Most people don't realize she was an accomplished piano player. In the beginning of her career, she always played the piano when she was performing.

When Aretha died, Carole appeared on MSNBC to talk about her. She mentioned this performance, and said that Aretha had stopped playing the piano in public years earlier. When she sat down and started playing, Carole understood what a special tribute this was. It was the artist paying tribute to the songwriter. The Kennedy Center Honors have resulted in several amazing performances over the years.

Also a very different type of singer. Elton is a pop singer. His product is what sold and how he profiled himself first. For Franklin it was the show of her skill live. People came to see Elton John because of his music they came to see Aretha because of her singing.

Aretha was 73 years old at the time she did this performance. At that time she was battling pancreatic cancer which we all know at this point took her life in August 2018. But to come out on stage and give this type of performance at that age on top of having major health issues is beyond amazing. But this here is what true Talent is. Not what we see today from these young female singers who come out on stage half naked, lip singing with 25 dances behind them flopping all around on stage.

I have loved Aretha for a long time and many times have watched this incredible powerful performance of a song that is an absolute anthem from the Queen of Soul. The energy between her and Carole King is so moving. I did not think that anyone could make me appreciate the glory of this performance any more than I already did but, Fil, you have. The way this song builds is irresistible. Aretha's age adds to the poignancy of the performance, and she marks the crescendo of the song by standing up and removing her fur coat! The crowd response is palpable as they will her to take it to the limit! Which she does!! Fil, I love the breadth of your channel. Keep it coming.

Aretha was 73 at the time of the performance and I’m so grateful I was able to see it. The VOICE was electrifying as was the room: she brought the electricity. I’m full every time that I see the recording because in it’s brilliance there’s nothing like being in the very presence of such legendary talent. She was battling cancer at that time and yet she blew the house away! It’s was a marvelous performance by one the most amazing voices of all time. Carole King was ecstatic and overjoyed. Aretha just had one of the purest voices in my lifetime. She could sing anything and sing it better than anyone else. Even doing duets with other greats, she would stand out. Part of my childhood from an early age, Mom loved her as well. On our stereo a classic day would be the sound track to a 2001 Space Odessy, followed by music from "Hair" and finished with Aretha. Aretha is a generational talent, no question. Her voice is truly amazing. I've seen her, Tina Turner, Linda Ronstadt, Patti La Belle, the Pointer Sisters, Coco Taylor, live in concert. And I listen to Billie Holiday, Diana Washington, Whitney Houston, Big Mama Thorton, Big Maybelle Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. But no one compares to Etta James. I had the pleasure of attending five of her concerts. It's a shame she never got the recognition she deserved. If you haven't heard of Etta, you may want to check her out., if not do an analysis of her singing. You won't be disappointed.

wholeheartedly agree, how lucky we are that this was captured on video for posterity. it's as if aretha and carol were for a moment in a beautiful symbiosis, carol encouraging aretha on, and aretha giving back in equal measure. add to that the outpouring of enthusiasm from the audience, and it is indeed a once in a lifetime performance. i agree the kennedy center honors have yielded quite a number of these standout live events. from a separate venue, one that stands out in my mind relative to aretha is when she stood in for pavarotti at the grammys and delivered a jawdropping 'nessun dorma'. the look throughout an audience's faces tells a thousand words. the queen of soul, indeed.

No one has had the ability to put me in a trance while they perform. I sat in front of the stage at a club performance she did so long ago (decades?) I was so engrossed in her performance that at first I did noticed she had walked near my table and looking at me AND not missing a note, she was able to change the words and tune and was singing 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'. I was shocked back into reality and Aretha started laughing and went back into her song. How can someone do all this (how did the musicians know?) with such perfection. Something I could never forget in this life time or the next one.
