One thing I’ve noticed with Jackson Browne’s vocal in this song is not only that rich, caramel tone, but he’s also using using dramatic punches to add a layer of percussion to it. He’s just brilliant and unique and so undervalued in the history of music.

Except that he’s my favorite, so some of us don’t undervalue him! His writing and composition, emotion, who he plays with, DAVID LINDLEY, how he sings, poignant lyrics… ❤❤❤❤❤❤

I think you are dead on correct. And in contrast, when he quietly sings "out into the cool of the evening strolls the pretender" and all the accompaniment drops away, the impact is stunning. It's like a velvet punch to the soul.

I'm going to find myself a girl Who can show me what laughter means And we'll fill in the missing colors In each other's paint-by-number dreams And then we'll put our dark glasses on And we'll make love until our strength is gone And when the morning light comes streaming in We'll get up and do it again Get it up again What a wonderful lyricist this guy is :-)

There is no finer songwriter or performer alive today than Jackson Browne... he can perform with a backup band, but when I saw him, he had about 17 guitars on a rack in front of him and a piano... and he just mesmerized us all with song after song and spoken stories in between. Thanks for this. The Pretender is a masterful song, but also a masterful story. What a writer.

Back in the late 1980s, I saw Jackson play with his own band; Lindley and El Rayo X were the opening band. El RayoX were great but the classic-rock type audience didn't have any patience for this strange-looking guy that apparently they never heard of ( I guess they never bothered to read the liner notes to JB's records). Part way through Jackson's set with his own band, everybody else left the stage, the roadies wheeled out a piano, Jackson sat down and started to play, and we heard the strings of a violin come through the PA system as Lindley strolled out, playing the violin. They did a half a dozen duets together: piano and guitar, guitar and violin two guitars, and so on. It was *magical*, but the obnoxious and somewhat drunk crowd would not shut up. They kept calling out for other songs, and although some tried to clap along with the music, they had been drinking and couldn't keep good time, and anyway it wasn't really appropriate clap-along music. At one point, Jackson said to the crowd, "y'all are asking for some really old songs. I guess this must be the valley that time forgot!" An audience can make-or-break a concert.

Nice. I've loved Jackson Browne since the beginning. Even bought his book in the mid '80s (its here, somewhere). Fave album cover, 'Late For The Sky". Family had a '54 Bel Air so,,, Here, fave line, "....i've been aware of the time going by. They say in the end, its a wink of an eye....". a little sick of it all....Lines been in my brain for weeks.. oh, can't forget, Jackson lent his Dumble and i believe studio time to SRV for "Texas Flood" but y'all probably knew that already.

The picture of Jackson Browne seated at the piano in the CD Best Of Jackson Browne was taken by Harold Diltz. The original photograph was shot in my parents living room at my father's grand piano in Sonoma California. Jackson didn't like the size of the shutters. Harold said he could fix it. Harold cropped in the shutters using some photographs of the doors entering the main Gallery and the dining room. He did it with an enlarger and an airbrush. The reason that the window seal down by Jackson left hand is so low is that the house was built in 1838. When the wood floors were installed that bought the floors up resulting in the window seals being lower in the room. If you look at the postcards over Jackson's head in the photograph with a magnifying glass you can see that one of the clouds has a face that looks like Jerry Garcia. It's in black and white but the postcard was in color and it was a rainbow cloud. I was probably 13 years old. I used to refer to Jackson as "the guy with two last names."

Absolute respect for your knowledge of “music theory”, and songwriting......While I enjoy listening to musicologists break down my favorite songs, I admit that I find a little selfish solace, in that I can enjoy music and find “wonder”, and “awe” in the magic these artists create, without understanding the “mechanics” behind it.......Really enjoyed the video, and for what it’s worth, “Late for the Sky”, is my favorite JB song....Maybe, one day you can enlighten us with a reaction.

"I'm gonna find myself a girl Who can show me what laughter means and we'll fill in the missing colors in each other's paint-by-number dreams. and then we'll put our dark glasses on, and we'll make love until our strength is gone. And when the morning light comes streaming in We'll get up and do it again Amen." This song is so poignant, borderline tragic - about the loss of hope & youthful dreams but does hold out hope for finding refuge in love. Jackson Browne's such an amazing lyricist.

I played this album Running on Empty over and over. I went back in the archives of my mind, actually the internet😎and I saw him August 8, 1973 at the Greensboro Coliseum and the other group with him was America. Not sure who took first billing. I was 10 years old and my much older older sister took me in her Jensen Healey with the top down This concert, my very first, was influential to my music interests. Then two years later I saw the Eagles at the same place. Thanks, Fil.
