Maurice was really the George Harrison of the Bee Gees. he said that he kind of felt unworthy of the success and fame he had. But really, Barry and Robin might have been the bricks, but he was the mortar. He had a naturally low voice, but he could hit really high notes, too. He would weave his harmony in wherever it was needed, on the very top, the bottom, or in between. He was the mortar on a personal level, too. Barry and Robin had a complicated relationship, and Maurice had to be the go-between many times. It's not coincidence that Barry and Robin never recorded together again after Mo died.

Robin was sent home to monitor his abdominal pain but called back to the hospital for immediate surgery. His surgeries had complications plus his overly strict vegan diet (not wise for anyone with a gastrointestinal abnormality) meant when the cancer was found meant Robin was malnourished and as a result couldn't tolerate the rigors of heavy chemo needed for his cancer and his liver and kidneys shut down. Their shared condition since birth (an extra loop of bowel that could twist at any time) did have some connection in that sense. I saw an interview with Barry talking about his “falsetto”. He said he was asked to do it but could never understand why he was asked. According to him it should’ve been Robin because his voice was much higher than Barry’s. You can tell that by how hard Barry has to work to do it. When Robin sings very high it’s effortless. When Maurice sings with them it really adds to the sound. You can really tell he’s missing when it’s just Robin & Barry singing. Not to mention Maurice is the humorous one. Love that!

Thank you for critiquing sweet Maurice. He had a wonderfully expressive voice and he was a musical genius playing so many instruments by ear. He was totally amazing on his bass guitar and the keyboard. He said he wanted to play bass because his idol Paul McCartney played it. He had an awesome vocal range and could sing high and low notes. And I adored his sexy speaking voice. Mo was the group's peacekeeper as he said he was just like his mom was peacekeeper between their dad and he and his brothers. He was also musical arranger for the band. Barry has said so many times that Mo was absolutely the best arranger he had ever seen and that he was irreplaceable to the band. As Barry said Mo always knows just where to put that third harmony. As far as Barry was concerned the Bee Gees officially ended with Mo's untimely and shocking death. Barry was totally crushed and could not go on pretending to be the Bee Gees. Andy's death at such a young age devastated Barry and then Mo's sudden passing just about finished him off. As far as Barry was concerned the day Mo died is the day the Bee Gees died. 😢😢😢

I still would love you to tackle the complexity of Fanny be Tender. I’ve listened to it thousands of times and I can’t begin to discern who is what line when. They blend so beautifully together in so many ways. Maybe the pitch monitoring software will show the differences in tonality and vibrato. This was fantastic❤

Agree! I'd love to see pitch monitoring on all of their voices at the same time, like stacked. If each voice can be in a different color on the pitch software, at the same time, that would be incredible!

Oh yes, that song is one of their very best, is astonishing that immediate switch on their voices, all three sing falsetto, all three sing natural, that song is legendary and perfect.

The BeeGees are individually and collectively such remarkable vocalists. I always thought their sound was a single set of vocal chords, shredded, to blend together so absolutely perfectly. Have loved them from the "Massachusetts" days. Thanks once again, FIL, for brilliant discussion and observation.

Thanks for a wonderful analysis of Maurice Gibb's vocals. I appreciated how you thoroughly explained and demonstrated how his vocal abilities were an integral part of the Bee Gees' unique vocal abilities. I also loved how you explained how Maurice's mid-baritone range blended expertly with Robin's tenor and Barry's counter-tenor ranges that covered a wide vocal range. Thanks for providing expert analyses on all four Gibb brothers--Barry, Robin, Maurice and Andy. I truly appreciate what you do, Fil!

Mo truly was the Man in the Middle. Barry and Robin have often said that he was the peacemaker out of three. His range is vast as he was very capable of singing falsetto as well (i.e. Fanny Be Tender). To me his chest voice is similar to Ringo Starr’s.
@micheladonofrio22852 жыл бұрын
Fil, if you take a look at Nights on Broadway (I think from Live by Request) and the video for Fanny be tender, it is Maurice doing falsetto in Nights and Robin at some point in Fanny, so they all could do it.

