Wingnut Wings scale model kits - are they really that good?

Over recent years there's been a lot of hype about expensive Wingnut Wings model kits. Are they worth it? I took the plunge and started building my first ever WNW kit, and there are some pretty eye-opening results - it's not like building a standard, out of the box scale model kit. I discuss the quality of WNW plastic, decals, construction, printed references and instructions, and whether these really make the kits worth the cost.
Special thanks to HobbyLink Japan, who provided this kit for review. If you like the look of the kit, it is available here: shop.hlj.com/2I6KIYo

Here's my 2 cents..... As long as these kits are accurately detailed, come with instructions that have been well researched, contain resin/photoetched parts that are usually found as aftermarket and are free of fit issues (including ejector pin marks in places where they shouldn't be) I don't have no problem spending a little extra cash on kits such as these. However, I DO NOT want to end up like I did with that Trumpeter 1/32 F-105D kit years ago where I spent $100 (US) on the kit and had to spent nearly $130 more on aftermarket accessories, most notably to fix erroneous shape issues! ANY kit that costs around $100 +/- in my opinion should be 100% accurate and you should NOT have to buy a plethora of pricey resin detail sets to fix it. As long as everything is fine in that respect I don't mind paying that price.
@geoff2911
@geoff2911 4 жыл бұрын
sadly that is what most kits involve and yes that includes higher end kits and yes that includes Tamiya you spend a lot of money on a kit you should not have to buy P E or resin parts to make it accurate or even in some sad cases look good include all the so called extras ( that should be part of the kit to begin with ) and price it accordingly people are tired of having to buy after market items and if it continues manufacturers are going to pay for it in loss of sales as phayzyre105 says have it all together and ill pay the higher price if not your going to start losing sales if they have not already i have not bought kits for these exact reasons
@patricpeters9716
@patricpeters9716 4 жыл бұрын
You don't HAVE to buy aftermarket upgrade parts. My philosophy is that if I was meant to add extra stuff, it would be included in the box from the manufacturer. Should I add resin seats to my Monogram B29 or Tamiya 1/32 Mosquito? No, because they're not needed and the plastic kit is just fine as it is.

I’m a Huge Wingnut Wings Fan. I have several kits I’ve collected and build them when I can...the manuals are almost collectors items themselves...such a nice compliment to an already impressive product. The main reason I’ve built up a collection is that I’ve noticed in the past, if you wait until you finish a kit before buying the next one you want...it is sold out! Then they sell higher on the secondary market. But I want to build mine eventually. They are pricey but you do get what you pay for. Wonderful review and thanks for posting. Kind Regards, Pat

An enjoyable review. I love your comparison to taking a test in your favourite subject. I get it! 3 years ago I bought Eduard photoetch and also scratchbuilt parts for a Trumpeter 1/35th steam locomotive. Took over 3 months, I did things never before attempted and think it my best work so far. Over 750 parts. I'll keep your enthusiastic recommendation in mind. First, a few motorcycles, 1/12 Tamiya JPS Lotus, and such. Cheers, mate! Thanks!

WOW, We are on similar tangents my friend...just started building a WNW SE5a first of September, my first Wingnut kit. Mouldings are superb, details screaming to be embellished, instructions like a small novel, individually packed sprue trees and box work top notch. I agree they make you WANT to build it better than other kits. They lend themselves to super detailing and it seems to be the norm with those that build them. It lives up to the hype in my mind. I was slightly disappointed in the engine sprue trees leaving excess on mating surfaces when cut off, but it was easily cleaned away. I found the instructions difficult to follow as not numbered steps, lots of pictures/diagrams and mine didn’t read left to right. You really have to pay attention to what you are doing in the instructions or you can bypass parts, steps easily. They are lovely model kits, second to none
@DavesModelWorkshop

2kidsnosleep totally agree. Those instructions, while beautiful to look at and utterly comprehensive, aren’t the easiest to actually follow and methodically build from. Looking forward to hearing how we both progress at the same time mate!

Just do it. 😉 Honestly I had trepidation myself, but once I got into it, they are simple. The instructions and engineering of the fit makes them go together flawlessly. And you can go over the top with extra aftermarket stuff or just do a simple build out of the box. There’s enough inside the box for a great build regardless, and I find buying ‘extras’ unnecessary. The only stumbling block for me sometimes is the rigging, but with EZ Line and a good super glue and accelerator, it really gets easy.

Wingnut Wings models are some of the best quality models ever made! I have built a number of them and have never had a fit issue or needed to use filler. May be why they cost so much but I guess it depends on what value you put on your sanity and piece of mind if they are worth it...;)

David Olie like you I have come back to model making after a very long break, and I have trouble getting my head around everything now available, the range and manufacturers of kits is enormous, after market parts, paint products and accessories, air brushes, and the amount of money you can spend on the hobby is just insane, but I am so glad I decided to start again, not just for something to occupy my forced retirement due to illness, but for the satisfaction of turning out a model so detailed it is fantastic, I have to spend my pension on something and at least I have something to show for it.

