Dave's Model Workshop

Following on from my first video about Wingnut Wings, this week in Part 2 I continue with the engine and fuselage of the WNW Fokker E.IV build. The extraordinary detail just keeps on coming - the radial engine is a little work of art - but I do encounter some issues with the fit of the fuselage halves. I will admit, some of the issues are just due to me ;)
Special thanks to HobbyLink Japan, who provided this kit for review. If you like the look of the kit, it is available here: shop.hlj.com/2I6KIYo

Superb work from a master. The engine looks fantastic, you have brought out the exquisite detail from the kit and as for those machine guns, a labour of love I'm sure. Brilliant job so far, keep up the excellent work!

Nice engine work. It's gonna look good under that metal skirt. Love the looks of that kit. My issue is space, so I mostly do 1/72. The kit quality is so good I want to get that 1/35 F2. Felexstowe kit they came out with. Heard it's a monster!!
@DavesModelWorkshop
@DavesModelWorkshop 5 жыл бұрын
I think the Felixstowe is 1/32, not 1/35? But yeah, it would be impressively large - where could you display that???

The sink mark in the Maxim is the rear of the fusee cover. These got dented occasionally, probably just some rough handling by the ground crew.

I am enjoying watching this build, I even liked when you chastised yourself for the “rookie” error with the rubber band. I think everyone who attempts something difficult like model making knows the feeling of making silly mistakes. I would also add that making and correcting our stuff ups add to the fun, after all if it was easy, anybody could do it. I think there needs to be a saying for this, how about “Starting a project is optional, stuffing up is mandatory”.

Nice kit (even though I'm a car modeller). I would assume the dogleg on the top of the fuselage is to accommodate the one hole behind the cockpit that is off center, keeping the 2 holes centered on the seam & not locking one half into the mold.

Two potential issues to putting the fuselage seams on the corners vs the flats. First, the required tapered end would be very difficult to keep straight when connecting sprues are cut away and cleaned up - any sanding would wear away the corner both away from and "down" along the mating surface, resulting in a wavy, gapped join. Also, clamping the mating surfaces together would be difficult, pressure along the two mating surfaces would be "misaligned," tending to cause the fuselage sides to splay outward, causing the mating surfaces to not sit flat - they would touch on the inside and have a small gap at the exterior corners, which unfortunately is the part that is visible on the finished model. Connecting at the corners would essentially require tolerances in manufacturing and building that I don't think you can achieve in practical terms.
@DavesModelWorkshop
@DavesModelWorkshop 5 жыл бұрын
Michael, can I just say that this is the most considered and rational comment I have ever received on my KZbin channel? Thank you. Reading your comment, I think you have perfectly answered why they have designed it the way they have, and not my way. Agreed, the tolerances would be tiny - any sanding would stuff it up as you mention. Thank you sir. Dave

Dave-do you have a sprue cutter? Haven't seen you use one. Available across the pond from Hobby Lobby for US $5. You might also try automotive glazing putty for small filling jobs; easier to work with than plastic filler. Just be sparing! Don't build planes, but what you do is amazing!!! Picking up tips for my automotive interests! L

Hi Paul, thanks for the comments. I don't use a sprue cutter, I use a pair of surgical scissors I've had for decades. They do a pretty good job, I've never seen the need to upgrade (although I hear they are good?)

My 5 year old daughter wanted to help with this kit over the weekend - that would have been the equivalent of letting a pet elephant near it!!! :D I've got her working on a 1/48 Airfix Gloster Gladiator instead. It may end up pink. (And there's nothing wrong with that.)

Dave's Model Workshop When I was 5 my dad and I built a 1/72 Matchbox Beaufighter. The torpedo bomber version. It turned out gloss Black, full of fingerprints, Silver torpedos and red missiles. Still one of my fondest memories, 3 long winter evenings at the kitchen table covered in old newspapers and the smell of Humbrol enamel paint.

Extremely, overly expensive despite the quality. I can buy a .90 size radio control Albatros kit (the accesories and the fabric to cover it) for the price of one or two of those plastic planes. More fun building real wood and canvas airplane, lots of scale detail to get creative, and real flying airplane than that static, nonsense overly expensive and overrated kits.
