Thanks for the kind words - and especially about my guitar playing! I didn't start taking solos myself until the 90's, but one of the most gratifying moments in my own shows (for me) are when I do step out of the vocal mic up to stage front, and just let my fingers do the thinking. And to the question about autobiographical, yes, definitely autobiographical. I read the article while I was sitting at my mom's dining table (having had to move back in with her because I was so broke), guitar in hand (because I felt I ought to be playing and writing all the time, to prove her trust in me), and the song began to take shape. I was in my early 20's when I wrote it; I couldn't have written it when I was seventeen years old. It's hard to write about painful things when you're going through them, you know? About the "it wasn't weeks and weeks of recording", heck of course it wasn't! When we cut "Society's Child", I was fourteen years old and we were recording onto one of the first 8-track machines in New York. With "Between the Lines" and "At Seventeen", we had 16 tracks, so they broke down like this: - Bass drum (Barry Lazarowitz on drums) - Toms - Hi hat, cymbals - 2 tracks for the percussionist (vibes, guiro, etc, stereo) - My initial guitar part (played live with the studio band) - My overdubbed guitar part (played later because there were nylon parts I wanted to add) - Upright bass (Richard Davis) - 2 tracks for other guitarist(s) (including David Snider on his first session ever; I wanted a guitarist with that excitement. I actually kicked another "premiere" guitarist off the session because he was so snotty about David being nervous) and Sal deTroia. - 2 tracks for woodwinds/brass (Alan Raph and Phil Bodner, playing a chart I'd written and being extremely helpful about anything that wouldn't work) - 2 tracks for the vocals (that was true of the whole album, so since "17" was a single vocal, I had the luxury of singing it several times, then Brooks Arthur and I picking the best lines. Otherwise it was always punch in punch out.) - 2 tracks for effects - a separate track for vocal reverb, because we used a plate, and another track for everything else. If we had 3 available, there'd be a spare "effects" track. So you see, we only had the 16 tracks to work with. And of course, the brilliance of Brooks Arthur as producer/lead engineer, and Larry Alexander as second engineer. If you listen to the UK audiophile vinyl we released recently in conjunction with Sony UK (not meaning to plug, just information), you can hear the HUGE difference between what was created on 8 or 16 track, and then later what was created by artists (including myself) with 24 tracks, and now, what's done in digital. For my mind, you can't beat vinyl, you can't beat tape, and you can't beat a 2" analog tape reel with 8 or 16 tracks on it. Any more, and you begin losing frequencies, warmth, depth, heart. On that note, with "Breaking Silence" (which is an album I hope you'll look at one day, or even just one song like "Tattoo" or "Some People's Lives", my co-producer/engineer Jeff Balding and I went back to 16 track. A few years later, when we wanted more tracks for another project, we actually "slaved" two 16-track machines together (made them work in sync) so we could keep the 16 track depth. If you (meaning anyone on this thread) has the chance to listen to my own "Working Without a Net", a double disc set composed of unedited live performances recorded directly off the soundboards at shows and onto DAT (and in a couple of cases, minidisc), there's again the startling sense that tape - even DAT, which is digital - is still miles ahead of any kind of recording direct into a computer, no matter what you're using (Pro Tools, DigiDesign etc). It's just... bigger. And of course, there's nothing like live! Anyway, thanks for listening, and again, very much appreciate all the kind words and the analysis being so in depth. Janis Ian

No problem Janis, thanks for the music! Also thanks for the background details really interesting stuff. I agree about recording, digital vs. analogue, I was fortunate enough that even though I was born in the 80's when I was old enough I could jump into my dad's vinyl collection. Playing them when he was out of course, as he didn't trust me with the needle! I used to really enjoy physically 'putting on a record'. It's interesting how with all the digital advancements, tape and vinyl is seemingly impossible to emulate. Somehow with tape, the warmth of the sound can't be properly explained with EQ curves, it's just something you 'feel' when you hear it. Probably why it's so difficult to pin down, 'that sound feels right'! Digital can be unnecessarily harsh, not to mention lose all dynamics when squeezed to boost volumes, just for volumes sake. Also I think due to the lack of recording tracks in the past, on a record you have the essence of a live performance, a moment in time captured. Sometimes those moments can be magical! Thanks again for your comment Janis, I'll pin it at the top so everyone can read your fascinating insights!

I was a shy and awkward teenager when I first heard this song being performed on TV. I was so touched by the utter truthfulness. I'm not surprised Janis won a Grammy and that it was so popular. I imagine that the majority of people could relate to the song regardless of their social status. Most everyone has doubts and insecurities about being liked and loved for themselves. Thank you Janis.

At Seventeen is one of the most poignant songs I've ever heard. Probably because it's so relatable to those of us who went through those years not being on the football team or the cheerleading squad and were seemingly on the outside looking in.

Indeed, it is a marvellous album. Other highlights from that album are "From me to you", "In the winter", "Water colors", "The come on" and "Lover's lullaby". For me, "Between the lines" is on a similar level as "Tapestry" (Carole King), What's going on (Marvin Gaye), Young, gifted and black (Aretha), Harvest (Neil Young), Songs in the key of life (Stevie) and Rumours (Fleetwood Mac). Those wonderful seventies....