Mo was the unsung hero of these lovely brothers…he could lay down a harmony anywhere! His musicality I believe anchored the group…his solo voice is amazing! His daughter Sam is a good singer as well…his drum sets and his persona were unique. He had a bit more “ cool” than his brothers..I love them because I have a disease that affects my hearing. Lol thinking I would be deaf I decided to relive my musical repetior in the 80’s. Funnily enough I began realizing I would gravitate to their music. Then I realized it was the higher voices and musical Melodie’s..always pretty…actually now cure my attacks! I’m Staying Alive the best way!

I think of Maurice as the voice that grounded the brighter and more propulsive voices of Robin and Barry. The timbre of Barry and Robin could pierce a wall. I think of Maurice pouring a bit of honey over their sound. So interesting.

Im very happy that I had a chance to see the Bee Gees on the One 4 All Tour back in 1989 in Germany and it was brilliant.When they shared the mike for their medley,you could clearly hear and see [I had a very good place only a few meters away from stage] how they shared their harmony and so on🔝Later 20 years later or so,I had a chance to see Robin Gibb on a Solo Tour,I think 1 or 2 years before he died[Gone Too Soon Mo,Rob,Andy😔] and he was brilliant,but I missed Barry and Maurice🙏Robin had a great band and back up singers,but it wasn't the same.When he played the Bee Gees Songs like Tragedy or other classics,it sounded empty and I felt really bad about it,because you could clearly see that he would not have a long time to live,and it was like,it is over.Heartbreaking ~However》Once again a great video》Thanks God that we have all of the music,cause this time will not comeback again,it is the same with David Bowie☆Some People came into this world and gave us a eternal gift of art and music,that was so one if the kind,that nobody ever can or will top it,which doesn't mean that music will ever stop,no that will never happen,and that is good,but to me it is all done~Anyway🙏

Thank you for this reaction Fil. Just for you to know, this concert in particular had a very big sound problem, it was not the backing track. That was in fact the very last concert, but 'Live by Request' recorded few months before, was released as the final one because of that reason. That problem made the boys sound bad during the whole performance, anyway they were perfect as always, that perfect that they never interrupted the concert or complained about anything, IMHO they should've. Even in the end Maurice made Barry turn around and say goodbye to the audience, because he left the stage immediately, he was so embarrassed. PS Another song that showcases much better Maurice's voice is 'Wildflower' I guess I already sent you the link for future reactions.

@@juanita6479 Was this clip taken from their Wango-Tango concert?🤔 I remember watching a bit of it a few years ago, and yes, the sound engineer should've been Fired!!😣
@juanita64792 жыл бұрын
@@gloriamaryhaywood2217 Yep, exactly that one, and not only fired, I think the boys should have postponed the presentation due to the poor sound conditions, they had every right to decide. There are at least five videos of that concert on YT and they all sound terrible, who were target of bad critics? The boys of course. Take a look at 'You should be dancing' it's always the closing song, and at the end you can see how Barry left very quickly, he felt ashamed, and Mo, as always the peacemaker, convinces him to say goodbye to the audience.

@@juanita6479 I will take a look. Yep, Barry was a perfectionist and on top of everything! And I'm sure that bad sound irked him to No End!! OOF! I Hate that that happened, but they should have just Stopped the dang show, apologised to the audience and told them that their ticket money will be refunded pronto! AND informed them that they would let them know when the show was rescheduled! I saw one clip where the brothers are desperately pointing to their ear-buds showing the sound engineer that something was Desperately Wrong!😳 I think mostly Robin was doing this if I'm remembering correctly? It's been a few years since I last viewed that video clip! I am still Amazed that Barry didn't just Shut that concert Down!? I guess maybe he was Hoping the frigging sound engineer would very soon Fix the damn Problem?? 🤔
