Summer is coming. It's time to test out wingsurfing gear. This small 600cm2 Gong Ypra s-s race hydrofoil was previously too fast for weaving through the ice, but now there's enough open water to give it a test.
Vihdoin jäät alkavat väistymään ja pääsee koeajamaan paremmin siipisurffaus -välineitä. Nyt testissä Gongin Ypra S-S 600cm2 race kantosiipi eli hydrofoili. Aiemmin talvella tämän nopeus oli liikaa jäiden seassa pujotteluun.
Rider : 79 kg with winter gear wetsuit etc.
Board: Takoon Glide 80L
Wing: Takoon V2 5.5m2
Foil: Gong, mast carbon HM 92cm, pro fuselage, frontwing YpraS-S 600cm2, Veloce H stab 44cm.

Nice video from a really interesting perspective! I think the mast is the limiting factor here: if you bank it at speed, it ventilates. Kitefoilers using thicker masts by some brands know this effect all too well. You can see air bubbles and flow separation below the surface well before all those crashes. There are a few frames (2.21)where you can see air bubbles forming at the mast-fuselage connection, maybe because of the square shape of the fuselage - that is really hard to control because that turbulence will also disturb the stab.

It took me a while to notice those underwater bubbles in the spot you mentioned. I'm sure it's very much as you say. Gong's foils have wings and a mast attached to the fuselage with eight screws, which surely also cause turbulence. Additionally, the junctions between the fuselage and the wings aren't entirely smooth. And the mast could be stiffer.

This strange. It look not that fast for it’s size, i mean the higest speed is good but not exeptionnal, maybe need a smaller stab, and thinner mast. Also the overall speed seams pretty low like cruising at 25/26. I don’t know if the gong foil are good for racing.

Thank you for sharing your impression on this foil man ! Your level is sick I’m new on the Hypra S - M. I use a fluid H 38 stab and I’m having a lot of problems to actually feel stable and ride it properly. Do you have any tips ? Are you also using this stab ? Thank you man, keep pushing
@wingsurffi
@wingsurffi Жыл бұрын
Fluid HA 38 is quite small and unstable, especially if you don't have much experience yet. I tried the Ypra S-M with Veloce HA 40 stabilizer, but it felt too small and unstable and was challenging to ride fast in gusty winds. After that, I switched to the Fluid HA 42 stabilizer, and it was comfortably stable and easy to ride. Lately, I've been using the freestyle 41 stabilizer, which is more lively than Fluid 42 and great for wave riding. The freestyle stabilizers are slightly thicker, so even in smaller waves, they provide decent lift and stability, despite having a shorter fuselage than others. Short fuselage allows for tighter turns. If you are looking for more stable ride with Ypra S-M you should be looking for something bigger than Fluid HA 38 for stabilizer.

Looks good. Considering Gong, but heard alot about how their fuse to frontwing connection is less than perfect. Loose screws etc, even if they are using the correct screw-order. And also i feel it would be a horror story claiming factoryfaults etc, when there is noone to call and you just have a contact form.. Could take ages to come to an agreement if there is a dissagreement... What is your experience?
@wingsurffi
@wingsurffi Жыл бұрын
It's true that the connection between the frontwing and the fuselage could be better, but at my weight (less than 80 kg) and with the relatively small foils I use (600-1000cm2), I haven't noticed any looseness in the connection that would affect performance. I also don't jump. The problem was probably bigger a few years ago. I have several Gong boards and aluminum and carbon fiber foils. I have never had any problems with the foils - they are very durable. The latest pro stabs will definitely break if you hit something or jump hard because they are so thin, but that is the price of lightness and thinness. On one inflatable board, the foil box was glued crookedly, and Gong's support responded the same day and paid for the board's return and sent a new one in exchange. On another inflatable board, there was an ugly glue job, and when I commented on it, they gave me a discount on the price. So I have only had good experiences with Gong's support.

Hi, 79 kg + 5,5 m. I dont understand how you are riding with ypra s 600 ? It seems incredible ???? The wind, how mu ch knots ?
@wingsurffi
@wingsurffi Жыл бұрын
The wind was 0 - 23 knots. High aspect foils generate lift really well despite their small size. This Ypra S-S foil is quite high aspect. I would estimate that I'll need about 15-16 knots or more to get airborne on this 5.5 m2 wing. With the Ypra M 800cm2 foil that I'm using more often, I can get airborne on a 7m2 wing at 10 knots. The original Ypra M is extremely high aspect and generates great lift. Less than 10 knots I use Fluid HA 1000cm2. The key is a well gliding board and flat water.

@@wingsurffi ok, thank you. Your response is very informative for me. I'm still riding with Gong foil regular (curve and veloce) + takoon v2 4m, 5'5 (like u) and 7m. But when i 'il get the level (for the moment i have got middle level) i'll passed at high ratio. The différence with u : the spot where i ride are not really flat !!! (i'm from Reunion Island in Indian Ocean with a lot of swell and choppy) So maybe I will have to adapt my high ratio quiver to these conditions. What do you think ? PS : where do you come from ? Your country ?

In swell and choppy conditions I need about 2-4 knots more wind. Those who use small HA foils tends to use also a size or two bigger hand wings. That's the downside in HA foils. Glide V2 should be great board 👍. Robert Stehlik use 730 cm2 HA front wing in swell and he is probably 15 kg heavier than me. In this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXulp4CBbqiLhsU

@wingsurffi
@wingsurffi Жыл бұрын
I tried the Veloce 40 in the past and found it too difficult to control the flight altitude. The Freestyle Stab 41 feels well-balanced, but I've only ridden it at speeds below 24 knots / 45 kmh, so I'm not sure how it behaves at higher speeds. However, the freestyle 41 feels quite slow and draggy with the Ypra S-M, so it might not reach high speeds even with the S-S (at least with my skills).

Have you noticed that Gong has introduced the intermediate size YpraS MS 700cm2. My friend, who weighs just over 80kg, is considering it, and so am I, especially after I hit the rocks with the size M while wave foiling. However, it might be better to wait for the potential new race foils next summer. I hope there's something coming which removes the need of 8 screws and a bit loose front wing connection.
