Hi Fil! There aren’t enough words to say about Julie’s voice....when you hear her start a song you find yourself mesmerized! She has that something special that only she has...you just sit....knowing you are witnessing greatness! A true lady...a true magical talent! Just can’t say enough good things about her! Thanks for showcasing her again! Simply wow! ✌️ So many songs....such beautiful sounds...I still find myself wanting to hear more Mary Poppins! I see her coming down with the umbrella bringing music only she can do! Dick Van Dyke just added even more gorgeous music too....the mid sixties had Julie on top! Petula Clark also had my heart..my hubby, and I had a first date with the song Downtown playing...I reached over to hold his arm...55 yrs later and still holding his hand! ❤️

Slight correction: She didn't "co-star" in Thoroughly Modern Millie. She was THE star. The movie was conceived as a showcase for her talents. As a matter of fact, Universal studios was on the brink of financial ruin at the time. That movie alone made them so much money, they were saved from disaster. There were some wonderful, other actors in "TMM" (Mary Tyler Moore, Carol Channing, Beatrice Lillie, just to name a few) but they were all in supporting roles. "Millie" was a 100% Julie film. Point of interest: This was the last musical she made (until Victor/Victoria) that was a success. Star, Darling Lili (1968 & 1970) were huge flops, and she had kind of a lull through the mid-70s until she appeared as a supporting role in "10." That marked a resurgence in her career and was followed by a string of hits. Another tidbit: In 1969, she and Blake Edwards (husband, director-producer) were signed to make a movie version of She Loves Me. However, they were dealt a huge blow when the studio scrapped the film due to waning popularity of movie musicals and of Julie herself. But clearly she recovered!

When you hear Julie in her prime it's so very different, so special, so unique. When you posess each component in massive amounts - gift/talent / work ethic - technique and control charisma / personality / performance technique - this is what you end up with - one of the greatest singers / artist / performers of the last century and a bit. Even great singers sometimes lack one of these but compensate with other atrributes but Julie has the lot ...and it shows !

A hat tip to Andre Previn, the conductor. I sang in a professional chorus that the LA Phil hired when they needed singers, and had several performances with him when he was their director. Very pleasant and low-key but in charge at the same time. I never had the pleasure of being on stage with Ms Andrews. She never fails to astound me with her accuracy, seeming ease, and range.

Julie was the lead of the two biggest movies of both 1964 and 1965. Prior to this and after she appeared on variety shows of the 1960's. She not only sang but also danced with legendary actors known also for dancing. Julie held her own with these legends. Quite a multi talented lady. In 1972, when The Sound of Music was re-released to theaters, my mother had to nag me into seeing the movie. It was the only time her nagging paid off, for me anyway.

I grew up in NYC and my family were HUGE Broadway goers. I grew up listening to all Julie Andrews' albums. My favorite song when I was a small child was "How Are Things in Glocamorra?" and my favorite Julie Andrews movie is NOT Sound of Music nor Mary Poppins, but Thoroughy Modern Millie. My parents were such Julie fans that we all went, as a family to the first run movie in Times Square and then, as was the norm in my house, over to a records store to get the soundtrack. I still have that album. My kids grew up watching Thoroughly Modern Millie and Sound of Music and became HUGE fans of each (more than Mary Poppins). I loved Victor/Victoria. She is amazing. I also remember that she was criticized, quite a bit, as was the entire cast and director and flm Torn Curtain. Some people were outraged that Julie had cast off her "good girl" persona and pummeled Paul Newman and Alfred Hitchcock. There have been some revisionist history to that whole thing but at the time, it WAS a thing. I'd love to hear some analysis on TMM songs, especially "Jimmy" sung by Julie or the dance number performed by Julie and Mary Tyler Moore in the elevator. Thank you for your wonderful analysis, Phil. Always great to see your stuff...sorry my comment is so late.

Back in 1986 Operation California (an L.A. based relief organization) put on a charity concert on behalf of those left homeless by an earthquake in Mexico. Titled “Placido (Domingo) and Friends” it included Placido Domingo, Frank Sinatra, John Denver, El Ballet Folklorico de Mexico, and the spectacular Julie Andrews! What a night! What a vision! A beautiful, regal, angel of God whose voice was more prominent in person than on any television or movie theater screen. Video did not give her the justice, preeminence, nor majesty that her presence afforded. Her voice was incomparable. And I say this as she individually, and as part of an ensemble of singers that included Sinatra and Domingo, stood out amongst them. Truly a night too remember.

Thank you for featuring Julia Andrews and her incredible as well as stunningly beautiful voice. She was my favorite since childhood. My parents had the album of the broadway version of My Fair Lady. Since you are doing singers these days, I would love to hear an analysis of Ethel Merman. I suspect that her pitch was pretty spot on too.

Same! 28 years ago, I had a reasonably decent voice ( *nowhere* close to Ms Andrews, but you wouldn't run out of the room with your hands over your ears 😉) but now? My voice is complete trash. In complete contrast, with Ms Andrews, although you can hear a difference between her younger voice and this performance - her skill, and range and the beauty is all still there.

Any information on why she won’t risk surgery to remove her nodules? She hasn’t been able to sing for years anyway...... (where do you get your encyclopedic knowledge?) IMPRESSIVE❣️‼️
@BOOMNERD514 жыл бұрын
What an incredible long career. It's certainly a shame that the muscle striation was not a nodule, so who knows what damage was done in surgery? Very strong and buoyant personality to continue performing successfuly!
@sarahm.53562 жыл бұрын
I read an article about the suit she brought against the surgeon. It said that he actually removed part of the vocal cord on the unaffected side of her throat. The healthy side.
@dontip2222 жыл бұрын
@@msfrankie631 I think you misunderstood. Julie never had nodules, she had a "striation" that doctors now say might have been resolved with some vocal rest. The surgeon cut a chunk of Julie's vocal folds by mistake, and that is the reason she hasn't sung (at least as she did) since the late 90s.

My husband worked for Julie's husband Blake Edwards when he was making the Pink Panther films. You couldn't have met a lovelier person. If my husband had to take her & Blake to dinner they would invite me. Also Andre Previn stayed in their house in Chester Square when he was married to Mia Farrow. I have a drawer full of Xmas cards from her personally. She will be 87 on Oct 1st. It was awful when she had an operation on her throat. She never moaned even though it messed up her voice. Thanks again for doing this, . I learn a great deal from what you are doing, despite my total lack of musical education. I do want to point out that Dame Andrews originated a starring roll in in every musical that she was cast in . The Boy Friend ( 485 performances), My Fair Lady ( 2717 performances), Camelot (873 performances, and Victor Victoria 738 performances. Obviously Andrews was not in all of these performances, but she was never in a flop or in a lackluster vehicle. In three of the four (excepting The Boyfriend), she was nominated for a Tony (she declined the nomination for Victor Victoria) but she never won a Tony. She has won 3 grammys + 2 nominations, 1 Oscar + 2 nominations, 6 Golden globes + 8 nominations, and 2 Emmys + 7 nominations. Hopefully there is a life time achievement Tony with her name on it soon.