The only real trouble with WNW is that they go out of print so fast - the price on eBay are amazing. The more I model the more I think a quality kit is worth it. Actually it's easier to say that about WNW. Unless you want to build Eduard in 1/48 - which I think is a poor selection for WWI planes which were tiny compared to the second war fighters - and Eduard is good for a heart attacks or two - the only real alternative is Roden. Roden will try your patience and they are not cheap either. But they have a much better selection. Note this though: Italeri has reboxed 1/32 versions of the very good Academy Camel and Nieuport 17 (no Triplane yet - hope that follows). Less complex than WNW or Roden, but cheap and extremely good kits. Des Delatorre at WorldWarI Aircraft - the site required for any biplane fan - has built them both and they both look great. (Mind you - Des builds scratch often - he doesn't need the simplicity.) Judging from their splendid Swordfish, Tamiya could give WNW a run for the money if they built bipes. Their aircraft out in the last five years have been world beaters in both 1/32 and 1/38 - and the early 2000s 1/48s (like the P-47 and Corsair) remain splendid kits. Their armor has also become top notch in the last few years. (They're going the opposite direction as Dragon.) Fabulous company.

I think Wingnut Wings if *relatively* expensive, represented reasonable value considering what they were, but more importantly were affordable - up until about 18 months ago. Since they stopped selling direct from NZ shipping included, and in USD was a far better deal for those in the USA BTW, the price has skyrocketed. Once you factor in shipping on top of that, well suffice to say WNW are now way out my league. I did like that they were 1:32 considering how small WW I types are compared to modern jets or even WW II fighters when scaled down for modelling. Instead I compromise with Eduard Profipacks and Special Editions in 1:48 for my WW I types as well now, and have to say I'm very happy with them generally.

Thanks for your comment. I will say that the wingnut Wings stuff is at the pointy end of the spectrum - its expensive and hyper-detailed, and it is a bit daunting - I've been modelling for decades and this is the first time I've attempted one. Don't be put off by it, there are thousands of more accessible kits out there to get back into the hobby with, that are cheaper and less fiddly and (quite frankly) more fun. Try something else, and if you get bitten by the modelling bug again, then you can make the emotional and financial investment into a Wingnut Wings build! :)

I won't sugarcoat it, you do have to be in the right headspace for one of these. I'm not being elitist, and and every modeller can build a WNW kit, but to actually enjoy the build you have to be ready to be methodical and detail obsessed!

I have bought a bunch of different sizes of monofilament for the rigging, and a jig to ensure the wings are correctly aligned with the right dihedral. But, having come back to the hobby after many years (pre resin and PE aftermarket) I’ve been working up through straight out of the box kits through my first resin and PE-upgraded kits. I’m currently very carefully going through the Great Wall Hobby 1/35 BMW R75 + sidecar + Squadron 2000 resin upgrade set, and it’s a challenging build. Next stop is the venerable Tamiya 25pdr + Quad tractor + a very extensive upgrade set.
@DavesModelWorkshop
@DavesModelWorkshop 5 жыл бұрын
Alastair, that 25pdr and Quad Tractor is going to build up a treat. They are indeed venerable, those kits are ancient - but the angular, utilitarian Quad is a stunning subject, it will be cool to build!

I built them ages ago. In fact they were the first models I ever used an airbrush on (I have a Harder and Steenbeck Infinity CR Plus now - lovely AB). I remember cutting masks for where the windscreen wipers would go, laying down a misty coat of Desert Yellow, them removing the masks and putting a very light coat down. The challenge for this build is that all the moulded-on detail on the 25 pdr gun trail is going to be shaved off and replaced with tiny, fiddly bits of PE

Wingnut Wings is the state of the art in plastic modeling. They’ve chosen to focus on WWI aircraft so they have few competitors,but all the other major manufacturers need to up their game. Hasegawa,Trumpeter,and the others don’t come close,especially when it comes to researching their subjects,these guys don’t screw up on dimensions and detail like Trumpeter.

@DavesModelWorkshop 5 жыл бұрын
You can totally see that extra level of research attention in just the instructions. No other manufacturer includes so many period photographs of the originals, it really is evidence of the research that WNW puts into it. I agree with you entirely FW1421.

I went to their website, and wow was I impressed. This isn't a company that is putting model kits out just because. This is a company that is passionate about what they do and what their customers do. I'm just getting back into the hobby after being out of it for a few years, but what I've noticed is model kits have gone down quality wise. Too many companies are building "toy" model kits. Wingnut is what a model kit should be. Yes they are expensive, but you get what you pay for. A Wingnut kit would be one that I would be proud to display, the fact that they sell nice wood bases for their models is testament to the fact that they are serious about their models. They want them to be displayed, not treated like a toy. When I get my skills back, I want to attempt one.

RC Flyer Have you actually built one? I thought that at first, but having built two and a growing collection of them on my shelf, I think they are worth every penny. Of course it all depends on your budget, and it’s all personal preference, but a $79 kit starting price point isn’t absurd IMO. I own several Roden kits as well, which are about half the price, and while they are decent enough, not even close in quality. To each his own.

Secondlie the younger generation does not want to build models they want to play their xbox and their playstation they do not have the attention span or the money to build a model so my question is am I right in my kind of right or my flat out Wrong ? I will say I noticed that skill model building is more popular in Europe and Asian countries but in America I believe if I'm not mistaken it is a dying hobby.

When they began, it was a great point of difference that they only did WWI subjects, they really stood out from their competitors by doing that. I think they single-handedly caused a helluva lot of people to make WWI subjects who never would have otherwise. It seems they ran into taxation problems in NZ, and never quite recovered. WNW did have plans to start producing WWII subjects, like their famous Lancaster which was almost into production when they folded. Would they have survived if they had more WWII offerings? Who knows, it seems like there were never any problems with sales for their WWI kits, it might have been a more systemic problem than just the choice of subjects.
