Marie Fredrickson (ROXETTE) was an amazing singer. She had lots of issues with her voice after the brain tumor. I had the opportunity to watch her perform live twice after the tumor. She would make some mistakes, her voice would break here and there. She would even forget the lyrics. BUT the crowd was still there for her. No one was upset. I was a singer/ keyboardist most of my adult life, but in my mid 50's I became very ill. Recovery and consequences are still happening - medical crisis after medical crisis. I can't sing anymore no matter how much I want to - but I still have my hands, so instead of writing songs I write and record instrumentals and I am better at that then I used to be. I am 70 now, still writings and recording. Life throws curveballs. We weather through them and adjust. When music is inside you, you have to develop a way to keep creating. After watching a video on Celine's illness, a lot of her issue is that she misses the audience adoration. The love she got because of her wonderful voice. She hasn't adjusted to the fact that she can't sing the way she used to and I am sure we will see a lot more of her miming, so she can still get that adoration. Maybe that will give her the confidence to keep fighting the disease for which there is no cure. But I don't think she will be happy living a lie, because miming is not satisfying, especially if people tell her afterward how wonderful she sounds and knows it was a recording.

Good work again Fil. I appreciate how you detail these issues objectively yet with empathy. It is a tragic fact that great singers can lose their voices - nothing to be ashamed of, and for most it is inevitable. A few examples of great voices that have sadly lost their esteemed quality (usually to medical issues): Linda Ronstadt, Steve Tyler, Jenny Morris. These artists acknowledged their vocally-challenged situations, and their fans understand with empathy. It's only when the vocal-reality is obfuscated from listeners that we rightly become disgruntled upon learning the truth.

A saw an interview with Celine Dion where she admits she's been struggling with a neurologic disorder for much longer than most of us knew. The spasms can happen without warning and cause her to lose control of certain muscles, making it impossible to sing. This was happening even while she was performing in Las Vegas. That she's able to stand up and sing at all, never mind make it look effortless, is a testament to her perseverance and courage. Her performance at the Olympics was overshadowed by distasteful politics and should've garnered more accolades than it did. I am neither surprised nor offended that she used prerecorded material. Dion has more than paid her dues and under these circumstances, it doesn't really matter.

I absolutely prefer natural voice over pitch corrected. The charm of a concert is how well, or bad, the musicians are performing. Some concerts are just great from the start, others aren't but then a good musician will try to make the best of it and even apologize for not being able to deliver an excellent performance. The thing is that a good musician will very rarely have a downright bad performance, as professionalism and pride mostly are a guarantee for at least a decent performance.

I remember watching Martha Reeves…I think on Jools Holland and hearing her warts and all, of course, watching a great vocalist of yesteryear struggling to hit notes was difficult to watch, but she must have been 65-70, so obviously she would not have the voice like in her great Motown days, but she was genuine and I’m certain that her fans would appreciate that. Unfortunately her team does not do a good job at making artistic decisions, and she is usually the one who gets the heat for it. She has been lip-syncing parts of her songs for decades, rightfully so imo because it helps preserve her voice and with the amount she performs it’s okay I personally think. What is not okay is having a person in her fifties lip-syncing to a track of her voice from when she was 25… or switching tracks in the middle of a song to a recording that is 20 years older. It’s sloppy work from the artistic team and I think it’s not fair to her because even when she lips, she puts her whole heart into it and she has really mastered it but if you listen closely and her voice doesn’t fit of course it’s disappointing.

What I’m really interested in is whether an artist has any choice whether or not they mime. I can imagine that organisers are (too) afraid of anything going wrong or even any small flaws that could happen, thus insisting on (prerecording and) miming. And I know that there are artists who refuse to mime, which I highly appreciate. I just think that in cases like these, it could be accepting or having no performance at all.

