Joe understands the difference between playing quickly and playing tastefully, as you said its all about melody, not the number of notes you can play per second.

Early life Satriani was born in Westbury, New York, the descendant of Italian immigrants. His paternal grandparents were from Piacenza and Bobbio, while his maternal grandparents were from Bari. He was inspired to play guitar at age 14, after hearing of the death of Jimi Hendrix. He has been said to have heard the news during football practice, where he then announced to his coach that he was quitting to become a guitarist. In 1974, Satriani studied music with jazz guitarist Billy Bauer and with reclusive jazz pianist Lennie Tristano. The technically demanding Tristano greatly influenced Satriani's playing. Satriani began teaching guitar, with his most notable student at the time being fellow Long Island native Steve Vai (both also went to the same high school). While he was teaching Vai, he was attending Five Towns College for studies in music. In 1978, Satriani moved to Berkeley, California, to pursue a music career. Soon after arriving in California, he resumed teaching. His students included Kirk Hammett of Metallica, David Bryson of Counting Crows, Kevin Cadogan from Third Eye Blind, Larry LaLonde of Primus and Possessed, Alex Skolnick of Testament, Rick Hunolt (ex-Exodus), Phil Kettner of Lȧȧz Rockit, Geoff Tyson of T-Ride, Charlie Hunter, David Turin, and Eric Kauschen.

Right around the time this was posted, Satch played a local theater and I had the opportunity to see him do this tune, really amusing that the background video included shots of him with hair like yours (along with clips of drag racing). Really amazing how effortless his playing looks, but at that skill level, that's how it goes!

What I really like about Satch is that he writes instrumental SONGS. Most of Via's songs seem to simply be a showcase for his talent to play the guitar, but Joe's songs are much more melodic and as you said, they repeat and come back to the beginning. You could easily add words to many of his songs because they have that sort of flow to them. Thanks for doing Satch, and if I could make a recommendation, I would love to have you do his song BIG BAD MOON. Though I would recommend the studio version as I just haven't found a live version with overly good sound quality yet.

An unsurprisingly good breakdown of how a piece of music actually works - circular motifs that bring you back and resolve everything, to give you that warm, fuzzy feeling. From one of Bach's 24 (not 48) fugues to Close To The Edge.....hasn't changed.....probably never will. "Oh Fil...won't you buy me .....a Mercedes Benz.....?" Just kiddin'...

A well known fact is Joe and Steve Vai went to the same high school, Joe a couple years ahead, but Joe was also Steve's first guitar teacher and they have been friends ever since. Once Steve Vai got his big break being picked up by David Lee Roth for his first solo album after leaving Van Halen he was asked by producers if he knew any other really great talent that should be looked at by the and he suggested they take a look at Joe. So Joe teaches Steve and Steve helps Joe get a break into the industry. That's a cool friendship. Of course they have some similarities but I think Steve's time working for and playing in Frank Zappa's band really influenced his playing to be much more "out there" than Joe's. In my opinion Joe is more melodic than Steve but Steve is a bit more technical than Joe. (As technical as Joe is he admits he writes music that takes him days to learn to play. lol)

Satriani is undoubtedly one of the top guitar players around these days.having Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett as your pupils and to lead those pupils to the success they had certainly shows his ability as a musician. guitar technology with zero action necks, locking nuts and Floyd Rose wang bars gave birth to players like Satriani. he even has his own model of wah pedal and guitar. on closer listening to this track, he sounds like he robbed his own catalogue because it sounds too much like Surfin' With The Alien an absolutely phenomenal track in its own right. i could listen to a few tracks in succession but haven't managed a full album from start to finish. thanks Fil, peace man.

Hi Phil; finally your comment on a song of the greatest player in the world today. Very interesting comments on his sound and ability to own a sound; please work on your pronounciation of his family-name. Your love for Gary Moore is totally shared by me. Of the still living guitarists Joe is the grandmaster. With respect for other fine players, Joe blows them away . If you’ve never seen him play , like in the G-3 concerts, Some people don’t recognise his greatness. I do. This song is just a nice song for interaction with the crowd and true, with elements from surfing with the alien. My personal favourites; Raspberry Jam Delta V and Chrystal Planet. Keep up the good work!

Paul Gilbert once said you learn to " sing " through your guitar ...literally sing the vocals . I can't sing but in my head I can hum or hear the notes and if I apply that to the frets I can sing the parts my vocals could never reach ....learn to sing through your guitar , hit the notes in your head and you can break through a lot of barriers .

Full disclosure, this is one of my two favorite songs along with Always with me, always with you. Great anlyses. I don't mind if you get into some technical stuff and it might be good to demonstrate major and minor chords. It would almost be like a music class. Satch is the current Guitar God in my life. Gilbert comes in a hair behind. At least since Stevie Ray passed. Awesome analysis, the neurological view. Your absolutely right. I'm a healthcare professional that read EEGs. Your setting a neural pathway with the first part of the song, then the journey, and finally back home. Hey Wings of Pegasus, you should react to the Crushing Day tract from Surfing with the Alien album. Satriani takes it to a whole level there.

I got to see Joe during the Super Colassal tour at the House of Blues in Chicago. The opening act was Eric Johnson. It's one of the best concerts I have ever been to. The "show" aspect to Joe's performance and his band were phenomenal. The lights, the movement, even the way he creates his set list all make for an atmosphere that draws you in. Really the only thing I can think of negative about that concert is the contrast between Eric's style and Joe's. As FIL mentions, Joe understands melody, even in the solo sections of his songs. To me, Eric kind of missed this. His solos during his act seemed to boil down to just scales and appergios. If Eric wasn't immediately followed by one of the all-time greatest musicians/guitarists I probably never would have noticed it.

Greatest living guitar player. Now people will argue with you about that but they are wrong. One of his newer songs that has that same kind of guitar that you can sing in your head. It's called 1980. You should check it out. Thanks for giving us some JOE!
