The longer I've been collecting, the more I appreciate the hidden gems. I love my pelikan and my sailor, but there's a definite charm to things like a noodler's ahab that I had to tinker with and tune, but still brings me me joy when I use it even 15 years later.

Thanks for the vid. I’m a huge fan of the Wing Sung 630. I already have all three colours in the original cigar shaped 630’s, including the gold nibs and they were all excellent straight out of the box. I’m waiting on my cigar shaped blue translucent 630 in the turquoise to arrive and after seeing this video I’m going to cave and get the red flat top! I agree with other posters that the steel nib is very unattractive but it writes very well. More like a very smooth, juicy, western medium. The gold nibs however are gorgeous. The heartbeat nibs is different to others in my collection, the standard medium nibs copied the Montblanc design except they replaced the 4810 with their inception date. The nibs also come in a plain version without the scroll work. All are very smooth with a nice bounce, but they tend to have a little more feedback than I prefer. This can easily be corrected with mylar / micromesh or a nibmeister. They are outstanding pens and I have to say over the last month I’ve been using them more than my Montblanc 149.
@fountainpentherapy9 ай бұрын
I am just curious about a comparison. I have been wondering if the gold nib was worth buying. Some have said that the difference is minimal.
@LisaPottinger9 ай бұрын
@@fountainpentherapy That hasn’t been my experience. However, the writing experience depends on the nib that you buy as there are several variations. I would say that generally the gold nibs are softer, with more bounce and more feedback. Very much like Sailor nibs. The gold standard medium nib is softer than the standard fine steel, which is much smoother with minimal feedback. I have a 14k gold broad heartbeat nib that has an architect quality to it and you can really push the tines. It’s not a flex nib but it’s pretty close. The line variation is amazing for a broad nib, almost comparable to my Pilot 912 FA nib. The writing experience with these nibs are different to the standard Bock / Jowo nibs that are ubiquitous in the fountain pen world. In terms of value I’m not sure the gold nibs are worth the additional cost because the steel nibs are so good but I was curious to compare the gold nib version with my Montblanc 149. The standard gold nib unit for about £100 is pretty good value compared to other gold nibs you can buy in the UK. Hope that helps.

I bought the non-transparent version in February as a gift for my own birthday. I thought it was wonderful. I chose the flat top and it seemed better than the cigar shape. Besides, this flat design solves that problem of it looking too much like the Montblanc 149. I ended up putting the same Oxblood ink! But I've already put Kon-peki for a change. It was the highest price I paid for a new pen but it was worth it. What I do know about jun lai, is that it is the real company that produces these 6** series pens from Wingsung, which is a brand of the Hero group. On the negative side, I think it's just that it's impossible to put the pen inside Diamine's 30ml bottles.
@fountainpentherapy9 ай бұрын
But the inking problem is not the pen its Diamine's fault.
@LisaPottinger8 ай бұрын
@@fountainpentherapy I have a lot of pens that can’t fit into the Diamine 30ml bottles but there are easy solutions for this. Using an inkmiser, blunt syringe fill by removing the section, or using an inkwell. I have bought so many of the large 80ml Diamine ink bottles that there’s no way I’ll finish them all. The smaller 30ml bottles enables lots of ink experimentation without being saddled with an excessive ink collection that you’ll never finish. The 30ml bottles are also incredibly cheap compared to other inks while maintaining excellent quality and colour diversity. As a Brit I feel the need to defend the honour of the UK’s best ink producer😉

The Wing Sung #8 is my favourite of the big 3 Chinese steel #8's. I found it had a bit of bounce to it, almost like a gold nib. I do wish they engraved them better though. Vincenzo, nice review and agree. Didn't even know there was a flat top version. This indeed feel like a quality fountain pen. Just received my cigar shaped version (AliX turn around to Australia is now less than a week and half of that time is in Australia) and was pleasantly surprised as well that there is a small converter like container full of lubricant included in the package. It writes exceedingly well, is well made and worth every penny of my AUD$50 I spent on it. The instructions in English might have been useful, but I get the drift. Can't say I got the additional extra shim.

Fair review. It's on my pondering list now. What bothers me about WinSung, Yong Sheng, Jun Lai is the lack of information about the brands. What's the reason for 3 different brand names, as they obviously all come from the HERO Company of Shanghai. In general all these chinese brands keep general information about themselves, their product lines, upcoming novelties and the like that close to their vests that I got the feeling those are top government secrets. It seems to be a cultural thing. What keeps me still away from pulling the trigger right away is the fact that all suppliers of that pen became members of my "black sheep" list. During the 3 yrs I'm using Ali, many vendors easily made it on this list. There are various reasons a seller can hit it. Evasive, useless or even no answers, late shipping (because they don't have stock, simply passing the order to a stock keeping dealer, working on a commission basis only but never mention the real leadtime - a buyer get this info when the money has been sent) and many more. Now prices on Ali have been raised significantly but the sometimes lousy service and the missing respect for foreign customers will continue.Well, just my own experiences.

----- Try lubricating the cap thread with a bit of talcum powder, as you used to do with slide rules for micrometric and fluid cursor movements.
