. Leaving your shoulder joints completely relaxed and settled back in their natural position. Then allowing your spine and centre to be the source of your power. I wish you all the best for your continued teachings Nima. Perhaps I’ll get a chance to come to Hong Kong again. It would be fantastic to see you and Horace again. I’ve not been back since 96. For some reason I feel I met you at Chi Sau Club once when I visited Mark around 2010 ? I love it there in HK . Cheers man .

@@wingchun-simplekungfu7584 Man that would be so good if you could come here. It's such a great city. some parts have changed since the 90s but a lot of it is still the same. Not sure we met in 2010 at Chisau club. I would have remembered cause prior to coming to HK I used to watch the videos of your 91 trip a lot so I would've remembered if I had met you. Hopefully one day soon though!

@@MindfulWingChun yeh. Maybe. Your manner is familiar. I was only there once. 2010 or 11. Mark introduced me to some of his students and one guy asked if I was the guy from the HK video. Thought it might have been you ? It would be nice to visit you guys. It would be great if I could get Dave Lovegrove to come too.

Fantastic, I am sure a lot of people will not understand this as the CST method is alien to them, but this is a great explanation.

Now it makes so much sense that siu nim tau is the first form... Thx , im comming out of the EWTO in Europe and there nothing made sense to me, now im starting to understand... Haha and just after my comment i saw you saying i stopped chi sao for 5 years. Being able to be in the siu nim tau state while combat must take a lot of time to learn.

My pleasure and glad to hear that it made sense to you. The reason I stopped Chisau is because prior to coming to Hong Kong and training under him, I was doing honestly around 40hours of Chisau per week and we were just beating the crap out of each other so I had so much bad habits to break which is the reason I stopped do for the time I did to basically reset my method of application. It doesn't take too long to be able to correctly apply it to Chisau and fighting actually especially if they person doesn't have too many bad habit like I did. i have students that get very good in the application after a few years of correct practice!

chisau is not about rolling it is about seeking the chance to hit

through the use of circular forces to off-balance and redirect, to be able to defend and attack with very little effort (hence the term rolling)

Sifu Nima, IS there a role for the analytical mind in chi sau and in fighting? Or is the analytical stuff something you should use while training while relying on the resultant programming and feeling in applications and real scenarios?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 2 жыл бұрын
At the beginning the analytical mind may be necessary to remember and constantly remind yourself what needs to be done. This thinking, if you have the right teaching/steps to follow, will then lead to feeling and a state, and in that time you wont need any analytical thinking and in fact that will act as a hindrance to the state.

3:35 you mention that you are sensing how to affect the whole lot. Would Sigung have agreed that use of nim tao is affecting the other person? Or would he say that it is simply a state of one's own body?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 7 жыл бұрын
Max Yeung yeah man thats what Sigung would say. He said at a high level the aim is to affect the opponent as soon as you touch them. He could put his hands on a persons forearm and make them stuck. He would lock up their joint with a light touch. Hopefully one day I can do that too :) maybe in 20yrs!

There is no opponent. Because the word "I" does not exist. 😉
@Far7anR
@Far7anR 2 жыл бұрын
@@MindfulWingChun That sounds like na jin, or seizing jin, from taiji! Not saying that they are the same thing - I am just surprised to hear that this exists in wing chun. Crazy. Could that locking extend to the entire body, or just that joint? Could CST control an opponent's body to some degree?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 2 жыл бұрын
@@Far7anR Yes, definitely can control the other person's body. He was able to touch/strike someone's forearm with him and make them feel it in their hip or knee etc. So was sending and directing his force through the persons body. Pretty cool to experience 😊

Chisau?? All Wing Chun people should read this new book Myths and blind spots in the fighting arts’ world. - After the Bible, it’s the next "gοοd bοοk" for you! There’s a chapter there where he deals extensively with Wing Chun issues, one being chi sao. He proves that as a drill it's deceiving and useless practice as he calls it and that it delays WC for self defense since too much time is given to it. I am totally convinced he's right. I believe that deep down many will agree with his perspective as he goes in detail to explaining it. He's not against very basic sensitivity drills, even though those as he says are not necessary for self defense. He also says that WC seems to be made for fighting WC people not trained or untrained street fighters. He does however give his solutions as to how to make WC realistic and worthy of practicing.

he must has a misconception on what chisau is used for and is mistaking it as practicing fighting techniques, which is not what chisau is (a common misconception indeed)
@thebestisyettocome8620
@thebestisyettocome8620 2 ай бұрын
@@MindfulWingChun No he clearly knows what he's talking about. As I said, he says it's a drill but a very time consuming useless one that deceives people into thinking that that is what fighting is about. Don't care to go here into the details, but whatever, have a good day.
