Obviously! I am a black person, and honestly people who do tutorials need to learn that if you do a tutorial on skin shading you should learn all skins tones in 1 tutorial, instead of one mais tutorial for white people, and then second ones for dark skin tones.

The thing with darker skin tone is it's harder to show form with shadow, its better to show form mostly with with reflective light

Yea, same principles, but a few key differences. Darker skin reflects, so you gotta focus more on forming highlights than shadows. It also reflects colour alot better, so bounce light will be more noticeable. Also, hues have to be cooler when you're going darker, or else the skin will look green, instead of brown. Following the same principles could work, but it'd look more like light skin with the brightness turned down, instead of actual dark skin. Edit- I didn't learn any of this, until I actually started painting dark skin. It was a fun experience.

This is the first time a lesson tells me "Hey, dark stuff don't get as intense shadows because they're already pretty dark." Which sounds so logical when mentioned but I was the kind of people that when coloring a black object would go for the blackest black possible to make the shadow even if it looked weird as hell, so thank you for opening mi eyes lol

For all you interested, your go to must be: 1. Pick the base colour. 2. For the shadow you go a little bit more saturated and closer to purple. (To the right in the color picker, down in the hue picker) 3. For the lights, you go less saturated and closer to yellow. (To the left in color picker and up in hue picker) 4. You also need a reddish tone in the transition zones in cheeks, ears and fingers. All in all, from light to shadows, the color picker must go in kind of an inverted C shaped path.

@@Faerytech You're right. I didn't express it correctly. That's where the inverted C shape comes to play. Transition from light to shadow goes more saturated. Shadow itself is less saturated and colder. Of course it depends on the lighting you're working with.

@@Faerytech it’s also important for your shadows to match the ambient light of the scene! shadows are commonly blue because the sky is blue and that is the ambient light around you, but they usually reflect whatever color you’re surrounded by-think, like, the color of the environment ‘fills’ the space that light can’t reach.

The way I shade skin is more like a mix between the two. Usually I pick a color palette for shadows and light up-front. Say, if it's a daylight, colors are more warmer tones, so brown and dark brown for shadows and light beige and even lighter yellow for lights. I like to add shading with layers. 1st layer is cel shading in brown (in this example of palette I gave before) usually 30% opacity (that depends of how reflective the texture is) in multiply. I copy and paste the exact shading on a new layer, changing color to dark brown, changing opacity to 15% on shade mode of the layer and I blur the edges like it was soft shading. 2 more layers like that and shading is done. Similarly, I make lighting. I honestly really like the results. It's a nice mix between soft and cel shading :D

So growing up I really loved art and drawing but I had some mean art teachers tell me never to use black ink to ink my drawings because it looked to “harsh” and “not natural” and “cartoony.” Turns out my natural style was just cell shading and not the soft style. I am still salty about it. Let people have their unique style! Especially with the invention of ai art, I think an emphasis on different and unique art styles will be even more important. I’m embracing my natural style of art again and I don’t give af what anyone else thinks about it because I like it and that’s what’s important when creating art. Because if an artist doesn’t even like their own work than what’s the point? Art should be about self expression not just an aesthetic contest imho.

0:30 wait people really say that? One of the first characters I ever made, I gave him skin that was darker than my own (I'm white but have slightly tanned skin because of sun exposure). That sentence surprised me a bit but I guess people are used to grabbing a "skin colored" pencil and just going at it, and most digital artists start out with traditional tools. Even in traditional art, there's a nuance to it and personally I prefer to use two or three distinct colors in a similar hue for skin. I had to do that with my own skin because growing up, the pencil that was similar to "standard" white skin wasn't as yellow or tan as my natural skin tone (instead of like, the light peachy pinkish cream, which matches my sister's skin more). Digital art luckily doesn't have that disadvantage but honestly I would also point out that even in similar skin color groups, there is quite a bit of variation and I also like to shade skin in a redder or orange color (unless it's extreme light) to hint at undertones which helps distinguish characters for me. Also the way you shade or highlight things like (natural) lips and nails in some styles, if you're going more realistic, can drastically change the undertone of the skin, such as the choice to make it more pink or more tan.

You said that this technique can work with just about every skin tone. Could it work for something a bit more fantasy? Like, purple, grey and such? Also, how would you blush those types of skin?

In regards to the red edge on the shadows, the hue of it would be a more warmer version of the skin shade (i.e. for grey it would be a darker and slightly pinkish grey). For blush, it would be kinda a mix of the skin color and the color of blood. How much of one color is mixed w the other to make that color depends on how saturated and dark both the blood and skin are. The less saturated and more light the skin is, the more the blood's color will show(If the blood color is more saturated and less lighter than the skin color.) If it helps, you could do the skin using a human skintone that is identical/nearly identical when set to grayscale to the fantasy skin color and shift the hue to the fantasy skin color after shading.

From what i understand its used to add a bit of spice to the shadows. The mentioned places absorb more light i think. You can check it better by standing in a dark room, turning on a flashlight and pressing it onto different parts of the body, like your hands, ears or face (not into ur eyes pls). Remeber to have a mirror close. I am no expert, so do research it a bit by yourself.
