Thanks! Another great tutorial. Question regarding the "windsurf" style water start. Relative to body weight, how much less volume board would be necessary to utilize this technique? Such as, if 60kg body wt would it be possible with a 55L board? Tough for us lightweights to find stock wing foil board much smaller. Might have to consider prone foil surf board? Like the foot strap. Long to allow for easy foot rotation out in case of unplanned body launch?
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru29264 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes possible with a 55 liter board but the wind has to be strong. The stronger the better. It will be even easier with a prone board but then there are other challenges with the prone board. The custom foot strap is long to allow moving the foot fore and aft depending on board speed or foil placement in the tracks
@MatthewMentz014 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alan maybe you should warn viewers about the definite risk of a sharp wing tip tearing canvas with the slightest backwind of the wing, or do you think this isn't a risk?
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru29264 жыл бұрын
The foil is typically under water. I have not had any problem so far. I hope you have not torn your wing trying this. Most of the wing damage I have seen has been while carrying the board and wing at the same time.
@Rocco_Kurokawa4 жыл бұрын
But why would you need a hook on the harness? There are Kite harnesses with just string, so the chicken loop can slide left to right a bit, nice for wave riding and no protruding parts. A bit less stability if it can slide, but depending how one attaches the line to the Kitewing I'm sure you can make it not slide. So when buying a harness for Kitewinging, considering one with optional string plate might help.
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru29264 жыл бұрын
You might be on to something there. LMK how it works
@johnbridal32044 жыл бұрын
I use rope slider for kiting, but the negative is the ease of connection for chicken loop -- eg for tether self launch or for riding unhooked. I haven't used a harness for winging, but I believe they use a harness loop like windsurfing, which hangs off the wing and then loops into hook -- I don't think a rope slider would work for this.

Can we do this water start on a big wing? Mine is 8m2
@sincerbeaux7674 жыл бұрын
Hello Alan, I met you in Maui many years ago while I went through about a ten year windsurfing phase of my life. Switched to kitesurfing and never looked back. Learning to foil now (late to the game). I am just not convinced winging is “all that”? I see a few advantages but in the end, it seems like winging is trying to make a full circle back to windsurfing? But, from what I have seen, wing foiling seems like a very low performance version of windsurfing.
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru29264 жыл бұрын
Aloha John, Have you seen my latest post "Summer Fun"? I spent almost 40 years while in my windsurfing phase. Winging is as different to windsurfing as kiting is to windsurfing. I don't want to make comparisons but I can tell you I have not looked back. And you are not late to game, it is only getting started.

Do you find your powered transition where you flip the Wing are easier to do with the fixed boom? Have you tried the powered flip with a Wing with loop handles?
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru29264 жыл бұрын
Yes, easier with a boom because you don't have look the the boom.

Great!!! Can you start with a twintip in the water ?
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru29264 жыл бұрын
I have never tried with a twin tip. I suppose in enough wind. LMK I have seen videos of sailors using a hand wing to ride a surfboard or skim board so anything is possible but know that the hand held wings seem to work best when matched with a board mounted on a foil

helps to weigh a 100lbs to do this
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru29264 жыл бұрын
I do weigh more than 100 pounds. How many liters is your board and how strong is the wind where your at? I can tell you I can only do this with my 4 meter wind in 25 knots or more .18 to 20 knots with a 6 meter wing.
@jamesc61374 жыл бұрын
I rarely get that kind of wind. And I’m 92kg’s My wind is 6-15mph on average. I’d love to be able to deep water start a 4’11” Armstrong w/ 6m ozone, and 2400cf foil...but most likely a stretch.

Why do people consistently try to make surfing and windsurfing etc more difficult than it needs to be.
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru29264 жыл бұрын
My mission is to help people understand this sport by expanding their knowledge base. You can spend a lifetime learning surfing and windsurfing etc, as I have and still find challenges. If I can help you be better at any aspect of them than I am a better person for it.
@Hotwire_RCTrix4 жыл бұрын
@@alancadizwingfoilinginstru2926 I wasn't trying to offend you Alan and I apologize if I did. I was suprising how small your board choice was. It's difficult to imagine what benefit would come of it and that so many sports like this become committed to making it more difficult without becoming any more fun.
@alancadizwingfoilinginstru29264 жыл бұрын
@@Hotwire_RCTrix Thank you, No offense was taken. That board is my pronesurf foil board. I used it for winging and have since moved back too a bigger board. I just wanted to prove to myself and others it is possible to use "prone board" to wing. Yes its definitely harder but if you can only afford one board and your up for the challenge its possible.
@scnomad36264 жыл бұрын
Hotwire I think the benefit is once you’re on foil that tiny board is a pleasure to whip around; no swing weight. Alan, thank you for the validation that this is possible with a lot of practice.
@Hotwire_RCTrix4 жыл бұрын
@@scnomad3626 Again I am not trying to offend but the ski industry learnt a hard lesson when snowboards came along. Promoting a sport/recreation that is easy is much better for everyone. For that to happen the tools need to be realistic for everyone.
