That's because the sheep have to be told what to like .. Music industry never pushed these guys forward.. It takes people like us that seeks things out of the mainstream, and we land on gems like Kings X .. As with my love of Tom Waits... He's not for everyone.. With that being said , there are a lot of us that are open to things that hit a little different and have loads of talent... Better to be known for one's talent, than being 'trendy' .. I've asked quite a few people over the years, what's good about this song , or asking specifically why they like a band .. Best I get , is 'I don't know, I just like them '... Politics, music, movies etc.. people are sheepy... It never goes deeper than bahhh baahh 🐑🐏🐑 Quite one-dimensional ... I personally don't roll like that.. Cheers.

King's X is the band I would take if I was told I had to take one group's music to a deserted island ... without a doubt . First of all , if they make an album ... I BUY IT ! That includes their solo album's their side projects ...anything . As a fan starting in the late 80's I was awestruck by them . They are always good . But , they are a band that has these moments in their songs where your jaw just hits the floor ... they are that good . I call us the " Tribe " because being a King's X fan is more than buying music . King's X is very laid open and personal band with MOUNTAINS of talent and it's hard not to get completely immersed when listening . Their career is definitely a double edged sword because if the music world was just , they would be top rated and paid so much more . On the other hand the band has remained unspoiled , is pure organic music with soul that runs miles deep . This song is BRILLIANT and proves this band walks on the water . kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpPXkJyDiq-Wa5o PK

I have been a guitarist for 25 years, and have played in around 10 different bands all over the place - and King's X is my number one all time favorite band. They are the complete package. It is a shame that they never received the mainstream recognition that they deserve, but it's because they're just too good, and don't fit in the sugar pop crap that pop audiences can't get enough of. They are the quintessential musician's band.

Thanks so much for featuring the truly great and very underrated Kings X! I'm glad they've been successful enough to carve out a long career. Ty Tabor invented (or help popularized) some of the techniques that became popular among guitarists in the 90's, such as drop D tuning. I love that Ty never overplays and stays in the pocket. Dug Pinnick is one of the best vocalists out there, along with his bass excellent playing. Guitar geek note: Ty Tabor used a Lab Series amp (solid state) on Kings X's earlier album to get his signature tone.

As an interesting (to me) story, my wife and I were traveling across America back in the spring of 91 shortly after they released Faith, Hope, Love. As I was driving and jamming to that release, my wife pulled the J-card from the cassette case and started looking at it. The next moment, she says, hey, I know him. That's Ty Tabor. I about drove off the road. I'd already been listening to King's X since about 88. She proceeded to tell me that she was out late one night with her girlfriend when she was in college. They wound up staying over at her girlfriend's boyfriend's place. The boyfriend roomed with Ty and she became acquainted with Ty that way. My wife also went to the same college as Ty, so they had mutual friends. It turned out the boyfriend was also a friend of mine from all the way back to 79. It's just a really small world. My friend and Ty still keep in contact after all these years, which is pretty cool. I have mad respect for Ty's guitar skills. Also, if you listen to his side projects, you can really hear his Beatles influences come out.

Straight up--and i'm a bit surprised no one has noted it here--King's X never broke into the so-called mainstream because their lyrics have always been of such a deep spiritual bent that they were labeled "Christian Rock" at the beginning of their run. In fact, the original lineup was spun out of Petra, and yes, Phil Keaggy, whom Ty really resembles in the dark with his amp running. Given that i'm a music geek, i can't say the reason i know of them is because of the time i spent in Texas, but it is true that the reason i actually met these guys is because of time i spent hanging around Christian musicians...in Texas. Interesting that they have always rejected the Christian label, and sought secular gigs, but their songs are often very deep indeed, and speak to internally conflicted spiritual seekers anywhere. I'll have to initiate that conversation one day, even though it can be trouble; it's hard to imagine rock music without its gospel root. Maybe on the live feed one day.... Meanwhile, here's Bob Dylan working it out back in the '80s. I can't tell who this axe-man is; Mark Knopfler played on the album version. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zn7dqnWsad6Chrc

This is an overly simplified explanation. The truth is much more complicated. There have been plenty of Christian bands that have broken into the mainstream. Jars of Clay, Mercy Me, Amy Grant, and many more; there have also been many more bands who weren't Christian bands, but that had Christian members and spiritual lyrics - such as U2, Extreme, and many more. So the door wasn't automatically shut on KX because of their faith. They were mismanaged to put it succinctly.

