In this video we go deeper into What Taigung is and how it should be applied to relax the legs and the mid-section of the body. This is very useful for people who get very tired (or sore legs/feet) when they stand in the Wing Chun Stance. The footage is from the seminars that Grand master Chu Shong Tin did in Hong Kong at Mindful Wing Chun a couple of years before he passed away!
*A note about this channel the lineage:
Sifu Nima King is the owner and team leader of Mindful Wing Chun, a CST Wing Chun school in Hong Kong with affiliations around the world. Mindful Wing Chun is wholeheartedly dedicated to passing on the internal wing chun method as passed down by Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin who was the longest serving student of Grandmaster Ip Man. Chu Shong Tin lived with Ip Man for 5 years (1950-1955) and was coined the title ' the king of siu nim tao' by his master Ip Man.
He was a legend in the world of Wing Chun (in particular the internal method of wing chun) and spent 64years passing it on full-time before he passed away in 2014. Nim King practiced under hin in Hong Kong for 9 years and established Mindful Wing Chun under CST's guidance. Nima is also on the board of Directors for the 'Chu Shong Tin Alumni' which is a group of senior students of CST that were hand picked by him to establish the Alumni and to uphold and continue his teachings and Wing Chun legacy after he passed away.
Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin was a very humble and low-key Wing Chun Master therefore its only after we began putting his videos online, that people started to hear about him. In fact, majority of the main Wing CHun teachers (of the Ip Man lineage) who began practice in the 50s and early 60s (apart of Leung Sheung and Lok Yiu) were trained by CST even-though they were Ip Man's students. This is due to CST being the most snr and main teacher of Ip Man's school in those days.
Nima was lucky to start his practice under CST in 2005 because that's when CST decided to change his teaching to all internal practice so that he can pass on "Nim Tao' and 'Nim Lik' (the mind power/energy cultivated through internal Wing Chun practice) to his students.
Nima, even though a non-chinese and much younger than the other students of CST, attained a high level of these final teachings. He now mainly teaches the seniors within this lineage and also travels around giving workshops and is working on an online program so that master CST's teaching can have a greater reach.

Very interesting, in I-chuan, Tai-Chi, Liuhebafa, Hsing-I and Bagua, the same references are made, relax the body, let the fascias work, align your body, let the energy circulate, the emphasize on softness is the base of the "work" as the say goes "where the mind goes the energy goes"...

First of all a big thank you for all the hard work and sharing. Your videos are an eye-opener! If it's ok with you, I'd like to ask something about tai gung, namely how it translates to English and if possible how it's written in Hanzi. I suppose that gung is the same gung of nei gung, qi gung and gung fu, namely "skill", or 功. But as for "tai", I am not sure and I was surprised to not be able to find anything after a brief search. Thanks again, this internal approach is truly fascinating! :)
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 5 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for the kind comment. Taigung is Cantonese and the literal translation is to 'lift up from the anus'. I'm not sure how to write it in Hanzi but am sure of the direct translation. I'm happy that you are finding this method interesting. Not sure if you are aware but we have launched our online school earlier this year www.mindfulwingchun.online and its for those who would like to really delve deep into CST's teachings. There's literally 100's of videos that go through what he taught step by step totaling in over 50hrs of footage just in the first few months :) If you are interested, you can use the discount code: LAUNCHCODE which gives 12% off the subscription.

@@MindfulWingChun Thank you for your response! :) It seems then that gung in taigung isn't the same as the one in gung fu. :) I am practicing Wing Chun myself, for about a year now. Wong Shun Leung / Gary Lam lineage. I am very interested in the development of Taigung and inner skill/power so, I am surely going to delve deeper in Chu Shong-Tin's teachings in the future but, for the time being, I think sticking to the lineage I am practicing would be best, so that I won't be trying to carry one watermelon too many under a single armpit. :) However, thank you very much for the offer, it's very kind of you. In fact, even your KZbin videos are more than enough to keep me interested for months! I'm already trying to feel, say my arm, resting still and then trying to move it slowly, without muscular effort while simultaneously trying to feel it moving! :) Of course, I remember you saying it's a holistic approach, it's not just "one arm, one leg, and then you combine them", and I intend to follow it myself, as I too better understand it like so, but one's got to start somewhere, eh? :)

“Taigung” is 提肛 Literal translation is “lifting up the rectum”. Of course, Sifu said do not try to intentionally do it, but think about it as if you are thinking about holding your poo poo in.

So the point is just trying to get your legs to relax as you do the sil lim tao form how long until you start relaxing
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 7 жыл бұрын
yes. the entire body needs to be mindfully relaxed. but the legs and pelvis area take much longer to relax since they are supporting the weight of the body. It's hard to say how long it will take as it depends on so many factors such as if the student is practicing correctly (under good guidance if possible), how tense and unaligned their body is to start, how many hours they practice SNT daily etc.. My advice would be to practice daily and try to figure out how to stand and move with AS LITTLE EFFORT AS POSSIBLE! hope that helps and good luck :)

I personally think that you need to come to Indonesia and share your idea about Sigung's Wing Chun, since there are so many misperceptions about Wing Chun here. And most of them (if not all of them) use external force and just mimicking the movements only. Sad but true.

Hello, Nima. I was wondering how does one practicing TaiGung? Should I just stand in this stance trying to achieve the feeling described in the video? Thank you very much. You are doing a great job.
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 7 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, Yes I would recommend to just practice it as mentioned in the videos I've put up about Tai Gung. But try your best to use as little effort as possible. Taigung should result in deep relaxation so try not to over do it physically.

Amazing Nima!!! Does the practice of standing still reduce the need for sleep? Do you think (as mental process) on taigung and than it happen or do you get in mindful relaxation and taigung is a consequence of muscle relaxation itself?

Nima, let's say I am practicing siu lim tao. I try to do taigong as soon as I get in the stance. Then I start the form. Should I keep focusing on the taigong as I do the form or only in the beggining? Because I was studying another video here about the relaxation on the back. So as I am practicing the form, i do taigong and the focus on relaxing my back and feel the energy going thru the top of the head. Am I doing right?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 7 жыл бұрын
sounds right but it's very hard to confirm unless I actually feel what you're doing. if it feels effortless and comfortable then youre on the right path. And yes Taigong stays on throughout the whole form/wing chun practice. So if you're using effort to do it it will feel uncomfortable. think Effortless and Mindfulness :)
