The best thing about the Queen movie is that both of my grandkids (17 and 14) have discovered Queen. They can't get enough! They took all of my CDs and have watched every youtube video. Fil - your enthusiasm is infectious - it's obvious you love it by that smile on your face. I can assure you as a fellow musician I know that feeling, that buzz, that high that music gives. Sheer joy. As for Staying Power - this live version kicks a surprising amount of ass! I know that the Hot Space album caused a ton of issues in the Queen fandom, some absolutely hated it, some welcomed a new direction. I kind of dig it, personally. Sometimes a band HAS to take a risk stylistically, even if some deem it a failure. At least Queen were so talented and diverse that they could try new things.
@wingsofpegasus6 жыл бұрын
Exactly, some bands get stale trying to produce the same 'kind' of song hoping it'll be a hit like the previous ones. But music should always be a clean slate, just create without boundaries and see what is produced. This is something I really liked about Queen, this diversity.

This live version of "Staying Power" is better than the original version from the Hot Space album. It's way more aggressive and high energy. Also, even though it's kind of hard to see in this video, John Deacon is playing the funky, scratchy rhythm guitar part. The bass line is being played by the backup keyboardist (who is not visible onscreen). Great performance!
@MattLeech3 ай бұрын
Staying Power has always been one of those tracks I skip on Hot Space, but after hearing this live performance, it's taken on a whole new dimension (for me) and is another example where the studio version doesn't always capture the depth and intention of a song.

Freddy had plenty of stamina. He contracted a little understood disease that at that time was incurable. He probably contracted it in the 1970's And with a long incubation period would have been non-symptomatic until the 1980's. It wasn't until then that it became recognized and I understand Freddie was diagnosed not HiV + but rather with Kaposes Sarcoma (full-blown AIDS). Given that, it is amazing that he continued to work until 1991.

Some people talk about Hot Space as the album that nobody liked, including the band. But that's what true artists do -- they experiment, they try new things. Not every one of them is going to be #1. But Queen were a group of insanely talented musicians, so they could take even the not-#1 songs and do this with them. That's why they were who they were.

It's my understanding based on what I've read, that Brian May and Roger Taylor were not real happy with the musical direction of Queen at this time. Freddie had apparently taken the reigns on the album "Hot Space". This song is the opening track of that album. What is amazing about this performance is just how tight and funky it is. No evidence of "creative differences" in this blistering rendition of of the song. Queen weren't just supremely talented. They were true professionals who gave their fans everything they had in spite of whatever problems they were having behind the scenes. A band for All-Time! P.S. I hear a little bit of influence from "Royal Orleans" and "Hots on for Nowhere" by Zeppelin in this song. Probably just me.

Of course, you are listening to a sound track tweaked for the DVD… the difference between that and what the audience heard live in Milton Keynes (and on Live TV on Channel 4) is significant. For a start Rogers electronic drums sound dated now, as they were very 80’s trend which has long since worn off, so they have largely been manipulated to sound like regular drums on the DVD. Same with the additional keyboards, some very 80’s sounds which have been tweaked to sound less dated. Main difference for the core band is that live John’s bass (although he aint playing it in this track, but this applied to the rest of the show) was much louder and more prominent in the mix on the night, live he could play the “I’m louder than you” game with BHM and RMT when he felt like it (and to some extent they played games with each other like that all the time), DVD mixes John down significantly (possibly because he was less involved in the DVD mix). Same with Queens Wembley DVD, Johns bass is significantly lower down in the mix on the DVD than he actually was on the night live for the audience (I know I was there, but also there are copies of what went out to the audience on the night around, which make a good contrast). Of course, all live albums (and DVD’s/BlueBay’s) get the sound refined compared to what actually went out on the night, but it’s always interesting to hear what those differences are. And as we discussed earlier Johns rhythm playing live in MK, on those songs he didn’t play bass, was brilliant. And a good insight into that side of him, after all there are lots of tracks with John on guitar and no Brian (such as cool cat, misfire, etc). Cheers
@wingsofpegasus6 жыл бұрын
Yeah the mixes are often bass heavy live, then for dvd it remixed from the output channel from the mixer recorded on the day. Interestingly I was watching Bon Jovi's performance when he was inducted into the hall of fame, the phone footage shows him singing flat a lot. But for the tv release his voice has been auto-tuned and sounds a lot better. Queen definitely didn't need this, but it's a shame this kind of thing is common place nowadays.
@brianjohnson57896 жыл бұрын
there is a good analysis of live killers at www.queenlive.ca/livekillers.htm for the montreal live DVD they played 2 nights, and picked the best of each night per song (and often the sound is from one night and the visuals from the other). Fred got upset with the camera crew so ruined their continuity on purpose by wearing different outfits on different nights, so the DVD looks like he changes costume a lot. so Queen did manipulate, but yea not as much as some people. Thin Lizzy Live Killers is the classic live LP that had much work done in the studio, but still sounds great anyways so I forgive anything. Best Wishes

@wingsofpegasus3 жыл бұрын
John played bass ☺
@kelliwhittaker75023 жыл бұрын
I looked again at the video, and it really looks like John is on a guitar. I did a little digging and found this... "Staying Power" would be performed on the band's accompanying Hot Space Tour, albeit much faster and heavier, with real drums replacing the drum machine and guitars and keyboards replacing the horns. (This arrangement contained no actual bass guitar, as John Deacon played guitar in addition to May.) It was also played on Queen's The Works Tour, albeit less frequently than on the Hot Space Tour.” So maybe he is after all. 🤷🏻♀️

A good performance of a track from the unfairly maligned Hot Space album. The songs they chose to play live from it ended up sounding a lot heavier live. The second half of Hot Space has somgs on it that wouldn't have sound out of place on the preceeding album. Body Language is the only track I tend to skip on a play through. The album just needed a bit more guitar!

Not quite into this song, but LOVE it's funky style. That's why I love Extreme's album Pornograffitti!