@@ThePubliusValerius I know they got a really bitter taste in their mouth after having to spend time at Jim and Tammy Baker's "campus" and were disgusted by all the sinful waste of money displayed everywhere. Played a cover of this band's "Lost in Germany" in the 90's because of the great lick that's the song's basis- but hadn't listened to them in a while. This track, rocking a drop D tuning- and a live one from 1999 Rockplalast- "We Were Born To Be Loved" have gotten me fired up about them again. On the latter, the funk section's starts and stops are so tight- it's just three notes in that ostinato but the trio is so tight- without any nods or visual cues- quite a feat. Phil, you're spot with your observation.

I had the extremely rare privilege of seeing them in a TINY venue...a club here in Colorado Springs. They were set up on the floor in the corner of the bar...no platform/stage! And I was standing there not more than eight or ten feet away from them watching and listening...quite literally swimming in the groove. When they played "We Were Born To Be Loved," I was pretty convinced I had died and gone to heaven to be able to witness that. When they were playing those tight breaks in the ending section of that song, watching Jerry absolutely IMMERSED in the music was something I will never forget. I have rarely seen musicians so in sync with each other than that night. Dug was amazing...with his bass playing and his vocals. The passion that comes through his voice is incredible. And there aren't enough superlatives to attach to Ty Tabor's guitar playing, his amazing, unique tone, and his vocals. I was so blown away by them that night and became a diehard fan, although I've only gotten to see them once after that...they were the warm-up band for Dream Theater and Joe Satriani.

Wow. LOVE King's X. Local to me, seen them many times. Almost like grunge bfore grunge, they had cult status even before Sam Taylor (ZZ Top producer) "found" them, and still to this day have dedicated loyal fans. Black Flag (song and band) hold special memories for me. About the same time they were burning up Houston, there was another band I used to go see...Galactic Cowboys. They used the same management as King's X. Had a similar style in their harmonies. Same faux McCartney-esque melodies. But where King's X were more prog rock, Galactic Cowboys had elements of jazz, psychedelia and punk. Really awesome band in their own right. In 2007 Galactic Cowboy Wally Farkas teamed up with Ty Tabor and created the band "Xenuphobe"

Yeah, Eddie Vedder said "Grunge" wasnt invented in Seattle, it was invented in Katy, Texas. Jerry Cantrell has confessed to "ripping off" (his own words) tone and riffs from King's X.

I saw Galactic Cowboys and KING'S X at Summerfest in 92 Maybe the best show ever! No auto tune, no click track, no pre recorded backing trax, none of that crap! Galactic Cowboys were " muthafuckin mushroom cloud layin muthafuckas" But KING'S X was scorched earth Prisoner Power of love We were born to be loved Over my head I'll never be the same The world around me Etc.etc etc KING'S X just walks on higher ground than everyone else

I absolutely adore their first 4 albums. They were first on my radar when the Houston Chronicle ran an article about them in the summer of '87 when they got signed to a major record label. I remember reading it when I was visiting my dad's house. After I was already a fan in '92 or so, I was living with my sister in a different state and washing dishes while MTV was playing in the kitchen. Suddenly, the unmistakable sound of KX came on, and I had to rush out to find out their new song ("Black Flag"). Top band. Thanks for taking the time to analyze.

Man, Ty Tabor's lead playing is just so much better live than on record - that out solo is great. So melodic.

Doug’s always been a very interesting bass-player for me. He’s obviously very talented, but he’s never been flashy or complex. He’s always been more interested in creating this really thick, heavy bedrock to underly their songs. He’s a master of subtlety and understatement, and the way he uses them compliments the band’s sound perfectly. And on a side note, he is the nicest, friendliest professional musician I have ever met. The first time I ever saw King’s X back in 2005, I met them at their merch table and told them it was my first King’s X show, and he gave me a big hug and said “You’re not a virgin anymore!” Ty and Jerry were really nice, too. Just great guys all around who really appreciate their fans.

@@crescentfreshbret Cliff Burton was a really nice guy too. He signed a Metallica shirt for me and my best friend Sarah for free cause we were kids at our first ever Metallica show. Which pissed off Lars. Unfortunately Cliff isn't with us anymore, maybe his soul lives on Doug.

Exceptionally good appraisal IMHO, spot on. Especially regards "each band member playing their part" without ego. Always a fan of Rush & Motorhead for achieving such a full sound, but these guy's vocal harmonies are amazing. Beatles meets 'drop D tuning, Rock !!'. Amazing. Ritchie Blackmore offered this lead singer to join 'Deep Purple' ... He rejected it saying he's got his own project 'King's X' ... What a cool guy..

You hit all the great descriptive words that highlight the importance of how they mesh, and how they're all in it for the greatness of the over-all outcome... They don't win unless the good of the music comes first... Truly Epic...

The dry, natural vocals raise the bar on this song. They don’t need to hide behind effects.
