Nima Share's his ideas on why Wing Chun Kung Fu is a way of life!
*A note about this channel the lineage:
Sifu Nima King is the owner and team leader of Mindful Wing Chun, a CST Wing Chun school in Hong Kong with affiliations around the world. Mindful Wing Chun is wholeheartedly dedicated to passing on the internal wing chun method as passed down by Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin who was the longest serving student of Grandmaster Ip Man. Chu Shong Tin lived with Ip Man for 5 years (1950-1955) and was coined the title ' the king of siu nim tao' by his master Ip Man.
He was a legend in the world of Wing Chun (in particular the internal method of wing chun) and spent 64years passing it on full-time before he passed away in 2014. Nim King practiced under hin in Hong Kong for 9 years and established Mindful Wing Chun under CST's guidance. Nima is also on the board of Directors for the 'Chu Shong Tin Alumni' which is a group of senior students of CST that were hand picked by him to establish the Alumni and to uphold and continue his teachings and Wing Chun legacy after he passed away.
Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin was a very humble and low-key Wing Chun Master therefore its only after we began putting his videos online, that people started to hear about him. In fact, majority of the main Wing CHun teachers (of the Ip Man lineage) who began practice in the 50s and early 60s (apart of Leung Sheung and Lok Yiu) were trained by CST even-though they were Ip Man's students. This is due to CST being the most snr and main teacher of Ip Man's school in those days.
Nima was lucky to start his practice under CST in 2005 because that's when CST decided to change his teaching to all internal practice so that he can pass on "Nim Tao' and 'Nim Lik' (the mind power/energy cultivated through internal Wing Chun practice) to his students.
Nima, even though a non-chinese and much younger than the other students of CST, attained a high level of these final teachings. He now mainly teaches the seniors within this lineage and also travels around giving workshops and is working on an online program so that master CST's teaching can have a greater reach.

Thank you for such fundamental but profound insight and advice on the role of the Mind. It’s wonderful to know that the hard work is in the practice of correct relaxation, rather than the hard physical labour we as a society have habituated and make it out to be the path. Thank you for giving Clarity to a confused mind🙏. Hope I get to HK and learn from you sometime😃.

Thank you for sharing your instruction. I have found this video very conducive to my understanding of active relaxation and I've taken up relaxing the chains of the body in order to release the bicep as a very proficient practice. Thank you for your inspiring direct pointing. There is not much that I know about Wing Chun, but this video has peaked my interest. Are you actively teaching nowadays?

Hi Nima ! Great Channel and amazing value, its good to see more and more quality wing-chun on you-tube. In my school we also train internal wing-chun and we put great emphasis on Qi-Gong training to teach us the energy work that is required to do wing-chun, did CST do any qi-gong exercises in addition to the wing-chun forms ? Thanks :)

Cheers! No Sigung Chu only practiced Wing Chun. He did Tai Chi in his teens but he said he never really enjoyed it so didn't get very far with it. His energy/Chi which he named Nim Lik was obtained solely from the practice of Siu Nim Tao.

Thank you Sifu Nima for the insight. i learned many things from your KZbin channel vid in my Wing Chun training, two question though, based from Sigung Chu Song Tin Siu Nim Tao, how many hours and any specific time (day or night or morning or evening etc)? For practicing it , do we must also training them with Chum Kiu, Biu Jee,and any other form (Wooden Dummy, and weapon) in same day or must different day? Need your hints. Hopefully in near time can joining your online training. Thnx u. Greeting from Indonesia
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 4 жыл бұрын
The most important thing is the quality of training (more than the quantity). once you have the correct path/steps of practice, then obviously the more you practice the better and faster you will improve. There is no specific time of day that is better. And yes, once you have a good enough understanding in SNT, you should practice the other forms in the correct sequence. And yes the online school spells out every step of every form and technique and exercises laid out by Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin so that will set you on the right path for sure when you do start :)