So, happy for this review. My friends and I, as seniors in high school, had three albums in constant rotation: "Tapestry" by Carole King, "Society's Child" by Janis Ian, and "Road Food" by The Guess Who. We were thrilled to see her in concert at the University of Illinois with Tom Chapin (both wonderful storytellers). She was amazing; her voice so sweet and pure. I still remember that concert with great fondness.

My parents took me to see Janis for my first concert in the 70s. It’s come full circle, as she’s doing her last tour right now. My sister and I went. It sounds like you know a lot about her. I believe she plays 7 instruments. Amazing lady, and she can STILL hit every note. Her voice is nearly flawless “At 70!” And if you’ve never seen her, you wouldn’t believe how funny she is. At Seventeen, in my opinion, pales compared to other tracks in the Between the Lines album. Still, a wonderful song, and so many could and can relate to the feelings it portrays. Thanks for covering her.

From what I've read, Janis is the definition of a prodigy. She's another artist I was bowled over by as a child of probably 10 or 11. I distinctly recall the time my babysitter played her Janis Ian record one night while my parents were away. Of course, I was just a kid and I had little experience in the world - and didn't understand all the lyrics. But I could feel her truth flowing into me with every note and beat of that song - and it touched me deeply. It's almost as if the Universe compelled her to create this beautiful song. ❤️

Trivia: Janice was pals with Laura Nyro at the Manhattan High School of Art and Music for gifted kids in the early 1960's (not the Fame school). Elliott Randall (Steely Dan) was also there and a pal of Nyro's. You can see Leonard Bernstein review 'Society's Child' with Janice as a mid-teen on KZbin. Elliott Randall played the guitar solo on the Irene Cara track 'Fame'. He was doing session work while still in high school. Sorry, I find rock connections fascinating.

Lupco, I think for most of us who "came up" in the 60's/early 70's, it's always just a couple of degrees of separation. There weren't many airports, very few hotels would take us, we always ran into each other after gigs, club hopping, and a lot of us went to the same schools (or in my case, were thrown out of them).

Was surprised and happy to see you do this classic. Talk about a story and an outstanding delivery; one of my very favorites. You can't help but listen to the whole thing all the way through. Don't drink a beer while listening to this, you' ll wind up with a tear in your eye. Wonderful artist.

Thanks again, Fil! This is a great song and something that I don't remember ever hearing growing up in the 70's, which is really too bad. I really appreciate your attention to this classic older music, it really is such a great service.

What an amazing performance. Such a sweet, smooth voice. I could listen to this song all day. Thank you, Fil for bringing music of so many genres to the forefront of your channel. It has introduced so many new songs and artists to me. Have you ever done a Barney Kessel video? I would love to see you break down one of his performances.

I saw Janis in concert at a local university. She was awesome, but the high point was her encore - Whole Lotta Love (on her acoustic)!! The auditorium went crazy, it was so good👍

Fil I HUGEly enjoy your talks and analyses of pieces of music and the musicians, I'm really awed by how much you know, and even more, your sensitivity and depth. I also like how you never put anybody down. Also I love that English accent, I've been working at it myself. I recall t age 24 - landing in England and feeling I'd come home. It felt more familiar than my USA ever did. Again, love your show and watching you.

Thrilled to see Janis featured here so lovingly and respectfully on Fil's most excellent channel. We wore out Janis' first record, "Society's Child" on our first record player. We didn't realize that we are two years older than she is. We have been writing, recording, and performing our music our whole lives too. We purchased Janis's new album today and bought Society's Child as well. Her voice has served her so well... a young person's voice; ageless really. Her voice soars so high and clear. We've fallen in love with her all over again after fifty years. Best Wishes Janis & well done Fil ⭐Jay & Robin Tremaine

Thanks Fil...I have been a huge fan since I was a teenager in the 1960's. She reaches you with interesting lyrics, melodies and still comes up with new hooks in her songs. Wish you could review "Welcome to Acousticville" but this was very satisfying . I hope this spurs many of your fans to listen to more of her music. She has a voice that needs to be heard.

Thank you, Fil, for highlighting this wonderful singer/songwriter who deserved to win that grammy! She captured my feelings and insecurities when I was 17. I'm getting into your videos so much, seeing my beloved artists in a new light. Your analyses are so intelligent and knowledgeable, with such intensive research. I am impressed every time.

So thrilled you did this video from Janis. Ironically had posted on my FB yesterday n several of us discussed identifying w her poignant lyrics as well as the pain in her voice. Truly you are the best. Love all the coloring of background stories n history of artists. I have this album too. Thank you FIL again.

I remember hearing Societies Child for the first time on TV. It was so different and strange. I think it was on a PBS station. I didn't know it was about an interracial relationship, but I so loved it. I remember she wasn't main stream on the radio but we heard it various places.

I was in high school when this song came out and even today I'm astounded by at such an early age she composed the lyrics of this song that are just so amazing and so honest. I wasn't ugly ( and neither was Janis), but I was very overweight and I was good at basketball and tried out and the coach never even looked at me the whole time I auditioned, but the one saving grace was this one girl came up and told me I was definitely going to be on the team. A year later when I went to Junior college I had this guy watch me throw hoops for ever and he came down from the bleachers one day and told me I was good enough to be on the guys team. I bless him to this day.
