I saw Glen play with Steve Wariner at a fund raiser Steve held every year in his hometown. The venue was outside and I was waiting at Glen's tour bus after the show, with an album for him to hopefully sign, not knowing he was already on the tour bus. I finally walked away and as I was walking I heard someone yell at me. I turned around it was Glen having just walked off the bus. He said, "were you waiting for me"? I went back and he signed my album and even talked guitars for a few minutes. It is a great memory for me.

Glen Campbell played my Uncle's 50th birthday party. I got to hang out with Glen. on the Island of Kauai in 2008. I picked him up hitchhiking. I didn't recognize him. He didn't know who I was. We were just two friends riding around the Island. So we drove to "pine trees" in Hanalei Bay. Shook hands and said goodbye. When I sat down at the picnic table with my friend Jeff asked me "how long have you been friends with Glen Campbell." I said "I just picked him up hitchhiking." Glen would walk Hanalei Beach. He would stop and hang out, and everybody would pass the guitar around in a circle. He was comfortable just being a person among other people. He loved the beach, he loved to listen to other people play, and hear what they had to say. There was no edge to him. Easy to be with.

Cool story. I had a similar, much shorter story of an encounter with a humble Danny Gatton three weeks before he passed. I had met him four times in 1979 when he repaired two guitars for me at his shop in Oxon Hill, MD, but I had been out of State a while and had not seen him when I came back since 1979. I honestly didn't recognize him that day in 1994 although we talked a bit about my guitar and other things at a music gear swap meet down in Waldorf, MD. Only after his passing did a good friend, who had been with us in the latter part of the conversation, make me realize it was Danny.

Well spotted on the Jazz phrasing. Glen snuck a lot of that into his playing. He could (and did) play pretty much any genre, and he’s mainly known as a country artist now (albeit one who successfully “crossed-over”). All that said, Glen’s original aspiration when he set out on his journey was to be a jazz guitarist. Django Reinhardt was his biggest influence. The double helping of talent between vocals and guitars (not to mention arranging, showmanship, and even some songwriting) also brings up some lesser known things about Glen. His guitar work with the Wrecking Crew is, thankfully, slowly becoming more widely known. However, less widely known is that he actually got his foot into the studio door through his vocal talent. Some of his earliest studio work was providing backing vocals - uncredited of course. The producer Jimmy Bowen made the statement that Glen could harmonize with a backfiring truck. (That could be taken a couple of ways, but he meant it as a compliment - Glen could harmonize with anyone). He was also tapped to do demo work for established artists - because he could sing in the style of basically any male artist. Most famously now, with the release of Glen Campbell Sings for the King, was his demo work for Elvis. So these things kept going in circles for him. His guitar took him out of Arkansas and eventually landed him as a member of The Champs in LA. That made him a lot of connections and he started writing songs for a music publishing company. His demo work on his own songs got him noticed by some of the producers who wanted him for backup work on sessions. Once in that world his guitar ability was quickly noticed and took center stage. And then a springboard from that to a recording artist where his vocals take the forefront. And now, finally, his guitar gifts are starting to be more widely known and recognized.

In 1967 I lived in Los Angeles . I got every break imaginable. I was also only twenty years old. I was at CBS on Fairfax where they shot the Smothers Brothers Show one day with a musical Director doing a lead sheet. There were all these small 10 by 10 feet practice rooms. I saw a door open, and it was Glen alone in one of the rooms with an Ovation ( not the model he’s using here ) guitar. I walked in the room, and he just said “hi, how are you doing ? “ I said fine I was just there with a musical director writing out a chart for me. I asked if I could just sit in the other chair ,and listen to what your doing ,and why you’re doing it. It said it was something for the show. In any event he was as humble, and kind as a person can get . He had a sheet he was looking at, I assumed he was reading a chart. It was just a chord chart. I had no idea he didn’t read, but he knew instinctive what to do . That was so long ago. It only lasted maybe five minutes, but it was a five minutes I’ll never forget. Great interpreter of songs. Jimmy Webb wrote for Glen. That is a match made in heaven. A great singer,a great player, and great writer . That was LA in the mid sixties.

You know, speaking of Glen's right-hand weaponry, and hybrid picking specifically... maybe it's just me, but it seems that as he got older he incorporated hybrid picking more and more. Even in rhythm playing, I've noticed it -- watch him play the intro to "Highway Man," on acoustic. No idea what he's doing (I don't dare try!), but the sound is huge. He sometimes used pick & fingers when kicking off "Galveston," too. His transcendent version of Jimmy Webb's beautiful "If These Walls Could Speak" opens with hybrid picking. A heck of a guitar god was Glen!

This shows why so many legendary rock, blues, jazz, and country musicians sought out Glen Campbell for session work, consults, and peer-jams! One of the very best guitarists of the 20th Century who appears on so many hit songs of his day without a credit on the release. Along with all the important things in his life such as faith and family, Glen was an extraordinary musician and most brilliant performer, all-ways! Very nice analysis Fil, your insight is spot-on. “Rock!” 🎤🎸🎶🏅🆒