Nima, This is fascinating. Must check this out next time you come back to Sydney. You mentioned practice a lot. But practising what? Zooming the mind into turning off the bicep?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, I meant practicing everything but mainly the Siu Nim Tao form. the relaxation of a local area i.e. bicep is only a demonstration. ultimately we want to be able to hold/move the entire body with minimum use of muscular effort so that would be the best thing to try and figure out how to do in all aspects of training i.e. forms, chisau, bag work, sparring and ultimately in a real self defense situation. But the easiest place to understand and practice effortlessness is in the Siu Nim Tao form
@samt9834
@samt9834 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Nima, thanks for this great vid! I'm just wondering what is the relationship between nim tao/nim lik to some of your demonstrations in this vid. Did you have to activate nim tao in order to completely relax the bicep for your tan sao?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, a level of Nim Tao needs to be activated for one to be able to relax the bicep even when under pressure. Nim Tao is a mental state than one achieves through the correct and prolonged practice of Siu Nim Tao. After year of that, the body (muscles and joints) will open up and release to such an extent where Nim Lik (chi/energy) will be released and then it can be used by the practitioner.

Thanks for the video Sifu. Have you tried an electromyography (EMG) to measure the muscle force on different muscles on your body under pressure or while doing siu nim tao? You can actually see if the muscle is relaxed or not. I think it'll be good video content for this channel =) Nim Tao State Vs. Normal State
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 4 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, I actually had some tests done in a lab in a university in Queensland, Australia a couple of years ago. They put me on force plates to take force, hooked up EMG type stuff to my legs. My main interest was for them to test whats going on in the spine and upper body. They did put some probes on my shoulders and arms (bicep and triceps) to test muscle activity of my arm while under pressure and holding a light object. It was connected to a screen which showed the amount of muscle activity. I was able to decrease the muscle activation by around 4times while under pressure :)

@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 8 жыл бұрын
Hey, Yes it is. But what Chu Shong Tin said is you need to spend the same amount of time relaxing afterwards. so if you lift weights for 1 hr you need to relax for an hour immediately after so the muscles don't memorize that tension state...

I have to ask you Nima. Have you practiced wim Hof's breathing techniques? Also, have you heard of Adam mizner? You all have a very obvious similarity. Being able to shift your conciousness from the frontal lobe. Which seems to give all of you unexplainable Strengths. I'm new to wing chun or any form of martial arts that is. But I have done a lot of meditation in search of some form of internal control of energy, chakra, chi etc. What ever you wish to call it, you cannot deny that there is some sort of energy that is accessible to us that the general public does not use or even acknowledge. Anyhow.. Wim Hof's breathwork and cold exposure techniques have given me a taste of that internal control. As I go on, I can feel it becoming a constant state. I have much better control over my emotional and physical responses and have become very conscious of internal organs. This has given me better muscular control as well but nothing like you and Adam Mizner have demonstrated. I'm wondering if you could incorporate some breathwork into your practices to help you rise up and find that state of mind that allows you to "sing" as you say. After one round of Wim Hof's breathing my mind has shifted. I can literally feel that new parts of my brain are activated. It creates a comforting sensation on the back of my neck at the bottom of my skull. I plan to practice this along with Wing Chun, striving to hold onto this state of mind. Being that this state of mind seems to be the key component. I apologize for the lengthy comment. I'm sure you are a busy man. Thank you for all of the useful content. You have already helped me so much. And I have only seen your older videos. Great work man.
@MindfulWingChun

I've dabbled in Hoff's method but I mainly practice Pranayama. And yes I'm friends with Adam Mizner and we have touched hands. There are some similarities in what we do and we use the same words like relaxation and openness and using the mind but what we do is fundamentally different and so the result is also not the same

@@MindfulWingChun The terms "Mindful Wing Chun" and Nim Tao is very consistent to the Buddhist heritage of the art. The ancient Indian Buddhist masters translated the important concept of sati/smrti (mindfulness) using the Chinese word "Nim" 念. Instead of the Daoist concepts of "dantian" and "qi" of Taiji, the mind is emphasised instead in Wing Chun. True to the heritage of Bodhidharma and the nun Ng Mui.