@@lizatsurkan4323 Celine’s illness causes flare ups. She can sing and sing very well sometimes but her illness makes her voice incredibly inconsistent and unreliable. Just because she can still sing sometimes doesn’t mean she’s able to perform a whole concert, or even whole songs, without her voice going out of control or even giving out completely, ESPECIALLY since her flare ups are caused by things like adrenaline spikes, loud noises, sensory overload, which is exactly what a concert setting is. I have always been a big Celine Dion fan, but this whole Olympics performance has made me thinking differently. I understand she lost her voice and is suffering but there are some people that think that she has got her voice back and sang like she did 30 years ago. This is just fraudulent, and it does a disservice to singers who are actually suffering with the same health conditions. Also I recently found out for the last 20 years she has also been miming many performances on and off, which questions how do you know anything is live or not? Anyways I’m glad you made all these videos presenting the facts, I would have never found your channel if it wasn’t for that Olympics performance. Thanks for another great analysis video.

I am sad she lost her earlier voice, but Id prefer she sang live to her best ability now or hand this/these opportunities to other singers. It is possible to bow out gracefully. She did it all, made her bank. There is a place for her to perform now if she must, but not without singing . If you do this at the beginning you"d not deserve a career. Think Ashley Simpson or Milli Vanilla. Cher is still singing. Bonnie Tyler's career began when she had vocal tragedy. I doubt Kate Smith or Aretha mimed. Certainly Patti Labelle never has. Thanks Phil for your awesome vids. Iam blown away that you revealed Celines team combines portions of different singing recordings to mimic live variety for her. She has a skill to mime so many mashups Truly superior skill as an An arist to mime accurately such variety within a non-singing concert!

She goes through flare ups with her illness. It’s not that she can never ever sing, it’s that her voice is incredibly unreliable and can give out altogether sometimes. It absolutely depends on how she is doing, not just that day, but that moment. Also, there is a big difference between singing a bit and carrying a whole concert. Even in her documentary, we got to see her sing beautifully at points and her voice go out of control or give out completely at others. It’s probably that uncertainty that has led her down this path of not singing live because things can go completely wrong so quickly for her. It’s such an awful thing. I just wish her the best. 😔

I feel bad for older performers. I can’t remember what song it is, that refers to audiences just wanting the same music they know, but that applies here (I’m thinking Valdy’s Rock and Roll Song, but there is another). They may have made a lot of money (or not, maybe a bad contract), and maybe squandered it, or maybe got embezzled by accountants or managers. But lots just made ordinary amounts of money, then thought they would be able to basically retire with royalties and residuals. Then along come streaming services playing their old catalogue for pennies per play, their income dries up, and they are back touring. Audiences are fickle, they don’t want to hear the matured voice, they want to hear what the y missed from back in the day. So they try to give the audience what they want - their modern presence with their original voice, and now they are called liars and cheats. No excuses for younger, current performers. But how do older performers who are forced back into touring navigate all of these expectations?
@52blackshadow14 күн бұрын
I just wish artists would sing the song. If they don't feel they can do it, or feel embarrassed about doing so, then just don't do it. I fully realize that some of my favorite singers, such as John Fogerty, are unlikely to sound the same today as they did in 1969. Regardless, it is still John Fogerty and I will love him all the same. 🙂

One important thing when having one recording with two voices and another recording with one voice - but from same old time - is it's possible to subtract the two. This means for the recording with two voices, it's possible to better recover the second voice. This means when theire is a loud playback voice mixed with a weak singing voice captured by the microphone, that playback voice can to a big part be eliminated by use of the available stand-alone recording.

Did he sound like he did in his 20s? Not even close. But, he was still singing his unique songs as only he could. I love those older age performances. Very poignant. Of course, no pitch correction, no miming. Even his fingerstyle got a little sloppier but it didn’t matter - it was still Handsome Johnny.

In recent years I heard Ian Tyson live in a little music hall in Calgary. His voice was weak and raspy, deteriorated from his original voice. If he released an album, or sang at the Olympics it would only be nostalgic. ‘That’ voice is gone. On the other hand, he was engaging and charming with great stories, sincerity and humor. If he’d have lip-synced, I know I would have walked out.

I'm in awe that she could stand and walk unaided, but humans have an enormous capacity to deceive ourselves. Example: ask a person with memory issues what they look like- they'll almost always see/describe themselves as they USED to look, rather than their current appearance. Couple that with a team who want to protect her desperately out of love (and some financial) and she might very well believe herself that it is all her.
