This Wings team under Todd is legitimately a good team. We limited high danger scoring chances and everyone is chipping in right now. Gus, Kasper, and Senko all had two points. Thats 7 straight, let’s enjoy the moment boys. I have to give Kaner more praise. The way he slows the game down with his patience is impressive. Dude is a hockey sorcerer.

Sticking with Blashill and changing to Lalonde made one thing clear: Yzerman wanted coaches with experience with youngsters, to set the path to the future with the new comers from GR. The initial plan was not the best. Time has passed and we added a ton of veterans with a lot of experience. The change to a veteran coach, who can deal with superstar egos (not to mention the presence of hair), was the first of the last pieces to the puzzle. And, IMO, the test and usage of Veleno, Kasper and Johansson are 100% under Yzerman's demand. It's working. And don't get surprised if Burgers get traded before the end of the season.

@@randombutrelevant every human has an Ego. I don't think it's too soon to say that the new coach is meshing better with our players' Egos. Simply stating ego doesn't automatically mean big ego. One thing is for certain, red wings have been looking overall good & its not crazy to think, based on what we've seen, they can't battle & sneak into a playoff spot. LGRW!
@billjohansson8814 күн бұрын
@@randombutrelevant @hunterfisher5577 Lalonde has a history of coaching lower leagues where it is more common to find youngsters. So yes, in a way he is an experienced 'youngsters' coach and has always been a winner in the lower leagues. Lalonde was a good solution for something that needed to change when Blashill reached his far limit. Lalonde is considered by players to be a player coach and is usually very appreciated by his own players. Lalonde was also a team player who took the blame instead of S.Y and the owners. He was the person who was designed to be the "scapegoat" when things did not go as planned. In his three years he managed to lead the "team" forward every year, except the last year. S.Y believes that he has a team that can make the playoffs, I do not share that view. I think Todd has the qualities to squeeze more out of players for his experience, i.e. to say play 'f' hockey peer say. Very few players can deny that he has experience of what they actually mean on the idea regardless of the system used. Lalonde does not really have the experience to adapt every year to a new roster, he repeatedly says "we are not built that way". Lalonde's mission was to take the team to the playoffs and his system does not fit the team he had ((a bridge too far)). Since he often plays on the statistics version of his system, his statement that the underlying numbers ensure that we would win and so on. Todd has a slightly more straightforward view of the matter, the one of two teams that gets to 3 goals first usually wins more than they lose. Ego, everyone has an ego and there is much that says that this is a big obstacle. Kane is a good example that some say he has an ego, he criticizes his former coach (Lalonde) most recently in public. There is nothing else to look at the matter than ego that controls this. Valeno & Raz were the two who didn't stop playing regardless of the result not going the team's way. Kane was one of the biggest culprits in stopping playing and it shows in his absurd negative body language and how he behaves in all three zones. today with a new coach and new conditions, he has a different body language than before, how is this not ego. In three years, most of us as Fans will be tired of Todd's way of expressing himself if he doesn't change from year to year and the editions that RW consists of. The advantage I see is that many of today's players will not be present next year, although the question is more what will S.Y sign on the open market that are not the usual old over age Vet's that cost more than they are worth. I think most of them are intended to be included in a future trade, without Larks, Raz and Mo. In the RW pipe, Patty is not included as a player and I base that on the fact that he does not have the mentality to be a winner, it is more JT who is that type of player but his age does not fit the RW timeline. None of the bigger names goalies (both) or ASP and C who are in GR are included in a deal with Buffalo, they need Vet's and the question is who or which in today's RW can be included there. Buffalo's Fan base will go nuts if the value is not more as most people tend to overestimate their own value of players in the squads regardless of team. The question will simply be how much S.Y and the owners want a player and what is the price for that deal. We fans already know which names are on the open market this summer, however, I don't think S.Y will land any of them (most will probably stay). I will not start staying up and following RW live just because they have won 7 straight. It's the whole thing that makes me still boycott the product as it is put on the ice and that includes how each player behaves in the past and present, that's my "ego" and I'm not sacrificing my sleep for a shitshow.

