I saw Glen play with Steve Wariner at a fund raiser Steve held every year in his hometown. The venue was outside and I was waiting at Glen's tour bus after the show, with an album for him to hopefully sign, not knowing he was already on the tour bus. I finally walked away and as I was walking I heard someone yell at me. I turned around it was Glen having just walked off the bus. He said, "were you waiting for me"? I went back and he signed my album and even talked guitars for a few minutes. It is a great memory for me.

I was at a Guns N Roses concert right after Glen passed away. Axel said he was doing a tribute song for someone who influenced his musical career. Next thing you know both he and all the die hard rockers filling the stadium, are singing Wichita Lineman. Really moving.

Glen Campbell played my Uncle's 50th birthday party. I got to hang out with Glen. on the Island of Kauai in 2008. I picked him up hitchhiking. I didn't recognize him. He didn't know who I was. We were just two friends riding around the Island. So we drove to "pine trees" in Hanalei Bay. Shook hands and said goodbye. When I sat down at the picnic table with my friend Jeff asked me "how long have you been friends with Glen Campbell." I said "I just picked him up hitchhiking." Glen would walk Hanalei Beach. He would stop and hang out, and everybody would pass the guitar around in a circle. He was comfortable just being a person among other people. He loved the beach, he loved to listen to other people play, and hear what they had to say. There was no edge to him. Easy to be with.

Yours is a great recollection story. I met him twice myself, about 10 years apart. Neither time having anything at all to do with music. Just the two of us happening upon each other and talking one-on-one during each occasion to pass time. And you are right. He was a gentleman's gentleman in terms of casual interaction and enjoyment of being in the company of others with friendly conversation.

Cool story. I had a similar, much shorter story of an encounter with a humble Danny Gatton three weeks before he passed. I had met him four times in 1979 when he repaired two guitars for me at his shop in Oxon Hill, MD, but I had been out of State a while and had not seen him when I came back since 1979. I honestly didn't recognize him that day in 1994 although we talked a bit about my guitar and other things at a music gear swap meet down in Waldorf, MD. Only after his passing did a good friend, who had been with us in the latter part of the conversation, make me realize it was Danny.

Session playing is what got Campbell in the door and introduced his great talents to the fame makers. His superlative god-gifted vocals are what carried him on to fame and fortune, producing no less than SIXTY-THREE “Glen Campbell” albums which were released thru his legendary career! On another note regarding another genuine TALENT- NOBODY analyzes the talents of musical artists as THOROUGHLY, as INTELLIGENTLY, as KNOWLEDGEABLY as Fil! In 1967 I lived in Los Angeles . I got every break imaginable. I was also only twenty years old. I was at CBS on Fairfax where they shot the Smothers Brothers Show one day with a musical Director doing a lead sheet. There were all these small 10 by 10 feet practice rooms. I saw a door open, and it was Glen alone in one of the rooms with an Ovation ( not the model he’s using here ) guitar. I walked in the room, and he just said “hi, how are you doing ? “ I said fine I was just there with a musical director writing out a chart for me. I asked if I could just sit in the other chair ,and listen to what your doing ,and why you’re doing it. It said it was something for the show. In any event he was as humble, and kind as a person can get . He had a sheet he was looking at, I assumed he was reading a chart. It was just a chord chart. I had no idea he didn’t read, but he knew instinctive what to do . That was so long ago. It only lasted maybe five minutes, but it was a five minutes I’ll never forget. Great interpreter of songs. Jimmy Webb wrote for Glen. That is a match made in heaven. A great singer,a great player, and great writer . That was LA in the mid sixties.

Thank you for covering Glen again, it's important to keep hammering on the masters. Wichita Lineman also is a masterclass on just about everything you need to make a perfect record - his DanElectro 6 string bass lead break alone (not Fender VI as is reported) is so simply perfect it's why we have music - to make up for when words can't convey. I agree, it really is well worth seeing. I watched that documentary because I've always loved Glen Campbell, and also because my mother has Alzheimer's Disease. It was heartbreaking, but also inspiring and educational; I highly recommend it to anyone who's ever been touched by that horrible disease or any other type of dementia - and that's just about everyone. On a lighter note, when I was a kid my dad was a lineman for Bell in NW PA. The first time I heard Wichita Lineman (about 7 or 8 years old) I just couldn't believe it. I couldn't wait to tell my mom, my brother, my friends, the neighbors, etc., that there was a song about my dad on the radio! The "Wichita" part went right over my head but I understood all the references to the job and was absolutely floored that my dad had become so famous. My mom doesn't have many memories left but for some reason that one stuck with her - me running up to her and yelling "they're singing a song about DAD on the radio!!!" - which makes me both cringe and smile at the same time. I still love that song even though I eventually figured out it wasn't specifically about my father. :)

It is beautiful and tragic. Stunning how the music remained so resiliently even as good overall functioning was being peeled away by Alzheimer's. The man loved music and loved having a stage to perform, and he was amazing. I was blessed to see him on tour at a time when he still appeared well, although it's clear now that he was deteriorating cognitively already. He was entertaining, corny as always, and effortlessly fluid on guitar, which he highlighted to our pleasure. His voice was in fine form, unlike most of the guys in their 70's we know and love. Still miss the guy. RIP Glen

Glen's show was called "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour", ran from 1969 to 72. It was a fun show which I enjoyed a lot, and was, what was called a Variety Show, back in-the-day. There were quite a few of them at that time.

Fil, thanks for the mention of John Hartford as the writer of “Gentle On My Mind” as I had brought up in an earlier analysis of Glens guitar work. This is wonderful example of how great a guitarist he really was. A lot of people have never realized his complete level of talent being able to play lead and sing also., even though this is just instrumental.

Gentle On My Mind was one of the most emotionally layered American songs ever....both calming and invigorating....joyful and wistful....of the moment and eternal....one of the greatest singer/songwriters of a previous time.....thank you for putting this spotlight on his abilities as a guitarist.

Love your videos. Not a guitar player, just love the instrument. I grew up listening to Rock but a number of years ago a guy at work who loved country told me about Glen Campbell as a guitarist. Wow I would have never known.

Such a great song and so much feeling in Glen's lead playing. Talk about sweeping he's doing it without any distortion, that's insanely hard to do and hard to keep the clarity. Thanks for the analysis and sharing the vid Fil. Cheers!!! 100K subs coming soon...

He was a very underrated guitarist. He was stuck between rock and country, so I guess that's why most people don't really know how great he was. Most people just thought of him as pop. And Fil gives us all the technical details of Glen's playing, and my head explodes.

But never underrated by Muscians you'll will note. Though I found a lot of his music a bit bland ( except his Jimmy Web songs) His ability to interpret and the emotion he could add to a song -just wow. Talented man.

Love your videos, as always. Glenn really is one of the best guitarists of all time. He recorded a fundraising special for PBS here, I still kick myself for not going. The guitar he's playing is an Ovation Breadwinner. I had one, and stopped using it because it was totally useless without 2 9-volt batteries.

Wow, what a smooth instrumental and detailed analysis. I have been a big fan if both Bill Withers and Glen Campbell. I truly appreciate the way he stayed true to some of Bill's signature vocal techniques, like the "I know, I know I know" repetition that Bill followed with a cescendo. Glen captures Bill Withers' somber song and his embellisments served the song and showcased Glen's style as well!