A coach's personality does get reflected in certain ways by the players. "This is the quietest locker room I've ever been around". Yep, and your personality and approach to coaching these players wasn't gonna help in the long run. Lalonde was lucky to have Perron and Co last year to play that counter to his dull personality. Now we have a coach whose personality and style fits this team. Just playing f'ing hockey!!!
@bradmaguire961114 күн бұрын
They have 2 lines that can score and a third line that can get you one point every other game, that's the recipe for being a good team, this roster is not gonna be a defensive juggernaut but they don't need to be if they can keep that same production, and yes i know 50% on the pp is unstainable but it's their constant pressure in the offensive zone on 5v5 that is leading to these opportunities so expect their pp numbers to go down but their 5v5 goals will go up. I'll say it again for the people who don't want to believe it, mclellen is detroits paul maurice hire, there's a reason he is the winningest coach in San Jose history, he maximizes the players potential.

I think the real credit in the new system under Todd is tapping into that team contribution by committee as well as the top line producing. Hell even on defense he's not just keeping Seider and Edvinsson as the only pair that's sustainable and while id say it's not perfect but it's getting wins and that to me is somehow remarkable with this D core.

Just think if Kasper had a scoring touch, the guy can do so much else on the ice. Relentless along the boards, digging out the puck, and making timely passes in space. Still needs to work on that 47.7 FO win % So far for that 2022 draft Marco is looking good justifying his selection in the top 10.
@padgematic14 күн бұрын
Agreed! He’ll get better on draws if he stays at C but I think he’s looking so good on the wing with less responsibility. It’s a shame we haven’t had enough performance at C to do this sooner. Young guys getting minutes with talent is so much better for development than having to carry a fourth line. Hopefully, in time Marco or Danielson can be that 2C and the other can play wing.

The rest of January is more favorable to them than the teams around them. But the season gets harder the rest of the way. February is a bit harder even though the break happens right before taking on Minny twice. March is a step or two tougher. If they make the playoffs, April is where they will legitimately earn it. Carolina, 2x Florida, Dallas, New Jersey, Tampa, and Toronto with St Louis and Montreal sprinkled in. EDIT: Oh, and that nine games in April is over 17 days...

I don’t think Petterson is worth 11.6M. Not in today’s market. That contract might look good a few years down the road but he’s a light frame 30 goal scorer. He’s not doing himself any favors this year as his production sucks. Larkin, Raymond, and DeBrincat are blowing his numbers out of the water. I’d be more willing to take a flyer on Cozens while giving up a lot less. I still think we should target Bowen Byrum and build out the blue line. We’ve got Kasper learning the ropes and Danielson in the wings. We may not have a 2C/3C problem next season. Let the season play out. We aren’t going deep in any playoff run with the defense as it stands.

I believe this came down to McLellan being told by Yzerman to just make the trade baits look good. He told them to just play and "we'll coach you as you played". Well, isn't that a marvel to not restrict players from their tendencies. Under McLellan, the D doesn't pinch if they're playing against the opposing team's top line. The D pairs are all entrusted with responsibilities. It wasn't about trusting them. It was just letting them play fuckin hockey. Every single player looks like what their ceilings would be. Case in point? Berggren, Johamsson amd fucking Gustafsson. And look....a GOOD FUCKIN TEAM. Yzerman saw it on paper and knew it from scouting. It was always the coaching that was the issue even last year

Cat has been playing better in the d zone even under lalonde and razors defensive game has improved under lalonde, might not like it but have to give lalonde credit for that, but I think lalondes constant harping about poor defense was a self fulfilling prophecy, clearly they were afraid to take chances and it caused them to always play on their heels instead of being the aggressor. There's still going to be some bad games, bad losses, but confidence is the difference e between a good team and a bottom dweller.

There's no such thing as a soft schedule, see losses to Ottawa and san Jose last year, a win is a win, and they've beaten 4 teams that are ahead of them in the standings in this stretch, those are never gimme games especially when they're in your division. And yes the pp is unsustainable, but people are failing to see that the wings are getting more pp than their opponents because they are forcing the other team on their heels, whether they continue to get pps or not is irrelevant, they are doing to other teams what was being done to them before mclellen showed up, and that's why they are scoring more and will continue to score.
